Aug. 6. Petition of Nath. Brad, mariner, to the Protector. As John Southwood, merchant of London, has long troubled me with suits, never brought to trial, I appealed to you, and you referred me to Sir Thos. Pride, Sir Wm. Smith, and Ralph Gardner, to whom Southwood agreed to submit. They awarded him to pay me 336l. 19s. 4d., which he now refuses to do. I beg that as Southwood stands in contempt of your award, you would order me the money, that I may return to your service at sea. Noted as laid aside. [1 sheet. Vol. CLVI., No. 14a.]
1657 ? Nath. Hodges to "your lordship" [Rich. Cromwell as Lordchancellor of Oxford]. I beg your favour in a business of much concern to me, and no disadvantage to any, and it has a precedent. I have performed many exercises in the University by their command, and I hope with approval, and being now by their appointment to answer the Doctors at the Act, and resolved meantime to undergo all other exercises required for my degree, I beg to be admitted to my degree, as well as to the exercises. I do not want so much time as my juniors have obtained, and hitherto I have not entreated nor received any kindness from the University. [2/3 pages. Vol. CLVIII., No. 136.]
