" Theop. Bradstreet " To be purser of the Great President. Has served 9 years as purser and steward, 3 in the Phœnix and 6 in the Speaker, and was in all the Dutch engagements, but another has been made purser of the Speaker. 11
" Ellen, widow of Jonathan Brewer. " For continuance of the pension granted to her husband, who lost both legs in the Andrew, under Major Bourne, having nothing for herself and children. With recommendation of 13 parishioners. 12
" Rich. Brewer, mariner, Ratcliffe. " For allowance till recovered of a wound in the thigh got in fight with the Hollanders; was put out from Bartholomew's Hospital before he was perfectly cured, and went to the West Indies, but his wound broke out again. Is now at the Lock in Southwark, with 2d. a day, but 20s. is abated from his 4l. a year. 13
" Thos. Brown, boatswain, Adviser. " For a boatswain's place and compensation for his losses of 16l., when his frigate was unhappily surprised. Was faithful in engagements with the Hollanders, in the Straits and on the English coast. With certificate by Thos. Sankey. 14,15
" Fras. Chaplin and 15 other traders for butter and cheese in London. Adm. Com. For restoration without salvage of the Susan of Walderswick, surprised by a French shallop, and rescued by the Adviser pink, whose captain gave her up to the Commissioners for Prize Goods. Have lost 3,000l. by piracy and shipwreck last year, in transporting goods for the city and navy. 16

" Dinah, wife of Bernard Haddlesey. " For an order to receive some of the wages of her husband, who went to the West Indies as quartermaster of the Bear, and then midshipman in the Laurel. Will else be arrested, and lose her goods for rent. 27
" Phil. Hancock " For employment. Has served 8 years, viz., in the Swallow; in the Providence when the fleet revolted to Prince Rupert; in the Leopard in the Straits; in the Smyrna factor; in the Richard and Martha, and in a merchantman. 28
" Mary Harbottle, widow. " To accept Mr. Benge and Bartle as securities in 20l. each for release of her son Luke, prisoner in the Gatehouse, for wrong to John Hastings. Is extremely poor, and her son the only stay of her old age. 29
" John Harris and 9 others of the Wakefield, Reserve, Grantham, and Norwich. Gen. Penn For payment of their tickets for which they have waited 3 months, Mr. Hutchinson, Navy Treasurer, saying he wants money, so that they have spent more than their tickets come to, cannot go to sea, and are ruined. 30
" Leonard Harris, late commander of the Middleburg. Adm. Com. For restoration to his place, being dismissed for drunkenness, of which he is innocent, but is thick of hearing and slow of speech. 31
" Rich. Harris, late steward of the Mermaid. " To be purser of the ship, giving security to pass his accounts, having served on it 4 years as steward, and served at sea 9 years. With certificate of Capt. Ric. Stayner and 3 others. 32, 33

" Elizabeth, widow of Hum. Hill of the Swiftsure (?) Gens. Blake and Penn. For an order for 5 months' wages due to her husband, who fell ill on the ship, was carried ashore, and died last March, leaving her in sad condition. 37
" John Hills " For a gunner's place; served many years at sea, and last as master gunner of the Red Heart pink, but has been ill since his return. 38
" Wm. Hill, cook in the Old Warwick. " For renewal of his warrant, or removal into one of the new frigates. With order by Gen. Blake for his appointment to the Old Warwick, 27 June 1651, and certificate by John Day and 9 others of his good conduct. 39–41
" Geo. Hodges, gunner of the Preston. " For command of one of the fireships now fitting. Was in the wars against the Hollanders and in the Straits. 42
" Chas. Hodsall, prisoner in the Gatehouse. " For release to recover his health and earn a livelihood for his family. Has been gunner, and faithful in the fights with the Dutch, but has been justly committed for neglect of duty. 43
" Wm. Hollaway, minister of the Sampson. " For an allowance according to the 190 men the ship was victualled for, the Navy Commissioners only allowing him for 50. Was at great expense and hazard in the West Indian voyage, and did duty in several ships. 44
" Elizabeth, widow of John Howard of Stepney, of the Happy Entrance. Adm. Com. For payment of her husband's wages; he served by land and sea, was in all the engagements with the Dutch, and in 1654 served 7 months on the Happy Entrance, but staying 2 days on shore beyond his time, was ducked, turned ashore, fell ill, and died, and being pricked as a runaway, she cannot get his wages, and has 3 children. With certificate by Edw. Alibar and Hen. Gleed, churchwardens, and 6 others of Stepney. 45, 46
" Ebenezer Hughes, shipwright, of Redrith. " To be master carpenter of the frigate building in the Forest of Dean. Has served 5 years, and lately on the Satisfaction, under Capt. Mich. Nutton; but when the ship was repairing, another informed against him, and got his place. Will so walk that there may be no report against him. 47
" John Hughes " For a place in the outstores at Deptford, vacant by a late miscarriage. Was storekeeper's assistant there till Mr. Davies' brother was put in. Was purser in all the late engagements, but has attended many months for employ. Is recommended by Col. Jones, one of themselves. 48
" Thos. Jefferies " For a cook's place. Has been 28 years at sea. Was in 2 engagements against the Dutch, and was under Capt. Badiley, Vice-Admiral of the fleet to the south. 49
" Simon Jones " To be lieutenant to the Convertine. Trading to the Barbadoes, his ship, the Catherine, was seized by the fleet for the American expedition, to his loss of 1,000l. Served well and returned by order to England. 50
" Wm. Lockwood, of the Falcon. Navy Comrs Not to allow his wages to be detained, because, being employed on the coast of Sweden to carry beer for ships in the Sound, the boats applied for it so fast that he had not time to take receipts from all. Will swear that none has been embezzled. 51
" Tobias Lone, late master of the Gillyflower. Adm. Com. To be master of the Indian. Served in the engagements against the Dutch, and was 4½ years in the Gilliflower, but she is laid up. 52
" Edw. Mathews " To be gunner on the Dunbar. Has served by sea and land 13 years, and was gunner in Scotland, and gunner's mate in the Convertine under Capts. Lambert and Ant. Joyne. 53
" Thos. Myhill " For his wages as midshipman in the Portsmouth in the expedition to the West Indies, whence he returned ill, and is not yet recovered; was midshipman before in the Pelican, Sovereign, and Swiftsure, and so certified by Gen. Penn, but is likely to suffer by an error of the clerk of the check. 54
" Tobias Mihill " To command one of the small vessels building, or to be lieutenant on a larger ship. Has served 16 years as mate and midshipman, and was in the Great Charity in the late expedition to the West Indies. 55
John Morgan, late lieutenant of the Dover. " For employment; served as gunner on the Assurance and Laurel in the fights against the Dutch, and at Jamaica as lieutenant of the Dover, which is now in harbour. 56
" Thos. Morley Adm. Com. For payment of 640l. 8s. 0d., balance due of 1,080l. 8s. 0d. for hire of the Jonathan and Abigail, employed as victualler to the State's fleet in the Straits. Has another bill due, and his men are clamorous. 57
" Ellis Morris, prisoner in the White Lion, Southwark. Col. Clarke. For release on bail, being taken 2 months ago on a false accusation of purloining some of the State's goods, which he can disprove. 58
" Ezekiel Pakeman " To be purser of the Resolution, having given security in 600l. for his fidelity, and testimonies of Vice-Admiral Lawson and others, but his warrant is obstructed on a false information of negligence. 59
" John Rachel Adm. Com. To be cook of the Gift, now at Chatham. Has served many years, and hazarded life and limb. 60
" Geo. Ramsey, mariner. Gen. Blake and the other Generals. To be master of a ship. Has served in several ships, and is now chief mate of the Katherine, under Capt. Willoughby Hannam. 61
" Edw. Rand, Newcastle-on-Tyne. The Protector. For restoration of 4 guns taken from him, on report of Col. Barkstead on his former petition. 62
" Chris. Randall Adm. Com. For release from impress as a common seaman, having been master carpenter of the Roebuck 11 years, and 2 years in service against the Dutch. 63
" Robert Reeve " For the place of carpenter, having served 12 years, and been in the engagements with the Dutch. With order by Major N. Bourne to the clerk of the check of the Adviser pink, to enter him as master carpenter, 16 March 1653–4. 64, 65
" John Richards " To be steward on the Old President. Has so served 5 years, and was in all the fights against the Dutch, and last as steward of the Mayflower, but is now out of employment, and has a wife and 5 children. 66
" Geo. Riley " To be lieutenant of the Assurance. Was under Col. Mackworth through the wars till that regiment was reduced, and lieutenant in all the engagements with the Dutch. 67
" Capt. Ant. Rively of the Vulture. " For consideration; served through the Dutch wars and ever since, and has been wounded in the Vulture, and just come from Yarmouth. 68
" Thos. Roach and Nat. Humphries. " To supply the navy with copper ladles and tin bullet cases, at much lower rates than now given to Mr. Ward, they being makers. With list of the offered and the present prices. Noted, nothing to be done at present. 69, 70
" Peter Robartes, minister of the Centurion. " For an imprest, as allowed to others in like case. Has waited 12 months for restoration to his employment. 71
" " " " To be chaplain in the Lyme under Gen. Blake, at his request; served during the Dutch war, and was with Blake in the Straits. 72
" Roger Roberts, gunner of the Falmouth. Adm. Com. For release on security, that he may pass his accounts in the Ordnance office. Has served 7 years, but is in custody with the serjeant-at-arms for embezzling powder, and for menacing his captain, who has forgiven him. 73
" Geo. Robins " For a small office under the Comptroller of the Prize Office for goods landed out of prize ships, which he has served as deputy. Had a letter from Col. Cock. 74
" Rob. Robinson, captain of the Plover. " For removal into the Providence, that he may go out with the fleet, his ship being under repair. Has a certificate from the commander-in-chief in Scotland. 75

" Faith, widow of Roger Robinson, boatswain of the Laurel. " For the pay of her husband, who served many years, and was cast away in the ship. Has 4 children. 77

" Mich. Rosewell Adm. Com. To be continued purser of the Taunton, of which he was steward. Was so appointed, but whilst making up his accounts as steward, another was put in his place. Lost all he had for his affection to Parliament. 79
" Geo. Rudack, Hull " For command in the State's fleet. Was master and part owner of the Unity of Hull in the northern trade, but she perished in a storm coming from North Bergen, and he lost 400l. With certificate by Rob. Acklam and 4 others, and letter from Rich. Cudworth to Rob. Blackborne in his favour. 80–83
" Geo. Rudack, master of the Weymouth. " For speedy command of the Martin galley or Cygnet; served through the wars, and has been 2 years master of the Weymouth, looking forward to preferment. 84
" Thos. Russell Col. John Clarke. For employment. Was recommended by Comr. Willoughby, who is now gone to Portsmouth 85

" Wm. Thew, steward of the Gift. " For continuance in his place, in which he has served faithfully 7 years. With letter promising 100l. security for the passing of his accounts, and certificate by Jas. Clerke and 10 others in his favour. 94–6
" Capt. Edm. Thompson, late of the Advantage. " For employment, or a certificate to preserve him from scandal. Left his own affairs when called to command the Advantage against the Hollanders, but now it is laid up by order from the General. 97

" Capt. Thos. Thompson, of the Crow. " For payment of his wages, which are stopped. Was to go as a victualler with Gen. Penn's expedition, but was stayed a month by winds in the Hope, Lee Road, &c.; the fleet sailed without him, and on his return the ship was discharged. Noted, "No allowance, for notorious negligence." 99
" Thos. Thompson, oarmaker. Navy Comrs For payment of 84l. 12s. due, or imprest for 100l. in part of 200l. more, worth of goods supplied at Chatham. Has many workmen, and cannot get money to pay for wages and timber. 100
" Rich. Thoresby, of the Elizabeth, prisoner in the Gatehouse. Adm. Com. For release and restoration to his ship, being committed on information of malicious spirits. Noted, "Nothing can be done in it." 101

Penn in the late expedition to the West Indies, having a power of attorney from the late Thos. Lawes, of New Sarum, co. Wilts, vintner, his father, and executor, to receive the amount. With the Admiralty Commissioners' order for Lawes' appointment at a salary of 200l. a year and no fees, 7 July 1654. 106, 107
" Wm. Warr, late boatswain of the Langport. Adm. Com. To be boatswain of a yard, or have some other place on shore. Has served many years, and was so wounded in the Portland fight that he has scarce a hand or a leg to help himself. Was since in the Straits, but discharged by Gen. Blake, his wounds giving way. 108
" Joseph Waters, cook of the Harwich. " That he and others of the frigate, who have long groaned under the tyrannical usage of Capt. John Jeffery, and know his fraudulent dealings with the State, may be examined thereon. 109
" Nath. Weekes " To be master of the Indian, or some ship bound for the West Indies. Has served 5 years as master's mate and pilot, and last as master of the Mathias from Hispaniola. With certificate by Barth. Kitcher and 3 others. 110, 111

" Katherine, wife of Peter Wildboare. " For an order to the commander of the Seahorse merchant ship, in which her husband served 10 months, to pay her his wages, at his request, he having gone onto the Falmouth, under Capt. Mills, when the State's fleet was at Barbadoes. 117
" John Williams " For employment. Has served 3 years; hazarded his life in the last engagement with the Dutch, and is recommended by Rich. Cromwell, his Highness's son. 118

" Vice-Adm. of Devonshire. Constables of the several Hundreds. Order to issue warrants to the several petty constables within their Hundreds to warn all seamen within their respective parishes, from 15 to 60 years of age, to appear before him, so that such as are fit may be retained for the service, and to leave a note at the residence of each seaman to appear; also to require the petty constables to be present, and bring a list of all seamen residing within their parishes, and to make a return of this warrant. 125
" E. Hayward [Chatham]. [Navy Comrs.] The money ordered by them has been only a present supply and not an additional help to the chest, for it is still charged on account by the treasurer as an imprest, until the accounts are balanced; and, for fear he should overpay himself, he has of late been forced to trouble them for a warrant quarterly, to save himself harmless in case he overpaid. If there be no other ways to help the chest, believes the Commissioners for Sick and Wounded, who know its state, might spare some money. 126
" Edw. Mountfort Col. Clarke Begs employment; served from Feb. 1652–3 to Nov. 1654 as clerk of the check to the Recovery. Writes well; can speak Spanish; is poor and without friends, and can produce certificates of good conduct. 127

Parke, the commander, took divers barrels of salt, fishing nets, hawsers, bread, and other stores out of certain prizes, and converted them to his own use; also a butt of brandy wine, which the General gave for the encouragement of the men; he also caused the clerk of the check to make out a ticket for a runaway. The Prize Office Commissioners said they thought the devil was in that captain, to sell all and bring nothing but the bare hulls of the ships. 134
