Jan. 1. William Lowndes to the Customs Commissioners, Scotland. The Lord Treasurer approves of your care in viewing and securing Mr. Graydon's cash upon the news of his death and the method that has been taken of carrying on his receipt till appointment of his successor. Out Letters (North Britain) II, p. 288.
Jan. 2. Thomas Harley to Charles Cæsar, Navy Treasurer to assign to the Bank of England the 100,000l. directed Dec. 22 last [supra, Calendar of Treasury Books, Vol. XXV, p. 601] to be issued to you at the Exchequer out of loans to be made by yourself on Land Tax 1712. The said assignment is to be in satisfaction of 100,000l. which you received from the Bank for the service of the Navy and Victualling Nov. 6 last, for security of which you were directed to deposit with the Bank 110,000l. tallies on Malt anno 1711. The Lord Treasurer therefore directs that on depositing the said Land Tax tallies as above you take care that the said malt tallies be reassigned to you and that the interest for the said 100,000l. loan be stated and agreed between you and the Bank, both sets of tallies carrying the same interest, to wit 6 per cent. The said statement of interest is to be laid before the Lord Treasurer to be paid and allowed in the usual manner. Disposition Book XXI, p. 226.
William Lowndes to the Navy Commissioners to report on Mr. Brydger's letter, enclosed [missing], received by the Lord Treasurer from the Admiralty complaining of abuses committed by those employed by Mr. Collins in cutting down masts in the woods in New England. Out Letters (General) XX, p. 82.
Warrant by Treasurer Oxford to the Customs Commissioners to employ Edward Davis as collector of Southwold port loco Mr. Kettelby.
Prefixing: report of said Commissioners on the petition of said Davis. We are satisfied of his ability from a certificate of the Examiners of the outport collectors' accounts and from a certificate of the surveyors and landwaiters of London port; which certificates we annex [missing]. Treasury reference to the Barons of the Exchequer, Scotland, of the petition of the Earl of Lauderdale shewing that he pays to her Majesty for the Lordship of Lauderdale, Haltoun and Glassery some Blench, Retour, Taxtward and Nonentrie Duties which in all amount to 274l. 18s. 11d. sterling; and praying a discharge and exoneration of the said Duties, "the like favour having been always granted by the Crown to his ancestors." Jan. 3. Money warrant for 875l. to the Commissioners for Stating the Public Accounts (Henry Bertie, Geo. Lockhart, Salway Winnington, Fra. Annesley, Thos. Lister, William Shippen and Henry Campion as by the Act of last Session, 9 Anne, c. 18) for one quarter due to them at Xmas 1711 on their 3,500l. for their care and pains, which sum is appropriated to them in another Act of last Session, 9 Anne, c. 16, for Licensing Hackney Coaches. Jan. 3. Same for 35l. to Richard, Earl of Ranelagh, Keeper of Cranburne Chase in Windsor Forest, for 1¾ years from 1710 Lady day for his expense in providing hay for the deer within the said Chase. (Letter of direction dated Jan. 9 hereon.)
In the margin: the Earl of Ranelagh dying before this money could be received the warrant was cancelled and another signed for paying the same to the underkeepers of Cranborne Chase. See under date May 7, infra, p. 270. Money Book XXI, p. 405. Disposition Book XXI, p. 214.
Warrant by Treasurer Oxford to Auditor Thomas Jett to make forth a debenture on the Receiver concerned, for paying to Richard, Earl of Ranelagh, 170l. 6s. 8d. for 14 years 1697 Sept, 29 to 1711 Sept. 29 on his fee of 8d. a day as Keeper of Cranburne Chase.
Prefixing: report by said Jett to Treasurer Oxford dated 1711 Dec. 4. Upon examining the old views in my Office I find that the respective fees of 40s. per an. as steward and 4l. per an. as bailiff of the manors of Clewer and Clewer Brocas claimed by the said Earl are ancient fees, but have not been paid since the year 1663, the rents of the said manors being alienated from the Crown and no courts held there since that time. There is a fee of 8d. a day due to the Keeper of Cranburne Chase and Lodge which was duly paid out of the rents of the Honor and Castle of Windsor to Michaelmas 1697, at which time the rents of the said Honour and Castle were alienated from the Crown. "But if your Lordship shall be pleased to gratify the petitioner the Few Rents which have since been surrendered will be sufficient to satisfy the said fee of 8 pence per diem." Thomas Harley to Lord Lansdown [Secretary at War]. The Lord Treasurer has received a letter signed B. B. complaining that the Foot Guards are not paid their subsistence so far as it is ordered. My Lord has sent same to Mr. How [Paymaster General of Guards and Garrisons], who proposes that it should be sent to the Commanding Officer of each Regiment. Please so send it "with directions that they hasten to remove the difficulties which occasion the said complaint." Out Letters (General) XX, p. 83.
Warrant by Treasurer Oxford to the Customs Commissioners to deliver to Monsieur [Wilhelm] Willers, the King of Prussia's Minister [Resident] at Venice, his plate and other things on his giving a note under his hand that same will be carried away with him at his departure: all on the request of Monsieur Bonet [André Louis Frédéric Bonet de St. Germain], the said King's Minister [Resident, in London].

Same by same to same to permit Thomas Clarke of London, merchant, in behalf of his correspondents the merchants of Bristol, owners of the Peterborough frigate and Tyger, to land some sugar, cotton and indico taken by her Majesty's ship Panther from the enemy and condemned as prize at Barbados, on giving security to pay the Duties and interest thereon from date of landing if not relieved therein by Act of Parliament before March 25 next.
Prefixing: said Commissioners' report on said Clarke's petition praying such permit to land "in regard the Duties insisted on by virtue of a late Act of Parliament [10 Anne, c. 30] is far greater than has ever yet been paid and more than some of the goods will yield, that the goods may be landed and secured in warehouses till relief can be had this Session as in the late case of prize cocoa in London," reported on by the said Commissioners Oct, 17 last. Treasurer Oxford to the Sheriff of Sussex. Some time since I sent you a letter directed to the Land Tax Commissioners for Co. Sussex desiring them to get in the arrears of Land Tax anno 1710 and House Duty arrears. Nevertheless there remains 3,215l. yet in arrear for the said year and 22,026l. on the first and second quarterly payments of the present year [1711] and little has been paid for the Duty on Houses. I herein send you another letter [missing] to the same effect and desire you to cause it to be communicated to the Commissioners acting in each Hundred or Division. Please send me the names of the Commissioners to whom you communicate same with their answer thereto.

Thomas Harley to Mr. Brydges. The widows of Officers who receive pensions out of stoppages have represented that they are a year in arrear thereon, although there is so much stopped as will pay them. Please report hereon to my Lord. Also please transmit to your deputy in Spain the memorial of Robert Cole, her Majesty's Consul at Algiers, praying that a sum of money due to him from the King of Spain for corn sold for his account at Barcelona may be stopped out of the subsidy payable to the said King. Same to Mr. Brydges, Paymaster of the Forces Abroad, It has been represented to my Lord, on behalf of the Officers of Foot of the Subject Troops in the Low Countries, that their accounts continue in great disorder and particular Officers are under the greatest hardships for want of that part of the recruit money which is to be allowed them as royal bounty, pursuant to the Queen's warrant (being 40s. per man). Please state the demands of each Regiment in respect of such recruits and propose how the same may best be satisfied. Ibid.
Jan. 8. Same to the Comptrollers of the Accounts of the Army enclosing papers [missing] which have been read to my Lord importing that the money stopped from the Subject Troops for bread is not paid to Sir Solomon de Medina (of which he complains) for want of his producing proper vouchers to the Paymaster. Please discourse Sir Solomon about this affair and inform yourselves how far he has complied with that part of his contract which requires the exportation of corn from Great Britain. Ibid., p. 87.

Warrant by same to George, Lord Lansdown, Secretary at War, to prepare a royal warrant to authorise the Paymaster of Guards and Garrisons to pay 360l. for fire and candle furnished and provided for the Regiment of Foot Guards doing duty at Edinburgh for three years from 25 Dec. 1707 to 22 Dec. 1710, being at the rate of 120l. per an.: and for the payment of the like annual sum from Xmas 1710 during such time as they shall continue to do duty there; and to direct the placing this whole expense to account of Contingencies, "no part thereof having been, as I am informed, paid out of her Majesty's revenue in Scotland."
Prefixing: report by John Howe, Paymaster of Guards and Garrisons, on the memorial of the Marquess of Lothian desiring payment of 175l. to said Regiment for their arrear of fire and candle for the Guards kept there for the above period and an established allowance of 190l. per an. thereafter. Hereon Howe reports that according to the Establishment 300l. per an. is paid to the First Regiment of Guards and 150l. to the Second Regiment for fire and candle for the Guards attending her Majesty and doing duty in the several palaces in London, but there is no such provision "made for the [abovesaid Scotch] Regiment after the Union." I propose 120l. per an. as above as in proportion to the number and expense of the Guards. Ibid., pp. 341–2.

Same to the Board of Ordnance. The Swedish Minister has laid a memorial before the Queen representing that seven Swedish ships which were employed in bringing home stores for the service of her [Britannic] Majesty's Navy had their guns and ammunition taken from them at Copenhagen by order of the King of Denmark. The Queen declared her pleasure that she would make good the damage sustained by the masters of the said ships. In your report of Sept. 28 last as to the amount of damage sustained by the masters of the said ships, you estimate it at 805l. 14s. 3¼d. You are to make out a bill according to the method of your Office for paying same to them in full of said losses. "But you are to take care to use the best means you can for recovering the said arms and stores for the Queen's use." Ibid., p. 92.
