Lord Grey to tarry at Haddington so long as he can. The horsemen also so long as they can get forage. The house of Yester [Ester] to be razed if not soon fortified.

The work before the castle gate of Berwick to be finished. If the Scots invade the East March, Lord Wharton to send aid as Lord Grey writes for—if on the West March, the latter shall send aid, and go in person if the case require. Lawson to have 100 soldiers to train, and leave his lieutenant and 10 men in Warke.

Lord Grey's request as to charges will not be made a precedent, but considered as cause appears.

Lord Nevill on the galleys' coming, to go with men to Hartelpole. Gamboa to have prests to a mark a day. Captains 5s., some notable personages 20d., the rest ordinary.

No Scot to serve in a fortress without special council letters.

Each captain in turn to watch in person—and all officers to be present "and not to ronne in ded paies."

The assured Scots to wear red crosses fast sewed [on their jacks or coats] and if taken without, to be held as [enemies or] unassured.

No assured Scot to commune with an unassured without license; and the lands of the latter to be let to such assured Scots as will defend them.

On news of the galleys, lord Grey to send a boat to warn the Captain of Broughty—and meanwhile to send timber there for the platform, and order another well to be sunk. The Master of Ruthen to be sent hither immediately. John Russe (fn. 1) to be sent to Carlisle to do as Lord Wharton appoints him.

The Captain of Haddington to train as many hackbutters as he can; do all he can to get George Douglas in his hands, and having him, keep him: and notwithstanding any treaty, destroy the country as he may. The church of Haddington to be taken down.
