J. Taylour (in the absence of William Lowndes) to the Navy Treasurer. The Lord Treasurer understands that the Bank of England has agreed to advance 50,000l. on the tallies and orders in your hands [standing or ranking for payment] in a near course on the eleventh 4s. Aid anno 1708 [the Land Tax by 6 Anne, c. 35]. You are to accept same and to assign the equivalent value in such tallies &c. to said Bank with 5 per cent. interest from the date you receive the money. On your sending to the Treasury the said orders with your assignments [endorsed] thereon, warrants will be given to the Exchequer for paying the interest accordingly. The said sum is to be applied to wages and recalls and placed to account of the quota for wages anno 1708. Ibid., p. 12.

William Lowndes to Mr. Brydges, Paymaster General of the Forces Abroad. The Lord Treasurer has reason to hope that the expense which has been so long continued of maintaining [the British] prisoners in France will soon be at an end by the general exchange [of prisoners] lately made and desires from you an account of moneys issued for the subsistence of such prisoners in France and likewise an account of what the pay would have been of the discontinued Regiments which [pay] was intended to be the fund for the maintenance of the said prisoners: all in order that the money may be properly charged.
The Lord Treasurer also notices that your certificates of receipts and payments are not regularly transmitted hither [to the Treasury] and those which he has seen do not answer his expectation, for your payments therein are not ranged under the proper heads but put confusedly together so that his Lordship can in no case judge whether the money received by you be applied to the service directed by his Lordship, to wit those services on your memorials which he agrees to from time to time. In your future certificates you are to take care that the balance brought over be so particularised that his Lordship may know to what heads of expense it belongs; and that all the money issued to you within the time of each certificate be charged under the proper heads for which it was issued and so in like manner discharged under the same proper heads as it is applied and paid by you from time to time and the remains at the foot of each certificate distinguished again so as to show the particular heads of expense for which it is intended.
The Lord Treasurer likewise desires to know in what forwardness your accounts are, especially those relating to the Forces in Flanders about which you have long since received his Lordship's particular directions but do not acquaint him how they are prosecuted. Out Letters (General) XIX, pp. 84–5.
