PREBENDARIES OF LLANDAFF
Prebends are listed in two 13th-cent. taxation lists: that of 1254 gives the four dignities and names nine prebendaries, but not their prebends; (fn. 1) that of 1291, in a text recently published, (fn. 2) lists the four dignities, five named prebendaries and the titles of their prebends, one prebendary without the title of his prebend, and probably one prebend without the name of the holder. The Book of Llandaff contains a 14th-cent. history of the bps., in French, which states that bp. Henry instituted fourteen prebends: this, as Professor Crouch has pointed out, was the number of prebends that existed when the history was composed. (fn. 3) On this subject, see D. Crouch, in Llandaff Acta pp. xxxi-xxxii.
The named prebends whose holders are listed below (lists 14-18) are those for which there is conclusive identification in the documents before 1300. (fn. 4) Those canons whose prebends cannot be identified are listed separately (list 19).
