PRAYERS.

Gray's Petition.

ORDERED, That the Petition of John Gray, & al', this Day presented to the House, be referred to the Committee for the Navy.

Ecclesiastical Appointment.

Ordered, That Mr. White do prepare an Ordinance for to enjoin the Dean and Chapter of Lincolne, to collate * * to the Living of *, in the County of Leicester.

Hide's Sequestration.

Ordered, That Hoogan Houell, Jo. Dolbye, and Rob. Gravener, Citizens, be nominated and appointed Sequestrators of the Estate of Hamlett Hide Esquire.

Committees added.

Ordered, That Tho. Templer, Abraham Burrell, Edw. Mountague of Hinchinbrooke, Apollo Pepis, and Tho. Cater, Esquires, be added to the Committees named in the Ordinances for Sequestrations, and weekly Assessment.

Withipoole's Petition.

Ordered, That the humble Petition of Sir Wm. Withipoole Knight, a Prisoner in Winchester-house, and the Consideration of the State and Condition of the Cause and Ground of the Commitment of the said Sir Wm. Withipoole, be referred to the Committee for Examinations.

Customer at Waymouth.

Ordered, That it be referred to the Committee for the Navy, to consider of the Informations against Mr. Lawrence, Customer at Waymouth; and to consider whether Mr. Sley, nominated to this House, be a fit Man for that Employment.

King's Printers.

Ordered, That it be referred to the Committee at Haberdashers Hall, to consider of some Course for improving and turning the Profits and Advantages of the Office of the King's Printers, to the Benefit of the Commonwealth.

Regulating Printing.

An Ordinance to prevent and suppress the Licence of Printing, was this Day read; and, by Vote, upon the Question, assented unto; and ordered to be sent unto the Lords for their Concurrence.

Removing a Prisoner.

Ordered, That Sir Rob. Harley do take care, and give Order for the sending of Wm. Sheares, a Printer, and now a Prisoner in Newgate, to Colchester Gaol.

Isle of Wight.

The House being informed, that Colonel Carne was at the Door, to present a Petition; he was called in; and did prefer the humble Petition of the Inhabitants of the Isle of Wight: Which was this Day read; desiring, that they might have Authority from both Houses, to raise Three hundred Men, under his Command, to do Duty, for the Defence of the said Isle.

Resolved, That Mr. Lisle, Sir H. Mildmay, and Mr. Ellis, do prepare an Ordinance for enabling Colonel Tho. Carne, to raise and command Three hundred Men, for the Service and Defence of the Island.

Colonel Carne was again called in; and Mr. Speaker, by the Command of the House, acquainted him, that the House had considered of the Petition preferred by him; and had taken Course to answer their Desires; and did further take notice of the Carriage of the said Colonel Carne, and the Inhabitants; and did return him Thanks; and desire him to return Thanks to the Inhabitants; And, being demanded what Members of the House were there, answered, That Sir H. Worseley and Sir Jo. Leigh were there; and that Sir Jo. Meaux, he did believe, was with the King.

Ordered, That Sir H. Woreseley, Sir Jo. Leigh, and Sir Jo. Meaux, be summoned to attend the House.

Payments to Treasurer at Wars.

Ordered, That Mr. Cambell be summoned to attend the House; and that he do, within these Six Days at farthest, pay in the Five hundred Pounds, long since promised, upon the Propositions, to the Treasurers upon the Propositions; who are hereby required to pay the said Five hundred Pounds to the Treasurer at Wars; and he to Mr. White, Agent for the Lord Fairfax; upon Account. And whereas, there is One thousand Pounds of the Sequestration Monies, coming out of Huntingtonshire; it is likewise Ordered, That the Treasurers for the Sequestration Monies do pay the said One thousand Pounds, so soon as they shall have received it, to the Treasurer at Wars; who is required to pay the same, upon Account, to Mr. White, Agent for the Lord Fairefax.

Meaux's Estate.

Ordered, That the Committee, where Mr. Trenchard has the Chair, do take Course, that the Monies, promised by Sir Jo. Meaux may be levied upon his Estate.

Monies seized.

Ordered, That the last Order made, concerning the Monies seized of Mr. Rosse, shall stand, and be put in Execution: And that it be referred to Mr. Green, and Sir Wm. Armyn, to treat between the Parties concerned; and to accommodate the Matters, in the best manner they may.

Powder for North Wales.

Ordered, That the Committee for the Navy do forthwith take Order for furnishing of Sir Tho. Middleton with Fifty Barrels of Powder, out of the Two hundred and Seventeen Barrels of Powder to be sent to Portsmouth. And it is further Ordered, That the Committee for the Safety of the Kingdom do give Order, that the said Fifty Barrels of Powder be returned into the Stores for the Service of Portesmouth. Which Powder the said Sir Tho. Middleton is to convey to the County of Denbigh, for the Service of North Wales, for the better Safety and Defence thereof.

Message to Lords.

Mr. Whittlock carried up to the Lords, the Ordinance concerning the Earl of Denbigh, to command in chief the Forces of the Four associated Counties of Worcester, Salop, &c.; the Ordinance concerning Timber to be assigned to the Town of Swanburne, in the County of Bucks, &c.; the additional Names to the Committees for the County of Huntingdon: And was to desire a Conference upon the Three Heads Yesterday appointed.

Visiting Sir H. Pollard.

Ordered, That Mr. Dowse do inquire after the Information given, of the Earl of Northumberland's Coach carrying some Ladies of Quality to visit Sir Hugh Pollard.

Officer of Stores.

Ordered, That Mr. White, one of the Officers of the Stores, be put into the Possession of the House, and shall live in that Part of the Lodgings, that Mr. Sherbourne formerly had: And that the Captain of the Guard be required to see this done accordingly.

The Tower.

Ordered, That the Committee for the Safety of the Tower, do meet there this Afternoon, to consider of the Condition of the Gentleman Gaoler, the Wardours; and to put such of them out of their Places, as they shall find to be suspected, and unfaithful to the Service; and to put others in their steads.

Ordered, That Sir H. Mildmay be added to the Committee for the Safety of the Tower.

Answer from Lords.

Mr. Whittlock brings Answer, that to the Two Ordinances concerning the County of Bucks, and concerning the Earl of Denbigh, they will send Answer by Messengers of their own: As to the alteration of the Names, and the Addition of Names to the Committees for Sequestrations, and weekly Assessments, in the Country of Huntingdon, they do agree: And will give a present Meeting, at a Conference, upon the Heads desired.

Impeachment of the Queen.

Ordered, That Mr. Serjeant Wilde do, on Monday Morning next, bring in the Articles of Impeachment, against the Queen, and the Earl of Newcastle.

Reducing Newcastle.

Ordered, That the Ten of the Committee for reducing of Newcastle do meet this Afternoon, to consider of that Business.

Prisoners.

Lord Wenman is appointed to desire, that, at this Conference, they may confer concerning the Ordinance touching Prisoners.

Cambridge University

A Message from the Lords by Mr. Page and Dr. Aylett; The Lords desire, that at this Conference they may present unto you a Petition from the University of Cambridge.

Answer returned by the same Messengers; that the House has considered their Lordships Message; and do agree, that, at this Conference, the Petition shall be communicated from the University of Cambridge.

Prisoners.

Lord Wenman brings Answer, that, at this new Conference, the Lords do agree, that one Head should be, concerning the Ordinance touching Prisoners.

Archbishop of Canterbury.

A Message from the Lords by Mr. Page and Dr. Aylett;

The Lords have commanded us to deliver unto you a Petition they have received from the Archbishop of Canterbury: They have taken the Petition into Consideration; and have made an Order upon it; and desire the Concurrence of this House.

The Order was read; and by Vote, upon the Question, assented unto; and ordered to be forthwith printed.

Cambridge University.

Sir H. Mildmay presented, from the Conference, the humble Petition of the University of Cambridge: The which being read, Sir H. Mildmay reported, that the Earl of Manchester said, that the University of Cambridge was a Fountain of Piety and Learning; and to afford Countenance and Relief to this University, is to give Encouragement to Learning; and will make the University depend upon it.

Mr. Rous, Sir H. Mildmay, Mr. Corbett, Sir Peter Wentworth, Sir. Tho. Barrington, Mr. Lisle, Mr. Gourdon, Mr. Prideaux, Mr. Noble, Mr. Serjeant Wilde, Mr. Hill, Mr. Trinchard, Dr. Eden, Mr. Pym, Mr. Lucas, Mr. Cage, Mr. Holles, Sir Nath. Barnardiston, Mr. Salloway, Mr. Lowry, Mr. Jo. Goodwyn.

This Committee is to consider of the humble Petition of the University of Cambridge, this Day presented to the House, from a Conference with the Lords; and are to consider of some Means of extending Relief unto them, in the Things prayed by them, in such manner, as that those that have expressed their ill Affections to the Proceedings of the Parliament, may share as little in it as may be: They are likewise to inquire into the Abuses and Innovations brought into the University; and to consider of some effectual Means of reforming it, and purging it from all Abuses, Innovations, and Superstitions: They are likewise to consider of the State of Emanuel College, and of all Informations that shall be presented concerning it; and of the Carriage and Behaviour of Dr. Holdsworth, the Master thereof; by what means he came into that Place, and whether, by his Demeanour since, he hath not forfeited the said Place: They are likewise to consider of the Delinquency of Dr. Holdsworth, in licensing Books to be printed, in Prejudice, and to the Scandal, of the Parliament; and likewise, of a Sermon preached by him on Sunday was Sevennight, at Ely House, where he is a Prisoner; and of the Carriages upon it; and likewise, of the Letter from Dr. Holdsworth, touching the Bishop of Yorke's Books, bestowed many Years since by him upon the College of St. John's in Cambridge: They are likewise to consider, what Governors of the University Colleges, or others, have sent Plate to the King: And have Power to send for Parties, Witnesses, Papers, Records: And are to meet on Monday next, at Two post Meridiem, in the Exchequer Chamber.

The Covenant.

Ordered, That the Burgesses that serve for the University and Town of Cambridge, do send down, to the said University and Town, Copies of the Covenant appointed to be taken through the Kingdom; and that they require, that the Names of such may be returned, that take the Covenant, and that refuse it.

Escapes of Prisoners.

Ordered, That it be referred to the Committee for Dispatches, to consider of the Demeanour and Carriages of the Serjeant, in respect of Prisoners that have escaped; and to consider of the Escapes of all other Prisoners out of other Prisons.

Person sent for.

Resolved, &c. That Mr. Hall, of Emanuel College, be forthwith sent for, as a Delinquent, for not obeying the Order of this House, of Nine-and-twentieth of March 1642, declaring, that, according to the Statutes of that College, de mora sociorum, he was superannuated; and ought not to stay any longer there, notwithstanding any Dispensation to the contrary.

Warrant to Lady Butler.

Resolved, &c. That the Lady Gratian Butler, Wife to Colonel Cockram, Prisoner in Windesor Castle, shall have Mr. Speaker's Warrant to go to Windesor, and to visit her Husband, a Prisoner there.

Town of Waymouth.

Ordered, That the Committee for the Navy do forthwith take Order for furnishing the Town of Waymouth with Twenty Barrels of Powder, out of the Two hundred and Seventeen Barrels of Powder to be sent to Portesmouth. And it is further Ordered, That the Committee for the Safety of the Kingdom do give Order, that the said Twenty Barrels of Powder be returned into the Stores, for the Service of Portesmouth.

Ordered, That the Petition of the Inhabitants of the Town of Weymouth be referred to the Consideration of the Committee for the Safety of the Kingdom.

Prisoners of War.

Ordered, That the Committee for Examinations do dispose of Sir Roger Twisden, and the other Prisoners taken with him, to such Prisons as they shall think fit; and that Mr. Corbett shall have the Rings taken upon them; and the Soldiers, that took them, and brought them up, the Money and the Swords.

Sequestred Goods.

Ordered, That the sequestred Goods of the Earl of Bristoll, and the Lord Digby, be sold, after the usual manner; and the Proceed thereof paid in to the Treasurers; and by them paid over, upon Accompt, unto Mr. Trenchard and Mr. Serjeant Wilde, for the Service of the Forces under the Command of Sir Wm. Waller; notwithstanding any former Order made concerning those Goods.

The Tower, &c.

Ordered, That the great Saddle and Horse Arms, and other Arms, of the Earl of Newport, seized in the Tower, be delivered to Sir Tho. Middleton; and that the rest of the Goods, seized there, be sent to Campden House; and that the Committee for the Tower do send to * * Receiver of the Aulnage Monies upon white Cloths, and command from him Two hundred Pounds, remaining in his Hands, to be employed for the Service and Security of the Tower.

Lady Butler's &c. Petition.

Ordered, That the Petition from the Lady Butler and her Husband, this Day presented to the House, be referred to the Committee for the Affairs of Ireland, where Mr. Goodwyn has the Chair; to consider of some way for her Relief.

Babington's Petition.

Ordered, That Mr. Babington's Petition, this Day presented to the House, be referred to the Consideration of the Committee for the Navy.

Gourdon's Bond, &c.

Ordered, That the Officers in the Duchy Court, whom it may concern, do deliver up to Mrs. Gourdon the Bond of One hundred Pounds, entered into by her Husband Edward Gurdon, and Sureties, Receiver of Part of the Duchy Rents: And this House will save the said Officers indemnified.

And it is further Ordered, That the said Mrs. Gurdon shall pay unto the Treasurers at Guildhall, London, the One hundred and Forty Pounds remaining in her Hands, as Part of the said Duchy Rents received by her Husband.

Apprehending Papists, &c.

Ordered, That Sir George Kemp, and other the Papists in Lincolne's Inn Fields, shall be forthwith apprehended, and their Persons seized on; and that a diligent Search be made, in their several Houses, for Arms and Ammunition, &c. and that the same be also seized upon: And the Care of putting this Order in Execution is recommended to Colonel Moore, Mr. Whittacres, and Mr. Gourdon: And all Colonels, Captains, and other Officers, are hereby required to be aiding and assisting to the said Colonel Moore, or any of the Gentlemen aforesaid, in the apprehending and seizing of the said Persons, and searching their Houses, as aforesaid.
