14 May 1651. Thos. Cooke, of Shepton Mallet, Somerset, petitions that Edward Davies, long before the wars, mortgaged for 800l. the greatest part of his lands in Lamyat to petitioner's father, Abraham Cooke, who died in 1640, and afterwards paid petitioner the said 800l., except 156l. 12s., for which, by DEED of 9 Dec. 1644, he demised to him a messuage and lands in Lamyat; by order of the County Committee of 5 Sept. 1649, was put into possession thereof, but the County Committee now forbid his tenants to pay him any rent, because the estate was omitted by Davies in his composition. Begs order for enjoying the estate till satisfied of his debt and damages, or otherwise examination of his title. Granted. 77

Claimant on the Estate.
19 July 1650. Francis Greenway, of Oxford, petitions that having 3 years ago bought the remainder of a lease for 15 years of a house in Oxford, held of University College, of Matthew Harrison, then under sequestration for delinquency, Harrison promised with the purchase money to free it from sequestration. He compounded, paid a moiety of his fine, and entered into bond for payment of the rest. The second payment was left in the hands of one Howse, an officer of this Committee, to pay, but both having failed to pay, petitioner's estate in the house is likely to be sequestered, it being set out at 22l. 10s., and the rest of the estate at 114l. Has spent 390l. on renewal of the lease, and in repairs 390l. As he hopes to prove that the rest of Harrison's estate was made over to Howse to pay the second moiety, he begs that the bond may be put in suit, or that the rest of the estate sold since he bought the house may pay proportionably. Noted, the treasurer to certify whether any bond were given for the second payment, meanwhile the County Committee to let the house to petitioner at the utmost improved value. 89 145
9 Aug. 1650. Begs that he paying the moiety for his house, it may be cleared; or that upon payment of the moiety for the whole estate compounded for, the estate may be sequestered till he is repaid with interest. 89 147

22 Dec. Order—on report that the cottages and lands were conveyed to Rich. Wyan, sen., and his son Thomas, by Edw. Belson and others for 1,105l. and 1400l., and that the father died in 1638, and left the premises to Thos. Wyan and Phil. The County Commissioners are also to inquire whether Jas. His house being within two miles of Banbury Castle and three miles of Compton House, whilst the one was a garrison for the King and the other for Parliament, he was enforced, to preserve himself and his family from utter ruin, to make contributions to the other side, yet willingly assisted the Parliament's forces, and for so doing was sent to Oxford, and there imprisoned six weeks in the common gaol. [Aug. 1653.] Lord Craven petitions Parliament. By its consent, went beyond seas before the war began, and has been out of England ever since, and never acted in any war against Parliament. Upon debate touching the putting his estate into a Bill of Sale, it was twice voted in the negative by the late Parliament, and at length carried in the affirmative by three voices at the most, there being only forty-seven present. His estate was accordingly sold, and a great part thereof purchased by the members who voted its sale. Could not obtain a hearing from the late Parliament against the Bill. Since that time the only witness upon whose testimony he was held guilty has been convicted of perjury for that deposition. Begs repeal of the vote and Act, so far as it concerns him. 78 189

21 Jan. 1650. The County Committee of Montgomery certify that Edw. Vaughan, [a secluded M.P., of Lloydiarth, co.
