May 2 Robert Agar and other officers of the Seven Brothers, Hope. Certificate that the fish on board stank, and was unfit to eat, and that there is a want of almost all other necessaries; with note by Edw. Bellamy, that he gave a warrant to Mr. Lucas for 80 lbs. of beef on 11 April, and if it was kept until the 19th without being looked to, it would stink, but the fish was good; also certificate of Robt. Manley and Thos. Wilson, that they surveyed the fish, and found them of full size, and fit for sea victualling. 11
" " Capt. Fras. Willoughby, Portsmouth. [Adm. Comrs.] The Generals took the 100 men on board from the Old Warwick and Bryar, and the ships are now tallowing. Sends a list of ships that sailed with the Generals, who were pretty well manned, but cannot give an account of their victualling, as the victuallers say their masters have ordered them to give no accounts to anyone. Asks an order as to purchasing for the use of the navy the ladings of two Swedish ships sent in, and directions to the navy treasurer to give his instrument here orders to pay bills exceeding 5l., so as to prevent the holders coming to London. The Lily has arrived with 90 men, who will be sent in the Advice to the fleet with two fire-ships, and the Mermaid, Portsmouth, and Falmouth sail to-morrow. 12

May 3 Capt. Limbery, Deal Adm. Com. Went on board the Generals at Dover with Major Bourne to see as to the victualling, but the Dutch fleet of 70 sail being 7 or 8 leagues off the Texel, it was resolved by a Council of War to steer towards them, and they accordingly set sail, so that little could be effected. 22
" 4 John Morris, Gravesend. Navy Comrs Has been on board several of the ships in the Hope, but they are poorly manned, except the Dolphin which has 41 out of 56, and the Unicorn her full number of 300, but 30 are at London. 23
" " Wm. Brandley, Essex Frigate. " Recommends Jeremy Country as lieutenant of the Essex, the person who has received a warrant being neglectful and inexperienced. 24
" " Capt. John Baskett, Cowes Castle. Gens. Deane and Monck. Has pressed all of Capt. Skinner's men, but as he is ordered to bring his prize to London, lent him four, and desires if they be pressed that order may be given for their release. 25
" 5 Robt. Stapylton Major Salwey. Recommends Thurston Read as steward or clerk of the check in a frigate just launched, as his father died in the service. 26
" " Generals Rich. Deane and Geo. Monck, Resolution. Capt. Peter Strong, Unicorn. To convoy the ships now with him and the victualling ships bound to the fleet, as far as the Humber, and if he meets the northern guard with 250 barrels of powder from Scarborough, to take it on board. 27

Has directed the victuallers to provide four months' victuals for 160 men for the former, and six months' for 30 men for the latter. " " Robt. Blackborne, Whitehall. " A ketch being wanted for special service, asks whether the two ketches ordered to be taken up are ready to sail, or if the one lately sent over to Holland may be contracted for. 33
" " Thos. Greene, Dover Adm. Com. The Golden Cock has sailed to the Downs, and the John Baptist to the fleet. Asks orders as to fitting out the Wildman fire-ship and victualling the two former. 34
" " Major William Burton, Yarmouth. Navy Comrs Is hastening the victualling ship, but the beer had to be brewed; is dependent upon the agent. Received their letter to appoint a steward according to instructions, but these were not enclosed. A vessel of 300 tons can be hired; asks what they allow a month. Has brought the hemp at 44s. 6d. per cwt. and given a bill on the treasurer for 400l. Asks a warrant to receive the men from the prize; there are no others to be had, all have been sent away by press or as volunteers. Private men ask 50l. a month, and men will not let their ships for a short time. 35
May 5 Major William Burton, Yarmouth. A dm. Com. Sent the packet to the Generals on the coast of Holland. Will direct Capt. Wilkinson to ship the 20 barrels of powder at Harwich for Yarmouth. Sends an information just brought by John Andrews from the fleet. Capt. Dan. Morgan of the John and Katherine is waiting in the road for orders. 36

Navy Comrs Has delivered, as ordered by the Generals, some money at Scilly, and Sir Hardress Waller's goods at Dublin; the Nightingale brought his children; is now ordered by the Commissioners here to Capt. Sparling in the old President at Kinsale, and to lie between there and Cork. 48

Mould subsequently turned his men out of one of them, plundered her, and then towed her away for Lynn, turning off his men at Filey. Hopes he shall not be wronged of his rights. Has delivered the other prize to Mr. Bower of Burlington, as also an inventory. 49

" " Capt. Robt. Wilkinson, Yarmouth. Adm. Com. Has come in with two vessels with ammunition, one with beef and pork, and two with fish for the fleet, and will sail with the first wind for the Thames. Has but 12 days' victuals, and the ship is very foul. 55
" 9 Edm. Harvey and Dan. Taylor, Customs' officers, London. Navy Comrs Gave order for the despatch of their business, but Mr. Lenthall refuses to pass the letter for the excise; and as an obstruction must of necessity ensue, they must take some speedy course for removing it. 56

The Bryar and Warwick should go to Falmouth to take in 200 more. Mr. Mill has pressed them thereabouts and wants more money. 66
May 10 Capt. Hen. Hatsell, Plymouth. Robt. Blackborne Expected the Bryar and Warwick to ship 200 men near Falmouth, and knows not how to send them. There is no other ship in port bound eastward, except a private man-of-war and her prize, and four from the Canaries. 67

" Has had a conference with Mr. and Mrs. Strelley; asks his assistance; she is worth 700l., but it must be done by consent of her father; and if necessary, has yet power to quench all such fires. Also desires he will look over his Plymouth accounts, as he only remembers receiving 5l. from Mr. Strelley and not 15l. 68

" " Major William Burton, Yarmouth. Navy Comrs Will observe their orders as to the rigging for the frigates. The Spanish iron is not sold yet, and will have the nay say of it. One of the victuallers has sailed with provisions, and the second will be ready shortly. 73

Wildey into the Lee Road, to get men and despatch ships; heard there were 200 colliers in the Swinn, and wrote to Commissioner Pett to send to Shoeburyness, to prevent the men going on shore. If five men were taken out of each, there would be enough for the fleet. There are also some Hull ships who are well provided, and could spare a few. 74

His father gave 800l. for it, and left it to his widow for life with remainder to him, but as his [step]-mother owes him 240l., she will neither surrender nor let the house, fearing he will secure the rent. 82

" The beer for the victuallers is not yet ready, but they contract at such a low rate that the brewers cannot live by it, although there is no other place can brew or bake so much in a week. Has freighted a ship to carry water to the fleet, but will forbear taking up any more until further order. The victuallers' men want protection from press. 83

Morgan's ship to-night, but there are 20 barrels at Harwich not yet arrived. Delivered the press warrant to Major Burton, and he and the bailiffs will do their best to get men. The collier fleet went by nearly a week since, but none of their men came on shore. 91

Navy Comrs Appointed several ships to be paid up to the last of Dec., but a few days after, the captains gave tickets to their men for the rest of their wages, which have since been signed and paid. Desires they will prevent this for the future, as it will prejudice the service, particularly where men should be turned from one ship to another. 96

May 14 Adm. Com. Navy Comrs Desire they will hasten the two victualling ships to the fleet, their masters not being on board they could not go with Capt. Strong. They are to go under convoy of the Sparrow or the Swan and Tenth Whelp, and to join him at the Humber or Newcastle. Also to hasten the captains of the merchant ships on board, and summon two of them to appear before the Committee for neglect of duty. With list of 19 ships and their commanders, and note of which are gone to sea. 107, 108
