The Earl of Sunderland to the Lord Deputy of Ireland. I have received by Major-Gen. Maccarty yours of the 24th and another of Aug. 29, and have several particulars to answer from others.
The business of Mr. Robinson is in the hands of the Lords Commissioners of the Treasury, so that I need give you no further account of it. For what relates to the present Duke of Ormonde, the King, having allowed of his election to be Chancellor of Oxford and Steward of Westminster, thinks fit likewise to allow of his being Chancellor of the College of Dublin and would have you let it pass without taking any more notice of it.
As to the noise of the preparations made by our neighbours, the King is very well assured that whatever the design may be it is not against him. However, his Majesty is putting his army and fleet into such a condition as may be necessary on this occasion, and is sufficiently satisfied of the fidelity both of the seamen and soldiers and of their affection and zeal for his service, whatever reports ill men may spread abroad to the contrary. This his Majesty commands me to tell you, not only because it is for his service to discountenance such reports, but because it is really true, and therefore much more necessary and of importance to detect their falsity and disabuse those who otherwise might give credit to them. All the Dissenters are satisfied and the Church of England's principles will keep them loyal, though they may be indiscreet. In short I believe there never was in England less thoughts of rebellion and, when the Parliament meets, this I doubt not will be evident to all the world.
I desire you will show Lord Kingsale all the favour you can in his pretensions. It must be left to you what may be most proper in it, and I will do what you think necessary.

The Earl of Lindsey to the King. The newsletters having this post informed me of the intelligence your Majesty has received of the design of the Hollanders landing at Burlington in co. York, I should, as old as I am, have taken post upon this occasion to have received such commands as are in order to your service. But presuming I could not be any where more useful to your Majesty than in the county of Lincoln I shall here expect your commands.
Postscript: The militia here is in great disorder by the removal of the chief gentry out of commission, and hearing musters were not pleasing to your Majesty they have met but once since your coronation. I beg to know what you would have done as to them. Monsieur de Bussey posts up with this, who served you in the West and still desires to expose his life to all hazards in the defence and preservation of your royal person.

Stowe.
The Earl of Bath to [the Earl of Sunderland]. I have received his Majesty's most gracious letter of the 22nd of this month, counter-signed by your Lordship, signifying his Majesty's pleasure for the restoring of the displaced Deputy Lieutenants and Justices of the Peace to their former commissions. I have also received his Majesty's gracious Declaration enclosed therein
They came to my hands at Lostwithiell where I had then appointed a meeting of the Convocation of Tinners, which consists of most of the chief gentlemen of the County, who are principally concerned in the contents of the said letter, by which good fortune I had an opportunity of imparting both the letter and the Declaration to the whole County at once, which created a general satisfaction and joy in the hearts of them all.
At night we had a bonfire, where we drank his Majesty's health, the Queen's, and our Duke of Cornwall's, which were the only expressions of rejoicing we could make in a small country town besides our repeated vows of duty and allegiance.
His Majesty by this one gracious act has done a great work, having settled the minds of the people even beyond expectation, and in a great measure dispelled those ills which I could not choose but fear would be the consequences of the late imprudent management of affairs in these parts by Mr. Nosworthy and others of the Regulators here—my apprehensions whereof I have expressed to my Lord Godolphin in the same letter that gives an account of the progress we had made in the Tin Farm, written before I had received his Majesty's Declaration.
To which letter I crave leave humbly to refer your Lordship because there is something in it that as I conceive is of great importance to his Majesty's present service in this juncture, which is concerning Mr. Nosworthy's ill conduct in the Regulations of the Corporations of this County, which may yet be somewhat redressed, if his Majesty's directions were given to that purpose, which is the only thing remains to make this great blessing perfect.
As the case now stands, if they proceed immediately to election of Parliament men, there will of necessity be disputes in most places. Scarce a Corporation knows its own magistrates; some of the old ones displaced by mistakes and misnomers, most of the new unduly chosen by reason of their ignorance of the Constitutions in the several Charters, with many other errors which are more largely set forth in my said letter. All which irregularities might be reduced to their proper cause in a fortnight's time or thereabouts; the days for electing new mayors throughout all the County by their Charters being within that compass.
I have sent an express to our High Sheriff with his Majesty's Declaration and a copy of his Majesty's letter with my thoughts what would be the most proper expedient to avoid those many difficulties which are likely to arise in the ensuing elections.
I have likewise taken care for communicating of his Majesty's letter and Declaration to the Gentlemen of co. Devon, where I doubt not it will be received with equal joy. With all due deference submitting all things to his Majesty's pleasure, which I humbly desire to receive from your Lordship, I am, my Lord, your Lordship's most humble and most faithful servant.
Postscript: [I am] just going to Plymouth, where [the King's] commands or your Lordship's will find me.

Sherborne.
The Earl of Bristol to the Earl of Sunderland. I yesterday received a writ of summons to the ensuing Parliament and also a writ directed to the High Sheriff of this county, which I sent him. He answered that he would see it punctually executed. This writ being sent me, I suppose I am continued Lieutenant of the county. By my letter to you of June 4, I signified that I had called in all the deputations according to my directions and that most of those gentlemen being officers of the militia, they would also deliver up their commissions, which they did. Not knowing any others fit for their command, I desired you to beg the King to excuse me from acting as his Lieutenant. Having received no positive answer, I have not acted since, so that at present there is no Deputy Lieutenant nor militia officer in the county. I desire you by the next post to let me know his Majesty's pleasure herein.

Lord Aston to the Earl of Sunderland. If I may hope you remember the absolute prohibition I have had of meddling with the militia of this county, by which really there is at present no militia at all, I should presume you would send me instructions what course I must take in case the alarms we have increase. I presume there are several besides Roman Catholics that will be glad in defence of his Majesty to sell their lives as dear as they can, and the disquiet that I perceive begins to grow makes me heartily wish to be armed by some directions from you. The writs for the Parliament being delivered to me yesterday, and not to the Sheriffs, leaves me uncertain whether the intention be I should for some time detain them or transmit them in order to be proceeded upon.

The Earl of Sunderland to the Earl of Lindsey. The King having received your letter of the 27th is very well pleased with your offer of service and expected no less from a person of so approved loyalty. He thinks your being in the county of Lincoln at this time will conduce most to his service, and leaves it to you to restore such Deputy Lieutenants and other officers as you shall think fit and in case of emergency to call such part of the militia together as may best be trusted and shall be necessary for preserving the peace of the county.

Robert Hall to Philip Frowde, at the General Post Office, London. Yesterday I went on board the Content of Guernsey, Peter Valet master, that came out from Rotterdam on Monday. While he was there he was forced from the quays to make room for several great vessels that loaded horses, hay and oats, working all days alike for expedition. He saw 23 hoys lading with soldiers, mostly dragoons, and there was great discourse of millions of Spanish coin brought over from England and that there are quantities of English seamen listing in the service of the Prince of Orange, not in the name of the States; and in the same name they are beating up for volunteers. He came out from Brill on Wednesday night, at which time there came three fireships. He passed the fleet four or five leagues at sea near Goree. Most of the great fly-boats were taken up, some at 1100 gilders a month and insured besides. It was said that the fleet would consist of 400 vessels, great and small.
