wanted to marry one of his daughters to the King of Denmark,
which is not true, the Duke having refused a sister of the King of

120. Chamberlain to Carleton. Poverty of the Exchequer,
&c. The Prince Palatine and Lady Elizabeth are detained
by contrary winds. She is meanly attended as to ladies, having
only the Countess of Arundel and Lady Harrington. The King
and Queen accompanied them to Rochester; the Prince to Canterbury. The King refused a suit of the Prince Palatine for the
delivery of Lord Grey, and several other requests, which made the
Prince complain that he was treated as a child rather than as a son.
Lord Grey and Lady Arabella are kept more closely than before,
because he sent her love messages by one of her women. The
Countess of Shrewsbury more restrained, and on good cause. The
King, desiring to falsify the report that Rochester ruled him, and
Overbury, Rochester, determined to remove Overbury. Some foreign
embassy was pressed upon him, which he positively declined, saying
the King could not in law or justice compel him to leave his
country; for which contempt he was sent to the Tower. The King
declares this is no slight on Rochester, in whose conversation he
delights more than in any man's living. The Exchequer being at
a dead stand for want of money, Rochester gave them for the King
a chest of gold of 22,000l. Many peers refuse to concur in a request
for the dukedom of Richmond to be granted to the Duke of Lenox.
Lady Essex accused by a wise woman of a design to poison her
husband, wherefore her friends have dropped the idea of suing for a
divorce. Some of the nobility of Muscovy having offered to put
themselves under the King's protection, he is full of a scheme to
send an army there, and rule that country by a deputy, and is sanguine of success. Projects for carrying on the Persian trade by way
of the Caspian Sea, Volga, and Dwina, to Archangel, and thence to
England. The Queen, with a noble train, gone to Bath. At Lord
Knollys' house, en route, she was entertained with a masque, by the
Lord Chamberlain's four sons and others. |
