Reynell [Marshal of the King's Bench], on a suit for a fine for rioting, respited many years before, but for which his lands are now extended. Sir George refuses to obey the Lord Chief Justice's order to admit him to bail, and has spoken disrespectfully of the Queen, whose servant he is.

Petition of the inhabitants of Ely, and other towns in the Isle of Ely, to the Council, to direct the Commissioners of Sewers to forbear from levying lawful penalties for not opening the drain called Sutton Lode, by the appointed time, because 100,000 acres of land will be overflowed, if it be opened before the main drain, the West water, is completed, and its outfalls at Wisbeach, at present stopped by their command, are perfected.

July [18 ?] 24. Petition of Edw. Smith to the Same, for stay of their order to pull down certain buildings which he has erected in Drury Lane, till the old foundations can be measured, when it will be found that he has not infringed the Proclamation relative to buildings.
July [18 ?] 25. Request of Rich. Lecavill, Groom of the Chamber, for payment of his expenses, &c., whilst travelling about with the King's silkworms the past three months, whithersoever His Majesty went.

Report by Robt. le Gris, that being at Lady Drury's house when her husband was dying, Lady Markham urged Lady Drury to allow Mr. Jones to sit up with her husband; that he [Le Gris] objected to it, because Mr. Jones was a busy Catholic, and would unsettle the mind of Sir Drew, who had received the communion; that an angry altercation ensued thereon, in which he reminded Lady Markham of the villainy of the Powder Treason; that she said it was a pity it did not succeed, on which he replied that had she been a man, he had slain her on the spot, &c.

27. Examination of Winifred Lady Markham, wife of Sir Robt. Markham, co. Notts. Was at the house of Sir Drew Drury, then at the point of death, but did not urge that Mr. Jones should visit him; heard no mention of the Powder Treason, nor said she wished it had taken effect.
July 19. 28. Petition of Bridget Gray to the Council, that her grandson, John Throckmorton, prisoner in Newgate for felony, may be discharged, it being his first offence, and Sir Thos. Smythe being ready to convey him beyond seas. With order thereon, that on certificate by the Lord Mayor and Recorder, that John Throckmorton was not convicted for murder, burglary, highway robbery, rape, or witchcraft, a warrant be made for his banishment. Also certificate of the Mayor and Recorder that his crime was aiding in stealing a hat worth 6s., for which his accomplice, Robt. Whisson, an old thief, was hanged, July 21 and 22, 1618. Annexes,

July 20. 29. The King to the Officers of Customs at Newcastle-upon-Tyne, Sunderland, and Blyth. Objections having been raised to a patent granted to And. Boyd to survey coals and prevent their being deceitfully mingled, the case has been tried in the Star Chamber, the abuse proved, and offenders fined; orders them henceforth to restrain ships laden with coals, unless they can produce a certificate from the Surveyor, of the nature and quality of the coal, &c.

30. Justices of Essex to the Council. Refusal of Colchester to contribute towards the rate for payment of Sir Nic. Coote, the Provost Marshal, on pretence of their being a corporation, though the other corporations have all paid. Request that they may be ordered to show cause of refusal before their Lordships.
July 20. 31. Sir Hen. Yelverton, Attorney General, to the Chancellor of the Duchy of Lancaster. Sir Rich. Molyneux, Receiver General of the Duchy, having lent the King 1,000l., a warrant is to be drawn up for it to be deducted upon his next account. With note by Sir Edw. Moseley, Attorney of the Duchy, that this is a fit warrant.

Does not think he is a priest; he was not brought by Lady Markham, nor urged by her to see Sir Drew. Nothing was said of the Powder Plot. Does not think Lady Markham is a recusant, having heard her speak against Papists.

36. Examination of John Chard. Lady Markham did not urge Mr. Jones to go up to see Sir Drew Drury; did not say to her in reference to the Powder Plot, that Catholics condemn such attempts if they fail, and commend them if they prosper; never heard her say she wished it had succeeded, nor Mr. Grise [Le Gris] say she would have to answer for that speech.

Being suddenly ordered to break it off, they pray that the allowance may be continued till 1,700l. arrears are paid off, and that their store of hemp and tar, provided in advance, value 9,000l., may be bought from them.

39. John Packer to Sir Thos. Lake. The King has signed the papers and bills, except one that was not subscribed. The letters to the states of Zealand require the subscription inserting.
July 25. 40. Examination of Wm. Jones. Was at Sir Drew Drury's, a little before his death, with Lady Markham, but she never urged him or any other to persuade Sir Drew to change his religion, nor was there any talk of religion, or of the Powder Treason, nor did Capt. le Gris bid him remember her words; she and Capt. le Gris had an angry argument about divorces.
July 26. 41. Sir Geo. Bowles, Lord Mayor of London, to the Council. On the complaint of Thos. Powell and others, of Blackhorse Alley, has examined the buildings there of Chris. Allanson, and finds that they are on former sites, and, being larger and more airy, will greatly improve the alley, which is very close and crowded; has ordered him to pull down the part which encroaches twelve feet upon ground formerly void.
July 26. 42. Statement [by Sir John Coke] of the condition of the Royal Navy in the times of Edw. III., 37 Hen. VIII., 2 Edw. Has lost 2,500l., his whole property except his ship, on the voyage with Sir Walter Raleigh; his ship was seized at Kinsale, by the Lord Deputy of Ireland, and on his repairing to London, he was given in charge. Prays restoration of his ship, and release; not having been at St. Thomas's, he can give no information thereon.

Was unjustly charged with refusing to contribute his proportion towards repairing the sea bank, and was sent for to London, and committed to the custody of a messenger. Prays discharge, and that his answer may be taken in the country.
July. 64. Petition of Robt. Stammage to the Council. Is justly punished for his offence against the Commissioners of Sewers of Norfolk, although it was ignorantly committed. Prays release from further punishment, or at least leave of absence from the Fleet Prison for twenty-four days, that he may attend to his lawsuits, in Norfolk, which are coming to a trial.

July. 67. Petition of Ann Twist to the Same, for regular payment of a pension of 50l. per ann., granted her in consideration of having been for thirty years laundress to Queen Elizabeth, which is now a year and a half in arrears.

Statement of the inconveniences that will result from a recent Privy Seal Order, that all inquisitions relating to the King's revenue, as suppressed tenures, concealed lands, gathering in of debts, &c., be prosecuted by the officers in the several counties, and fourteen days' notice given before execution of process. The officers will be at heavy charges, and opportunity will be afforded for concealing goods. Proposal that the Privy Seal be called in, and grievances removed, by a speedy redress afforded to all complainants of unjust inquisitions; or, if the King be determined to continue it, that at least the gathering in of his debts be excepted therefrom.
