  • 2. He was referred to by Abp. Parker 15 Nov. 1573 as 'cocking abroad, with his four several prebends (as they say) in new-erected churches, both against statute and his oath' (Correspondence of Matthew Parker, ed. J. Bruce and T.T. Perowne (Cambridge, 1853) p. 450).
  • 3. He may be the 'Smithe' who was depriv. by Bp. Scambler for not keeping residence according to the cathedral foundation, and whose case was pending in the court of Arches 30 Oct. 1580 (A.P.C. 1580-1 pp. 249-50; Acts of the Privy Council 1581-2 p. 89). If so, he resumed possession of his prebend.
