Nigel Medicus

First preb. in cats., 'Nigellus medicus'. Does not occ. as can. Prob. to be identified with Nigel Medicus, who held lands in Wilts. and other counties in 1086 (Domesday Book 1 fo. 73a; cf. fos. 1b, 49a, 52a, 91a, 162b, 176a, 183a, 260b), and held church of king's manor of Calne (Wilts.) (ibid. fo. 64b). Perhaps a relative of Everard of Calne.

Everard of Calne

Occ. in cats. between Nigel Medicus and William of Calne, 'Ebrardus episcopus'. Does not occ. as can. Occ. as king's chapl., 1100-21 (Regesta 11 nos. 497-1245), and called Everard of Calne (Wilts.) [1112 or 1113] (ibid. no. 1015). Bp. of Norwich, el. March, cons. June 1121.

William of Calne

Occ. in cats. between Everard of Calne and Henry son of Robert de Sigillo, 'nepos eius Willelmus de Calme (sic)', i.e. nephew of Everard of Calne. Occ. in royal service [1100 × 29] and [1114 × 29] (Regesta 11 nos. 1612, 1625). First occ. as can. [c. 1108 × Apr. 1138] (Hale p. 124), (fn. 1) and [c. 1128 × 1138] (WD 4 fo. 52/56v, pd. in Rep. p. 67a-b). (fn. 2) Last certain occ. 1142/3 (WD 4 fo. 53/57r, pd. in Rep. p. 67b), but may occ. later, [1138 × c. 1154] (WD 4 fos. 43/47v-44/48r, cal. in Rep. p. 65b).³

Henry son of Robert de Sigillo (fn. 4)

Occ. in cats. between William of Calne and Alan the chapl., 'Henricus filius Roberti episcopi'. First occ. as can. before 4 May 1162 (Gibbs no. 245), (fn. 5) but prob. appd. before Sept. 1150 by his father, Robert de Sigillo, bp. of London (1141-50). Last occ. as can. c. 1192 (D.S.R. I), and [c. 1190 × Dec. 1196] (A/13/1267, cal. in Rep. p. 15a). (fn. 6)

Alan the chaplain (fn. 7)

Occ. in cats. between Henry son of Robert de Sigillo and Peter of Ste.-Mère-Eglise, 'Alanus capellanus'. Apparently became can. between 21 Apr. and 30 Dec. 1196, because occ. both as chapl. and not can. (Gibbs nos. 103, 183, 186), and as chapl. and can. (Richardson, William of Ely p. 79; Gibbs no. 285), during this period. (fn. 8) Last occ. [March 1204 × Feb. 1215] (Gibbs no. 168). Commem. 21 Apr. (Obits. I fo. iiv, II fo. 108r, III fo. 95r, IV pp. 65, 81).

Peter of Ste.-Mère-Eglise (fn. 9)

Occ. in cats. between Alan the chapl. and William the Angevin, 'Petrus thesaurarius'. Presum. to be identified with Peter of Ste.-Mère-Eglise, treas. from before May 1212, to d. in Apr. 1227 or Apr. 1228, who presum. transf. to this preb. from preb. of Islington, and res. this preb. to transf. to preb. of Cantlers before July 1214.

William the Angevin

Occ. in cats. between Peter of Ste.-Mère-Eglise and Philip de Fauconberg, 'Willelmus Andegavens'. First occ. as can. 9 July 1214 (Paris, Bibl. Nationale, MS. Lat. 10077 p. 19 no. 10). Last occ. between Oct. 1221 and Oct. 1222 (Westminster, D. & C., Ch. 2185). D. as can. before March 1226 (Gibbs no. 119). (fn. 10) Commem. 27 Apr. (Obit. I fo. iiv), 28 Apr. (Obits. II fo. 108r, III fo. 95v, IV pp. 65, 83). If d. as preb., presum. d. Apr. 1222 (cf. below).

Philip de Fauconberg

Occ. in cats. between William the Angevin and Thomas de Fauconberg, 'Philippus de Fauc'berg [Faukeberge, Cat. II]'. Occ., not called can. 8 Jan. 1223 (A/38/1219). First occ. as can. 1 March 1223 (A/29/344). Presum. transf. to preb. of Caddington Major between June 1225 and Oct. 1228.

Thomas de Fauconberg

Occ. in cats. between Philip de Fauconberg and Richard Talbot, 'Thomas archidiaconus Essex'. Presum. succeeded Philip de Fauconberg in this preb. between June 1225 and Oct. 1228. Does not occ. as can., but archdcn. of Essex from before Oct. 1228, to Nov. 1243 or later.

M. Richard Talbot

Occ. in cats. between Thomas de Fauconberg and Walter Chausehose, 'Ricardus Talebut [Thalebot, Cat. II]'. Although does not occ. as can., presum. transf. to preb. of Finsbury or to an unident. preb. before May 1253. Treas. before Aug. 1257. Nephew of Fulk Basset, bp. of London (1244-59) (Gerv. Cant. (cont.) 11 216).

M. Walter Chausehose

Occ. in cats. between Richard Talbot and Philip de Eya, 'Walterus Chausehuse [Chaucehus', Cat. II]'. Occ. as official of bp. of London 7 May 1253 (cart. of Stoke by Clare: B.M., Cotton MS. App. xxi fo. 59r). Occ. as can. 14 May 1253 (B.M., Harley MS. 6956 fo. 150v, from an original deed formerly in St. Paul's pyx 'H'), 31 July 1256 (St. Paul's almoner's cart.: Cambridge, St, John's College, MS.
