Cyprian son of Quintilian

Occ. in cats. between Quintilian and Geoffrey, 'Cyprianus filius eius'. Always occ. as archdcn., without territ. title, but presum. of Colchester, from before Oct. 1115, to 1132/3 or later.


Occ. in cats. between Cyprian and Ailward, 'Gaufridus [Galfridus, Cat. II] archdiaconus'. Always occ. as archdcn., without territ. title, but presum. of Colchester, c. 1138.

M. Hugh of London I (fn. 2)

Occ. in cats. between Ailward and Laurence, 'Hugo de London'. Certainly occ. as can. 1183/4 (Gibbs no. 69; G.F.L. no. 403), but occ. perhaps earlier, [c. 1181 × Feb. 1187] (G.F.L. no. 405), and prob. can. when occ. 1181 (Hale p. 149). Possibly to be identified with:

(a) 'M. Hugh', who first occ. as can. [March 1157 × May 1162] (A/22/1658, A/38/1210, cal. in Rep. pp. 23b, 39b), (fn. 3)

(b) 'Hugh à London', who occ., not called can., but together with archdcns. of London dioc., [1152 × 59] (Eyton, Antiquities of Shropshire 11 206 n.).


Occ. in cats. between Hugh of London and John of London, 'Laurentius nepos Celestini pape iii'. Occ. as can. once only, c. 1192 (D.S.R. II). Celestine III was pope, el. March, crowned Apr. 1191; d. Jan. 1198.

M. John of London

Occ. in cats. between Laurence and Roger Niger, 'Johannes de London'. Occ., not called can., prob. [8 Jan. 1198 × Dec. 1201] (Innocent III, Cal. Letters no. 362). Occ. as can. [c. 1203 × March 1204] (Gibbs no. 138), and prob. to be identified with M. John, can. of St. Paul's, who occ. 11 Dec. 1205 (Reg. Innocent III, in Patrologia Latina, ed. J. Migne, ccxv cols. 740-1; see Innocent III, Selected Letters p. 42 n. 4). Prob. d. before May 1212 (Gibbs no. 139). (fn. 4) Grandson of Nicholas Crocemannus, preb. of Oxgate (see below p. 67).

M. Roger Niger

Occ. in cats. between John of London and Richard de Wendover, 'Roger Niger archidiaconus Colc.'. Does not occ. as can., but archdcn. of Colchester by Nov. 1218, to June 1229.

M. Richard de Wendover alias Physicus

Occ. in cats. between Roger Niger and John de Gatesdene, 'Ricardus phisicus'. First occ. as can. 14 Dec. 1237 (Cart. Colec. 1 97). Presum. transf. from this preb. to preb. of Nesden before Dec. 1238. Physician of pope Gregory IX (1227-41) (Chron. Maj. v 299).

John de Gatesdene

Occ. in cats. between Richard de Wendover and Fulk de Sanford, 'Johannes de Gatisdene [Gatesdene, Cat. II]'. Occ. as can. once only, n.d. (Hackett, Reg. Eleemosynariae p. i). Keeper of queen's wardrobe 1236-42 (Tout, Chapters 1 253-4). Still alive 12 Jan. 1257 (C.P.R. 1247-58 p. 537).

M. Fulk de Sanford

Occ. in cats. between John de Gatesdene and Robert de Esthall, 'Fulco de Sanford'. Does not occ. as can., but archdcn. of Middlesex from Apr. 1244 to c. Oct. 1246 or later; treas. by Apr. 1252, to July 1256.

M. Robert de Esthall

Occ. in cats. between Fulk de Sanford and Robert of Scarborough, 'Robertus de Esthall'. Does not occ. as can., but as archdcn. of Worcester, in St. Paul's deed 21 Aug. 1262 (Statutes p. 385). Prob. still alive 22 Dec. 1271 (Mon. Ang. 11 31), but had been succeeded as archdcn. of Worcester by 9 June 1275 (Reg. G. Giffard, ed. J. W. Willis Bund (Worcs. Hist. Soc., 1902) p. 74).

M. Robert of Scarborough (fn. 5)

Occ. in cats. between Robert de Esthall and John de Selvestone, 'Robertus de Scardeburc [Scardebough, Cat. II]'. Occ. as can. once only, 25 June 1278 (WD 1 fo. 107b). D. between 8 May 1290 and 10 March 1291 (York Minster Fasti 1 8-10).

M. John de Selvestone

Occ. in cats. between Robert of Scarborough and Philip de Barton, 'Johannes de Selveston [Selvestone, Cat. II]'. Occ. as official of bp. of London 1288 and 1291 (reg. J. Stokesley: Guildhall Libr., MS. 9531/11 fos. 145v-146r), and probably also in 1292 (cart. of Christ Church, Canterbury: B.M., Add. MS. 6159 fo. 143r). First occ. as can. 13 Feb. 1293 (Reg. Winchelsey 11 1270). Occ. this preb. c. 1294 (Liber F valor). (fn. 6) Last occ. 28 Feb. 1299 (WD 1 fo. 71b). D. 1299 (WD 16 fo. 19/22r). Commem. 13 Feb. (Statutes p. 135). So presum. d. Feb. 1300.
