Churches of Great and Little Driffield (E.R.) in kg.'s manor of [Great and Little] Driffield in 1086 (Yorks. DB fo. 299v). Gr. to cath. by Henry I (EYC I nos. 426-9, not in Regesta II). Land (6 car. 1 bov.) in Haxby (N.R.) held by cath. in 1086 (Yorks. DB fos. 303, 381).

In c. 1295 preb. consisted of churches of Great and Little Driffield, with land in Great Driffield and a manor-house in Little Driffield, half the vill of Haxby, (fn. 153) and a tenant in Heslington (fn. 154) (Extents pp. 27-8).

Prebendaries

Hugh Murdac

Referred to in 1227 as having been can., holding land in Haxby temp. Bertram de Bulmer (d. 1166) and Nicholas de Trailli can. (EYC II no. 785). As Nicholas held preb. Strensall (list 42), the only other York preb. with an interest in Haxby, Hugh Murdac must have held this preb. First occ. as can. 1150 × 53 (EYC I no. 145, cal. EEA V no. 132) and 1152 × 53 (EYC III no. 1471). Occ. several times. Last occ. as can. 1198, excomm. by dean (Houedene IV 53). Nephew of abp. Henry Murdac, appd. archdcn. of Cleveland by cans. 1201, but opposed by abp. who excomm. him; occ. as archdcn. Apr. 1201 (list 10). Prob. to be identified with kg.'s clerk who occ. 1178 (EYC IX no. 91), 1179 (Houedene II 191, as royal justice) and 1184 (BL Harley MS 6956 fo. 84r).

Peter

Archdcn. of Lincoln, from c. 1175 to 1217 or 1218 (1 Fasti III 25). Half-brother of abp. Geoffrey who unsuccessfully tried to appt. him in 1194 as dean and then as archdcn. of York (Houedene III 273; lists 3, 9). Occ. as this preb. c. 1200 × 19 (YMF I no. 20). Papal judges appd. to enquire into his probity 6 May 1217 (CPL I 47 = Reg. Hon. III no. 565). Prob. d. or removed from archdcnry. of Lincoln 1217 or 1218.

M. Walter de Wisbech

Archdcn. of E.R. and preb. Fenton from before Apr. 1219 (lists 11, 25). Occ. as this preb. 10 Apr. 1226 (YMF I no. 21) and 9 Feb. 1227 (Yorks. Fines 1218-31 p. 108). D. before 30 Oct. 1227 (Pat. Rolls 1225-32 p. 168).

Boniface of Cocconato (fn. 155)

His proctor collected 10m. on his behalf as 'preb. of churches of T. and D[?riffield].' 1279 × 85 (Reg. Wickwane p. 316 n.). D. in Lombardy before 2 June 1284 (CPL I 473 = Reg. Martin IV no. 560; cf. Reg. Wickwane p. 316). Prob. related to Uberto of Cocconato, cardinal-dcn. of S. Eustachio 1261-76 (cf. Paravicini Bagliani, Testamenti p. 26, of 29 Apr. 1277). Identification of this preb. depends on succession down to M. John of Caen (below).

Berard of Naples

Papal chamberlain, papal prov. of preb. in succession to Boniface of Cocconato 12 June 1284 (CPL I 473 = Reg. Martin IV no. 560). Papal nuncio's mandate to abp. to admit Berard or his proctor to preb. 31 July 1284 (Reg. Wickwane pp. 316-17). Occ. as can. at el. of abp. Romeyn in Rome, conf. 17 Feb. 1286 (Reg. Hon. IV no. 278, cal. CPL I 483). Also preb. of Salisbury and treas. of Tours (1 Fasti IV 65; CPL I 473). Prob. never gained possession of preb.: papal letter 22 Apr. 1289 requested kg. to obtain recovery of preb. from M. John of Caen in favour of Berard (PRO SC7/30/4, printed in Foedera, Conventiones ..., ed. T. Rymer (2nd edn., 20 vols.: 1727-35) I (2) 707).

M. John of Caen (fn. 156)

Apostolic notary, first occ. in connection with York 15 Oct. 1268 (Reg. Giffard p. 142). Royal clerk 1276-1310 (Cheney, Notaries Public, as below n. 156). First occ. as can. 1288 (Foedera I (2) 698). Claimed this preb. against Berard of Naples on strength of prov. by pope John XXI (Sept. 1276 -May 1277) and royal patronage; evidently in possession of preb.; his surrender of the fruits ordered by pope 22 Apr. 1289 (ibid. p. 707). Occ. as this preb. 11 Dec. 1295 (CPR 1292-1301 p. 215). Scrutator at el. of abp. Corbridge, before 9 March 1300 (CPL I 586 = Reg. Bon. VIII no. 3475), and at el. after d. of Corbridge on 22 Sept. 1304 (CPL II 8). Had houses in Goodramgate, York, 22 July 1298 (Chs. Vicars Choral no. 163) and in Minster Close 21 Aug. 1298 (CPR 1292-1301 p. 358). Also dean of Stafford from 28 Oct. 1294 (ibid. p. 106); can. of Wells, his preb. vacant 9 Apr. 1310 (2 Fasti VIII 81). Exch. this preb. with William Melton for preb. in church of Darlington before 23 March 1310 (Reg. Greenfield IV 102, 318).
