April 1644

April 2. Order of the House of Commons, that the Committee at Goldsmiths' Hall bring in an ordinance for imposing a penalty upon such assessors as refuse to assess the moneys within the City and Suburbs, upon the ordinance for raising 66,666l. 0s. 8d. for the Scots. [G 1, p. 6.]
April 5. Order of the Committee for Scottish Affairs, that the treasurers repay with interest sums lent last December by well-affected persons, to make up 4,000l. towards providing 10,000 suits of clothes for the Scottish army in Ireland, on promise of repayment in 3 months out of sums so raised by the ordinance of 27 February last for Scottish affairs. April 5. Order of the Committee at Goldsmiths' Hall, that the treasurers accept and pay sums charged on them by letters of credit, or bills f exchange, from Sir Wm. Armyne, Thos. Hatcher, Rob. Goodwin, Hen. Darley, Rob. Fenwick, and Rich. Barwis, Commissioners from the Parliament of England to Scotland, during their continuance with the Scots' army, not exceeding in all 25,000l. [G 2, p. 76.]
April 8. Order of the House of Commons that, to enable the speedy raising of a considerable sum for the Scots' Army in England and Ireland, an ordinance be passed by both Houses, to the same effect as formerly, to levy by way of assessment 66,666l 6s. 8d., being another third part of the 200,000l. appointed by both Houses for the purposes aforesaid to our brethren of Scotland, and for which the public faith of both kingdoms is engaged.
That out of the ways and means above mentioned, or otherwise, or by the credit thereof, 30,000l. be shipped from hence to Carrickfergus, by the 15 May next, and upon which the said army may depend; and that the remainder of the 60,000l. be shipped away by the last of June next. The Committee at Goldsmiths' Hall to consider of the means of raising these moneys, and to offer to the House the probable way of bringing them in, and to take care with the Treasurers of the Sequestrations, that the Sequestration money may not be diverted to any other use, upon any pretence whatever. April 11. Order of the House of Commons, upon the question, that effectual course be taken for speedy collection of the Sequestrations appointed by both Houses for the 60,000l. to the Scots' Army in Ireland, and that this be recommended especially to the Committee for taking the Accounts of all the Kingdom.
That as another means for raising money for the affairs of Ireland, the bill presented by both Houses to his Majesty, for compelling the adventurers to pay the money due by their subscriptions. upon the Acts of Parliament for the purpose, be turned into an ordinance of Parliament. [G 1, pp. 7, 8.]
April 13. 6. Order of the House of Commons, that [Miles] Corbett be added to the Committee where [Peregrine] Pelham has the chair, concerning those that come in upon the Declaration of both Kingdoms. [⅓ page; also G 1, p. 9.]
April 16. Order of the House of Committee for Scottish Affairs, that the treasurers provide 4,000l. or 5,000l. in dollars, to be repaid from receipts for Scottish affairs, and send it speedily to the Scottish army, with other moneys procured for its present supply by the sub-committee appointed therefor. [G 1a, p. 19.]
April 17. Order of the Committee for Scottish Affairs that, as by order of Parliament of 11 April 1644, 30,000l. is to be provided and shipped for Carrickfergus, in Ireland, for the Scottish army there, the treasurers take up dollars, or any other money they can well raise. and pay the money to engage the said army to stay and go on in the war. What they take up on credit is to be repaid with interest in 3 months. [G 1a, p. 20.]
April 26. 7. Order of the Committee for Scottish Affairs, that Phil. Darell, auditor of Recusants' revenues, employed by this committee to make up books relating to the revenues in cos. Northumberland, Cumberland, Westmoreland, Durham, York, and Notts, and of arrears due thereon from 1 Charles, having brought in 4 of the said books, have 10l. imprest, and further recompense when he has brought in the other two.
