451 THOMAS CAPLE.
Writ wanting; inq. 20 March, 4 Hen. VII.
By deed dated at Sholl, 16 Sept., 4 Hen. VII, the said Thomas Caple, of Hew Caple, esq., gave the under-mentioned manor of Sholl to John Chippenham, esq., John Mountfort, chaplain, now deceased, and James Mey, to his own use for life, with remainder to William Caple, his grandson, and Sybil his wife, daughter of Thomas Mey, esq., and the heirs of their bodies, with remainder to his own right heirs.
He died at 3.0 p.m., Thursday before the feast of the Purification last, seised of the manor of Hew Caple, and lands in Alkerugge and Shirburne in fee. The said William Caple, aged 11 on the feast of All Hallows last, is his cousin and heir, viz. son and heir of George his son and heir.
HEREF. Manor and advowson of Hew Caple, worth 100s., held of Thomas, Bishop of Hereford, as of the honor of Rosse, by service of one knight’s fee.
A moiety of a messuage and of four virgates of land in Alkerugge, worth 6s. 8d., held of the said Bishop, by service of 1/3 of a knight’s fee.
Manor of Sholl, with lands, &c., in Westhuyde, Monkehuyde, Litell, and Yarkhull, worth 4 marks, held of the King, as of the honor of Clifford, parcel of the earldom of March, in socage, viz. by a yearly rent of 10s.
A messuage and dovecot, with lands, &c., thereto belonging, in the hamlet of Shirburne, in the parish of Collewell, worth 10s., held of the said Bishop, as of the manor of Collewall, in socage, viz. by a certain rent for all service.

452 PHILIP SKIDMORE.
Writ 19 Jan., inq. 3 Feb., 4 Hen. VII.
One John Barre, knt., William Andrewe, clk., and John Cantreselly, being seised of two parts of the under-mentioned manor, of the under-mentioned advowson, and of the reversion of the third part of the said manor expectant on the death of Margaret Popham, in fee, gave the same to the said Philip and Joan his wife, by the names of Philip Skydmore, and Wenllyan his wife, and their issue, with remainder to his right heirs; the royal licence, as appears by letters patent of King Henry VI, having been first obtained. The said Margaret attorned to the said Philip and Wenllian, and afterwards died, whereby the said Philip and Wenllian became seised of the whole manor in fee tail. They had issue a daughter Anne, to whom on the death of the said Philip, who survived the said Wenllian, the said manor descended as their daughter and heir, per formam doni.
He died 26 Dec. last. The said Anne, who married one John Skydmore, is his daughter and heir by the said Wenllian, and is aged 30 and more.
BUCKS. Manor of Burnham called ‘Hundercombe,’ worth 50s., together with the advowson of the church of Bekennesfeld, belonging to the said manor, held of the King in chief, by service of 1/2 of a knight’s fee.

Writ 23 Jan., inq. Wednesday after St. Valentine the Martyr, 4 Hen. VII.
One John Barre, knt., being seised of the under-mentioned moieties of manors in fee, gave the said moieties, by the description of those manors in Great Maplested, &c., whereof he, Senaere De la Bere, and William Andrewe, vicar of Holm Lacy, were lately enfeoffed by the said Philip, to the said Philip and Joan his wife, by the names of Philip Skydmore, esq., son and heir of George Skydmore, esq., and Wenllyan his wife, with remainder to the heirs of their bodies, with remainder to the right heirs of Philip.

Writ of Mandamus 11 March, inq. 4 July, 4 Hen. VII.
By deed dated 20 Jan., 12 Edw. IV, Ellen Dekyn gave the under-mentioned 10 messuages and virgate of land in Melton, late belonging to William Roskyn, her late husband, whereof she was solely seised in her demesne as of fee, to one John Dalby, chaplain, and William Lane, who by deed dated 2 May, 13 Edw. IV, gave the same to the said Jasper Roskyn, esq., and Katharine his wife, and his heirs.
By deed dated at Melton, 12 Sept., 16 Edw. IV, the said Jasper gave another messuage and a virgate of land in Melton, whereof he was seised in fee, to William Sutton, Master of Burton St. Lazars of Jerusalem in England, knt., Bartholomew Vyllers, John Goldsmyth, and the said Katharine, to the use of the said Katharine for the term of her life.
By deed dated at Sutton, Tuesday in Easter week, 1 Ric. III, he gave the under-mentioned manor of Sutton to Master William Wode, Robert Bryan, and Master Thomas Wode, clks., William Barley, esq., Gilbert Walter, and William Lane, to the use of the said Katharine for the term of her life, with remainder to his right heirs.
He died 7 April, 1 Hen. VII, seised of a third part of the manor of Medburn in fee. Anne Roskyn, aged 17 and more, Katharine Roskyn, aged 13 and more, Margaret Roskyn, aged 5 and more, and Elizabeth Roskyn, aged 3 and more, are his daughters and heirs.
LEIC. Ten messuages and a virgate of land in Melton Mowbray, worth 40s., held of Elizabeth, Duchess of Norfolk, as of the manor of Melton, by knight-service.

By deed dated at Brampton 6 Feb., 20 Edw. IV, he demised 157a. land, 3 marshes called ‘Runham Holme,’ ‘Thyrklond’, and ‘Burge Marsh,’ and the moiety of two meadows, called ‘West Medowe’ and ‘Est Medowe’ in Runham, Thirkeby, Heryngby, and Rakheith, parcels of the manor of Runham, to Robert Clere, his eldest son, Elizabeth Brampton, who survives, then single, but who afterwards intermarried with the said Robert, Robert Brampton, esq., Thomas Brampton, Thomas Bettys, and Thomas Cryne, to hold from Michaelmas then last for the term of 80 years next to come, at a rent of 13s. 4d.
He died 6th Nov. last, seised of the said manor of Runham in fee, subject to the above lease, and seised in fee of the under-mentioned land in Stokesby. Edmund Clere, aged 6 and more, is his cousin and heir, viz. son of the said Robert Clere, his son, by the said Elizabeth.
NORF. Manor of Runham, worth 5 marks, held of the King in socage, by service of 200 great pears and 2 measures of wine yearly.

Writ wanting; inq. 12 Feb., 4 Hen. VII.
She held at her death the under-mentioned manors and advowson in dower, as of the inheritance of John Writell, who is under age and in the King’s custody, son and heir of the said John Writell, esq., named in the writ. The said manors and advowson were assigned to her, after the death of the said John Writell, esq., who held of the King in chief, and died seised thereof in fee, by John Tey, esq., late escheator, acting under a writ de Dote assignanda.
She died 26 Dec. last. The said John Writell, aged 2 and more, is her son and heir.
Note.—This inquisition is entered in an old MS. list, as taken on the death of Ann, late the wife of John Reynsforth, on the authority, presumably, of the writ now lost.

IV, he enfeoffed Robert Horne and Bernard Delamare, esqs., and William Aspull of all his manors and lands in Becot, Ashbury, Churchspene alias Spene, Byenham Valence, and Endebourne; and the said feoffees by deed dated the last day but one of January, 19 Edw. IV, enfeoffed him, and Margaret then his wife, who survives, and the heirs of their bodies thereof, with remainder to his right heirs. He died without having had issue by the said Margaret, who is now solely seised of the premises, as tenant in tail after possibility of issue extinct.

By fine levied on the morrow of All Souls, 4 Edw. IV, between John Pyers, clk., John Mompesson, esq., and John Mervyn, esq., querents, and Margaret Hungerford, widow, late the wife of Robert Hungerford, knt., Thomas Hungerford, knt., and Anne his wife, and Thomas Burgh, knt., and the said Margaret his wife, deforciants, the under-mentioned manors and lands, with the exception of the advowsons of the churches of the manors of Alre, and Newtonsayntloo, and the advowson of the chantry of Alre, were given, with warranty against the heirs of the said Margaret Hungerford, and the Abbot of Westminster, to the said Thomas Burgh and Margaret his wife, for the term of their lives, with remainder after their decease, to Roger Tocotes, knt., John Chayny, John Sydenham, John Newburgh, and Gregory Westby, and the heirs of the said Gregory.
She died the Wednesday after St. Nicholas last, leaving Thomas her husband surviving. Edward Burgh, knt., aged 30 and more, is her next heir.

Thomas Tremayle, serjeant-at-law, John Lyte, Thomas Larder, and William Larder, gave the under-mentioned manor and lands to the said Katharine, for the term of her life, with remainder to Hugh Larder, and Alice his wife, cousin of the said Katharine, and the heirs of their bodies, with remainder in default to the right heirs of the said Alice.

Writ 2 Nov., inq. 4 July, 5 Hen. VII.
By deed dated 12 Sept., 11 Edw. IV, Richard Chokke, knt., John Fitzjames the elder, John Fitzjames the younger, and John Porter, gave an annuity of 40l. to John Crokker, knt., out of the under-mentioned manor, and by deed dated 7 June, 22 Edw. IV, an annuity of 26s. 8d. to John Michell, auditor. By writing dated 5 June, 2 Ric. III, John Fitzjames the younger, the survivor, released the said manor to the said Thomas Seyntmaure, knt., who had previously disseised him of it, to hold to the said Thomas, his heirs and assigns.
The said Sir Thomas being accordingly seised of the said manor in fee, by four separate deeds gave annuities thereout to the under steward, steward, bailiff, and parker of the manor, and lastly by deed dated 8 Feb., 1 Hen. VII, enfeoffed Richard Eggecombe, knt., John Tremayn, Roger Holland, Fulk Prideaux, Peter Eggecombe, and Christopher Tremayn thereof, on trust to execute certain agreements made between him and the said Richard Eggecombe, knt. The said Richard has died, but the said John Tremayn and the others survive.
He died 26 Oct., 5 Hen. VII. William Seyntmaur, aged 20 and more, is his cousin and heir, viz. son of John his son.
DEVON. Manor of North Molton, worth 4l. 14s. 2d., held of the King in chief, by service of finding an armed man with a horse to serve forty days in the King’s army, at his own charges.

By deed dated 12 July, 1 Edw. IV, William Gaynesford and John Catesby demised the under-mentioned manors of Chakenden, Stoke Marmyon, and Standelff, together with a carucate and 200a. of land, 20a. of meadow, 100a. pasture, and 40a. wood in Chakenden, Gatehampton, and Standelff, to him, and Katharine, then his wife, who survives, and the heirs male of their bodies, with remainder in default to his right heirs; and by the same deed demised the under-mentioned manor of Gatehampton to him, his heirs and assigns.
He, together with William Bekyngham, Peter Marmyon, and Richard Bedford demised the under-mentioned manor of Fiffylde to Thomas Dalamare, knt., and others (as in No. 466).
He died 7 June last, seised of the under-mentioned manor of Hedyngdon, and the bailiwick of the forest of Shottore and Stowod, in fee. His heir as in No. 465.

On the same day Robert Thorp, chaplain, was instituted and inducted into the rectory of the church of Hoton beside Penreth; Edmund Hoton, now aged 60 and more, was godfather to one Edmund son of Thomas Middylton in the church of St. Mary, Carlisle; one John Norman, servant to Thomas Wodhall, was unluckily taken prisoner by the Scots and carried off into Scotland, &c. His lands of inheritance were in the King’s custody.

King Edward IV gave the whole county of Cumberland, with knight-fees, advowsons of churches, and all other its profits and emoluments, to Richard, late Duke of Gloucester, his brother, who by virtue of the said gift, and by reason of the imbecility of the said Robert Hotton, son and heir of John Hotton of the Forest, having taken possession of the manor of Hotton, gave it to John Musgrave, esq., who held it during the said Duke’s life, and up to the present time, by what right the jurors know not.
He died 18 July, 2 Ric. III, seised of the under-mentioned manor and lands in fee. Lancelett Hotton, aged 19 and more, is his cousin and heir, viz. son of Thomas Hoton his brother.

By deed dated 20 Jan., 35 Hen. VI, Henry Quarell and Hugh Shelwik demised the under-mentioned manors and lands to John Barre, knt., and Joan his wife, with remainders over (as in No. 7): and the said John and Joan received the King’s pardon for thus acquiring the premises, by letters patent, 27 Jan., 11 Edw. IV. On the death of the said Joan, who survived the said John, the said Thomas Bourgchier and Isabel his wife, Countess of Devon, daughter and heiress of the said John Barre, by his first wife Idonia, entered into and were seised of the said manors and lands in fee tail, in her right, by virtue of the above remainder; and by letters patent, 12 Dec., 1 Hen. VII, they obtained the King’s pardon for such entry.
She had issue by the said Thomas a daughter, Isabel, who predeceased her. She died 1 March, 4 Hen. One John Broughton, and John Estwyk gave the under-mentioned messuages to one John de Meperteshale, and Katharine his wife, in tail. They had issue Joan their daughter and heir, who married one John Botiller, and had issue by him John Botiller, her son and heir. On the death of the said John Botiller, the son, partition was made between his daughters and heirs, viz., Florence Asshfeld, widow, and the said Joan Stanford, of the lands whereof he was seised in fee, fee tail, or for life, after the death of Elizabeth, his wife, as tenant by the curtesy. The said messuages were then allotted to the said John Stanford, and Joan his wife, as her purparty of the inheritance. He survived the said Joan, by whom he had issue a son John Stanford, and is seised of the premises for life as tenant by the curtesy.
She died 22 July, 4 Hen. VII. Thomas Leventhorp aged 24 and more, her son by John Leventhorpe the younger, is her next heir.

IV, Robert Barnhill, ‘gentilman,’ gave the under-mentioned manor of Speton, which he had of their gift and feoffment, to John Portyngton, knt., and Alice his wife, and the heirs of the said John, begotten on the said Alice, with remainder in default to the said Robert Portyngton, brother of the said John in tail, with remainder to the right heirs of the said John. The said Robert Portyngton was accordingly entitled, after the decease of the said John and Alice without issue, to the said manor, but one Richard Portyngton intruded thereon, and was and is still seised thereof by intrusion. The right to the said manor descended on the death of the said Robert to John Portyngton his cousin and heir, viz. son of Thomas his son.
The said Robert Portyngton, and Elizabeth his wife, were seised in fee, in her right, of the under-mentioned manor of Barnby, and lands and rent in Barnby, Goldale, and Thirneson, and had issue between them the said Thomas Portyngton, who had issue the said John. And the said Elizabeth died, and the said Robert survived her, and was seised in his demesne as of frank tenement of the said manor, lands, and rent, as tenant by the curtesy. On his death the premises descended to the said John, son of Thomas, Portyngton, as cousin and heir of the said Elizabeth.
He died 26 June, 3 Hen. VII. The said John Portyngton, aged 9 and more, his cousin and heir, was married by the said Robert his grandfather in his life-time to Mary, daughter of John Copley, and espousals still endure and continue between them.

One Thomas de Askham, formerly rector of Skalton, gave the under-mentioned manor of Brafferton, whereof he was seised in fee, to William Delaryver and Elizabeth his wife, and the heirs of their bodies, with remainder in default to the right heirs of William. After the death of the said William and Elizabeth the said manor descended to the said Marmaduke, as their cousin and heir, viz. son of Thomas, son of Marmaduke, their son.
Thomas de Britteby, chaplain, gave the under-mentioned manors of Brandesby and Steresby to Marmaduke Delaryver and Margaret his wife, and the heirs of their bodies, with remainder to the right heirs of John Delaryver of Brandesby. On the death of the said Marmaduke and Margaret the said manors descended to the said Marmaduke, as their cousin and heir, viz. son of Thomas their son.
He died 10 March, 1 Richard III, when the said manors descended to one Thomas Delaryver, as his son and heir; but one Thomas Maulyverer, knt., and Walleron Morton, under the pretext of a deed of feoffment executed as they alleged about two and a half years before his death by the said Marmaduke to them and their heirs to the use of him and his heirs, made that is to say in the month of January, 21 Edw. IV, intruded themselves on the said manors; for the said feoffment, as they asserted, was to the intent that, after his decease, they should have the direction of the said manors, and keep up all buildings, &c., out of the profits thereof, and should find the said Thomas the heir from the time of the said pretended feoffment, at which date he was not more than four and a half years old, till he had reached full age, i.e. twenty-one, in requisites. By colour of the said feoffment the said Thomas Maulyverer took the issues and profits of the manors of Brandesby and Steresby, amounting to 20 marks a year and more clear, for four and a half years following the decease of the said Marmaduke, and the said Walleron has taken the issues and profits of the manor of Brafferton, amounting to 16l. and more clear yearly, for five years.
The said Thomas, son and heir of Marmaduke, is aged eleven and more.
