Footnotes

  • 1. His name is English, as also that of his son, Leofric.
  • 2. But LL's notice of his d., 6 March 1104, states that it occurred in the 48th year of his cons., which would give a cons. date, if Pentecost is right, of 26 May 1056. See Wendy Davies, 'The consecration of bishops of Llandaff in the 10th and 11th centuries', BBCS xxvi (1974-6) 53-73, at pp. 62, 64-6, 71, 72, 73, concluding, p. 69, that he was cons. between 1055 and 1060, and prob. 1056.
  • 3. Canterbury Chartae Antiquae C. 117 m. 2d also states that he d. in the 48th year of his cons. (see previous note). Like LL p. 280 it gives a vacancy after his d. of 4 years 5 months and 7 days: correctly, this should be 3 years 5 months and 5 (or 6) days. See W. Davies, 'The consecration' (as above, n. 19).
