1047. Brother Leander of S. Martino, Vicar-General of the Benedictine Congregation of Spain, and of the English Mission, to Cardinal Federigo Borromeo.
Institutum sacratissimarum missionum pro fide Catholica propagenda et propugnanda cui te praese cognovimus, facit mini magnam scribendi audaciam, ut quamvis ipsemet homo sim vere ignobilis et ignotus, pio missione tamen monachorum anglorum congregationis Ispanice ad fidem in Anglia promovendam cujus, indignissimus scilicet, vicarius a superioribus meis constitutus sum, patrocinium magnanime pietatis tuae inplorem, et nunc quidem hac presenti escriptione gratam solum significationem mei erga A. F. officii, quod erit, volente Deo, perfectum et infaticabile umiliter exibeo rogo qui obnixe ut benigno vultu placidoque affectu me fratrem qui homines meos in tuam quasi clientelam concedentem agnoscas et se autoritate tua apud Sanctissimum Dom. foreas ac tuearis. Policemur (divina nobis anuente gratia) eam inproffesione functione qui nostram fidem, sedulitatem, integritatem nos exibituros ut favoris tui patrocinium non inutiliter in nobis hornandis fovendisque colocatum agnoscas. Deus opt. max. Ill. et Rev. D.V. conservet semper incolumem ac maximis honoribus florentem ad ecclesiae Catholicae ornamentum et sacrosancte fidei nostre augmentum.
Duaci in Belgio, 13 Maii, 1613.
Humilis ac devotus in Christo servus.
[Signed] F. Leander di S. Martino, Benedictinus Anglus, Benedictorum congregationis Ispanie et missionis Anglicane vicarius generalis.
