Parsons had a claim allowed by the Committee for Removing Obstructions on
4 Feb. 1652, to 86l. 6s. 8d. a year on Hardwick and Hurst Grange, and other
lands, and 40l. on Norton Manor, all co. Notts, late lands of the Earl of Newcastle, and sold by us 12 May 1652, to Wm. Clayton, who complains of damage
by reason of arrears of these rents due before his contract. We beg your order
to the county commissioners to pay off all such arrears. [G 111, p. 57.] |

James Dewy to the Committee for Compounding. Being appointed by the
Council of State one of the commissioners to examine those guilty in this last
war, I give you notice of a Mr. Combes, who by his own confession is guilty
in this late treasonable engagement of raising a new war. He has a large
fortune, and there are others in like case. Are we to secure their estates to
prevent the passing them away? |

Thanks be to God, we have prevented the most dangerous design to raise
a new war that ever was in our western parts since Goring was beat out of it.
I am busy taking examinations, and sending them to the Council of State.

10. i. Order in Parliament, 3 Sept., that all delinquents whose estates are not in
any Act for Sale, nor compounded for, and who are now under actual sequestration be admitted to composition at ⅓, according to the value of their estates in
1640. That those whose habitations are within80 miles of London perfect their
compositions in 2 months, paying their first moiety within 2 months, and the
rest within 2 months following, and those beyond 80 miles within 3 months,
their second moiety within 3 months following. That the Committee for
Compounding, in all cases not herein provided for, follow the former instructions, and that they have power to discharge the sequestration of all who
pay their fines. Those delinquents who compound not within the time
limited shall have their estates sold, according to a bill to be brought in by
this committee, the Committee for Compounding to take care that these notes

in behalf of Col. Pyne, on an information against Col. John Gorges, and his
brother Thomas, that further witnesses may be examined before publication,
the examinations to be by the examiner, on oath, and on interrogatories given
in by the respective parties, and the witnesses to appear in 3 weeks. John
Rogers of Cheddar, one of them, to be protected, as Col. Gorges has a verdict
at law against him for words in the charge, for which he might be taken up.

i. Information of Roger Pritchard that Mr. Wingfield, late porter to the Bishop
of Hereford, spoke bitterly against Parliament, and when asked for help for
a poor boy, whose mother was hanged by the King's party for giving notice to
the Scots of a sally, said that the child had better have been hanged with the
mother. 10 July 1646. Also, |

Information of Joan, wife of Rich. Greenliff of Kilpeck, that she was taken to the
palace prison by the King's soldiers as an intelligencer, when the Marquis of
Hertford got her exchanged; but Wingfield would not let her go for 4 days,
and charged her 1s. a day for her bed only. Her son was also taken prisoner
as a suspected intelligencer of Parliament. 1 Aug. 1646. [G 157, p. 355.] |

Deposition by John Vicaris that the charge made by Hen. Banks, jun., cobbler,
late of Bewdley, co. Worcester, is false. That Fras. England was hired by
Captain Boylston to make a false charge against Yarranton, who arrested
Boylston thereon, and that Banks has left the town lest Yarranton should bring
an action against him for the charge. That Yarranton tries to find him, and

i. Articles by Henry Banks, jun., against Andrew Yarranton, Commissioner for
co. Worcester. That in 1652, in presence of Capt. Wm. Collins, he got drunk
at Wolverhampton, and used violence. |

That when he examined witnesses, he asked if they needed spectacles, and
put them on spectacles with sharp pricks, which made their noses bleed. |
|
That he let the estate of Wm. Coningsby without the privity of the other
commissioners, who have retaken it. |
|
That he prosecuted Sir Wm. Russell violently to re-sequestration, but
offered to cease if he would give him 500l. |
|
That he sometimes threatens witnesses, and sometimes bribes them. |
|
That he is very quarrelsome, and beat Thos. Boylston, of Bewdley in the
streets of Worcester. |
|
That he spends much time in taverns and alehouses, drinking and
gaming, and boasts how much he can drink. |
|
That he promotes suits, and boasts of his power to ruin those who oppose him. |
|
That on 25 Aug. last, a thanksgiving day, he spent three hours in drinking
at Bewdley, and sent some aqua vitce to Thos. Boylston, who, with other religious and well-affected people, had set apart the day for worship. 9 Sept.

Petition of Walter Staile, executor of Rich. Cheesman, to the Committee for
Compounding. Cheesman being questioned for delinquency by the Committee for
Sequestrations and sub-committee of Somerset, was acquitted by them. There
is a charge depending before the Committee for Compounding against Colonel
John Gorges, one of the sub-committee,—exhibited by Col. Pyne, on the discovery
of the well-affected in that county, of Gorges receiving a judgment from
Cheesman on an action of account,—whereas there was never anything due to
him. |

Upon this it is supposed Cheesman was acquitted, there being a defeasance from the said Gorges that no advantage should be taken thereon till within
6 months after Cheesman's death, which being now expired, Gorges endeavours
to take forth execution on the judgment. As its legality is in question
before the Committee for Compounding, begs order for stay of execution.

sequestered estate of the Earl of Cleveland, being a seizure upon an extent of
some part of the estate which formerly belonged to Sir John Crofts. |

With note of reply 27 Sept., that the under-sheriff should be summoned
before the Committee for Compounding to answer his contempt in making a

Berrington's estate, being told by George Lynn, the clerk, that it had been
compared with the book of contracts, whereas there were no such contract;
but he only agreed if they would let the estate at 180l., the full value. |
