| Writ to the escheator to take the proof of age of John, son of William de Helyng, kinsman and heir of Joan, late the wife of John de Helyng, who held of the heir of John de Bello Monte, a minor in the king’s wardship, by knight’s service, having previously warned Saier de Rocheford, in whose custody the lands of his inheritance are by the king’s commission. 13 May, 33 Edward III. | |

Osbert Richard of Great Cotes, aged 50 years and more, says that the said John, son of William de Helyng, was 21 years of age and more on 14 May, 33 Edward III, having been born at Benyngton and baptized in the church there on 14 May, 11 Edward III; and this he knows because John de Leek, formerly parson of the church of Benyngton, godfather of the said John, caused the year and day of his birth to be enrolled in the kalendar of the greater missal of Benyngton and in the kalendar of the red portas (portiforii) of Helyng.
Peter, son of Gilbert of Great Cotes, aged 38 years and more, William, son of John Nicoll, of the same, aged 34 years and more, and Peter de Fountenay of Little Cotes, aged 43 years and more, agree and say that they have seen with their own eyes the date and place of birth of the said John in writing. John, son of Sibyl de Swalowe, aged 42 years and more, agrees and says that at Easter before the birth of the said John he took service (conductus fuit) with William, father of the said John, in the office of butler and spencer (pincerne et dispensarii), and served him for 3 1/2 years. Roger atte Chapell of Layceby, aged 44 years and more, and John, son of Robert of Layceby, aged 40 years and more, agree and say that on the feast of St. Ambrose before the birth of the said John, Roger, son of the aforesaid Roger atte Chapell, married Margery, daughter of the aforesaid John son of Robert. Robert de Toynton, aged 42 years and more, and William, son of John son of Geoffrey of Layceby, aged 38 years, agree and say that at the feast of SS. Peter and Paul after the birth of the said John they began to build their ship called la Maudelayn and finished her about the feast of St. Matthew following, and at the feast of St. Denis following launched (exposuerunt aque) her on the Humber at the port of Grymesby. Richard Dodde of Bradele, aged 44 years and more, agrees and says that at the feast of St. Peter’s Chair before the birth of the said John, Egletina his mother died at Bradele and was buried there. William Daulyn of Fenby, aged 50 years and more, Richard de la Launde of the same, aged 40 years and more, agree and say that the said William, on Monday after St. Gregory before the birth of the said John, had a son William born and baptized at Fenby; and the said Richard, on the day of the Nativity of St. John the Baptist after the birth of the said John, had a daughter Katherine born and baptized at Fenby. |

Reynold de Bokkyngg, aged 50 years, says that the said Thomas was 21 years of age on the feast of the Exaltation of the Holy Cross last, and this he knows because the said Thomas was born at Codham at the house of John de Coggeshale, knight, in the parish of Wetheresfeld, and was baptized in the church of that place, and a note of his birth was made at the time in the missal of the said John de Coggeshale, in the eleventh year of the present king, which note the same John showed him.
John de Naylingherst, aged 44 years, agrees and says that he married Alice, daughter of John de Liston, about Michaelmas in the king’s eleventh year, and heard then that John Baynard had a son Thomas born about the feast of the Exaltation of the Holy Cross last before. Richard Rowe, aged 46 years, agrees and says that he had a son John born at Branketre of one Agnes Godard on the feast of St. Matthew in the eleventh year, who was 21 years old on the feast of St. Matthew last, and when the said John was born it was commonly said in the country that the said Thomas was born about the feast of the Exaltation of Holy Cross last before. Thomas Hulot, aged 60 years, agrees and says that his own father, John Hulot, died about the feast of the Assumption in the eleventh year and the said Thomas was born on the feast of the Exaltation of the Holy Cross following. Robert le Swon, aged 70 years, agrees and says that on the feast of the Purification after the birth of the said Thomas he went on pilgrimage to Santiago (Sanctum Jacobum). Roger Prat, aged 54 years, agrees and says that when the said Thomas was born he was living with John Baynard the father and left his service at Michaelmas after. Ralph Eckenach, aged 64 years, agrees and says that he has heard Thomas Hugh, godfather of the said Thomas, swear on the Book that the same Thomas was 21 years old on the feast of the Exaltation of the Cross. Richard Peyntour, aged 42 years, agrees and says that he knows by the common testimony of trustworthy persons. William Naylingherst, aged 50 years, agrees and says that he built a new house called the hall (aulam) at Branketre in the summer before the birth of the said Thomas. John atte Fen, aged 62 years, agrees and says that Robert atte Fen, his father, went the way of all flesh about the feast of All Saints after the birth of the said Thomas. John Kentyssh, aged 55 years, agrees and says that he knows by the common report of the country. John Glasene, aged 62 years, agrees and says that he had a daughter named Agnes married to one Robert Aldholt about the feast of St. Margaret in the same eleventh year and he heard that the said Thomas was born at Codham about the feast of the Exaltation of the Holy Cross next after. |

John atte Welle, aged 48 years and more, says that the said John was 21 years of age and more on the feast of the Nativity of St. John the Baptist last, and that he was born at Shenle and baptized in the church there, and that he was his godfather.
Robert Betrice, aged 50 years, agrees and says that at the feast of St. Peter’s Chains after the birth of the said heir he acquired a messuage in Shenle, and by the date of the charter of feoffment he knows that the said John is of full age. Hugh Curteis, aged 36 years, agrees and says that at Christmas after the birth of the said John his own father William died at Shenle, and his death is entered in the missal of the church there. Thomas Lord, aged 44 years, agrees and says that he has a son named John born at the feast of the Assumption after the birth of the said heir. Richard Peyte, aged 44 years and more, agrees and says that Margaret his wife was in the service of the said John’s mother at the time of his birth. John Payn, aged 50 years, agrees and says that at the time of the said John’s birth he was bailiff of Thomas fitz Eustace, his father. Henry Martyn, aged 60 years, agrees and says that he was auditor of the accounts of John Payn abovesaid. Thomas Deyvill, aged 48 years and more, agrees and says that he married Agnes his daughter to John atte Brook and gave them by charter 24a. land in Shenle at the feast of St. Margaret after the birth of the said heir, and by the date of the charter he shews that the latter is of age. Robert Cook, aged 60 years and more, and Walter Smyth, aged 62 years, agree and say that they were witnesses named in the above-mentioned charter. Robert Curteis, aged 64 years, and John Malyn, aged 60 years, agree and say that at the feast of the Purification after the birth of the said heir they started on their way to the Holy Land. The escheator warned Isabel, late the wife of Robert Parvyng, by John West and William Curteis; she did not come, nor was any other present in her name. |

John Baudewyn, aged 50 years and more, says that the said George was 33 years old and more on the feast of the Nativity of St. John the Baptist last, having been born at Melereth, co. Cambridge, and baptized in the church there, and this he knows because the name of the said heir and the day of his birth were entered in the missal of the aforesaid church, because he was the firstborn son of his father.
John Gentyng, aged 50 years, agrees and says that he has a son John born at Michaelmas after the birth of the said heir. Roger Basse, aged 46 years, agrees and says that he was bailiff of John de Brumpton, the father, at Melereth, wherefore he accounted at Michaelmas after the birth of the said heir, and by the date of the acquittance made to him by the said father he shews that the said heir is of age. Robert Huwet, aged 50 years, agrees and says that he was auditor of the account of the aforesaid Roger at the time. William Gerald, aged 60 years, agrees and says that on the feast of St. Martin after the birth of the said heir one William Smyth was killed at Royston, by reason whereof, he, William Gerald, was there before the coroner. Hugh Scotard, aged 44 years, agrees and says that one Richard de Eltham was indicted for the death of the aforesaid William and upon this was taken and brought to the castle of Cambridge, where he died in prison before the Christmas next after the birth of the said George. Henry Fisshere, aged 43 years, agrees and says that Joan his wife was in the service of the said George’s mother at the time of his birth. John Osebern, aged 60 years, agrees and says that John, the father of George, received from him 10a. land in the fields of Melereth for life by indenture made between them, by the date of which he remembers that the said heir is of full age. John Benyngworth, aged 64 years, and Richard Molt, aged 56 years, agree and say that they were witnesses named in the above-mentioned indenture. William Wright, aged 48 years, and William Molt, aged 50 years and more, agree and say that they set out for Santiago together at the feast of the Purification after the birth of the said George. The escheator warned Walter de Mauny by John Russel and William Clerk, but he was not present nor any other in his name. |

Richard Person, aged 60 years, says that the said William was 22 years of age on Sunday the feast of the Epiphany last, having been born at Estbury and baptized in the church of Chepynglambourne on Monday the feast of the Epiphany, 10 Edward III; and this he is sure of (bene constat sibi) because Elizabeth, mother of the said William, died two years and a half later, and he, Richard, was one of the executors of her testament.
John de Sharpenham, aged 62 years and more, agrees and says that on the same feast of the Epiphany, 10 Edward III, his daughter Edith was married to Walter Shephurd of Haddele. Roger de Cobyndon, aged 50 years and more, agrees and says that he married Alice Frere on Thursday after St. Hilary after the birth of the said William. Henry Cobyndon, aged 46 years and more, agrees and says that he had a son John born and baptized on the same day as the heir. John atte Brigge, aged 40 years and more, agrees and says that he was present in church, when William was baptized, to hear his mass with John Holte. Robert de Ryvers, aged 42 years and more, agrees and says that at the time of the birth he was dwelling with Roger de Ryvers his uncle. Geoffrey atte Strete, Henry Mundy, Robert Syward, Walter Seymore, Robert de Holte and John Giffard agree. |

John Noreis, aged 60 years and more, says that the said John son of Ralph is of full age, viz. 21 years and more. He was born on 16 June, 12 Edward III, at Raurygge, co. Devon, and baptized in St. Mary’s Church, Uphotery. He, John Noreis, was present at the baptism and John Pervyle of the same county was godfather, and asked John David, rector of the church, to write in the missal of Uphotery the day and year of the birth, and the writing is there yet.
William Uphey, aged 58 years and more, agrees and says that he was with Ralph Horsey, the father, and was present at the baptism. William atte Hille, aged 40 years, Nicholas Southlegh, aged 60 years, and Thomas Crukern, aged 40 years, agree and say that at Easter in the abovesaid year before the birth of the said heir Ralph Horsy, the father, sold them a hundred quarters of oats for a sum of money paid down and gave them a bond for the said corn, and by the date of this bond they know the age of the heir. Robert Bitlesgate, aged 50 years, agrees and says that on Sunday before Whitsuntide in the same twelfth year he married Joan, daughter of Simon Donne, and the said heir was born on 16 June following. William Hore, aged 50 years, John Mattesford, aged 40 years, Richard Somaister, aged 42 years, and Robert Pomeray aged 60 years, agree and say that one John Rous brought against them in the King’s Bench a writ of trespass returnable on the quinzaine of St. Martin, 12 Edward III, and on Easter Sunday before the birth of the said heir the same John Rous remitted to them all actions, and so by the date of the quitclaim the age of the heir is manifest. Thomas atte Beare, aged 40 years, and Nicholas Daumarle, aged 38 years, agree and say that on the feast of Whitsunday, 12 Edward III, next before the birth of the said heir, Robert, father of the said Thomas atte Beare died and on the same day made (condidit) his testament and appointed Thomas and Nicholas his executors, and so by the date of the testament the age of the heir is manifest. Joan, late the wife of Philip Maubank, being warned, did not come or send another in her name. |

Walter Deveroys of Bodenham, aged 50 years and more, says that the said Edmund was 21 years old and more on the morrow of the Conversion of St. Paul last, having been born at Dynnevor in Wales and baptized in the church of Landavayesyn on the morrow of the Conversion of St. Paul, 12 Edward III; and this he knows because on the Sunday after the birth of the said Edmund he started on his journey to Santiago.
Simon de Brokbury, aged 46 years and more, agrees and says that Sir (dompnus) John, then prior of Keyrmerthyn, was godfather of the said Edmund and he, Simon, was at the time in the service of the said prior. John Pryde, aged 48 years and more, agrees and says that Edmund Hakeluyt, knight, deceased, was likewise godfather of the said heir at the request of Reynold his father, as he has heard from trustworthy persons. John ap Rees, aged 54 years and more, agrees and says that he heard from the nurse of the said heir that one Zeuan ap Eynon, a Welshman, sent presents (exennia) to lady Joan, Edmund’s mother, at the time of his birth. Richard de Clehungre, aged 42 years and more, agrees and says that John his brother, now dead, was present at Dynnevor at the time of the birth and saw the household talking of and rejoicing over it. Richard Danseye, aged 40 years and more, agrees and says that one John, parochial chaplain at Landavayesyn, caused the day and year of the birth of the said Edmund to be entered in the missal of the church there because he was the firstborn son of the said Reynold. John de Calewehull, aged 50 years, Richard de Bourghhop, aged 44 years and more, agree and say that on Monday after the Purification after the birth of the said Edmund they were before the king’s coroner at Maddeleye in Straddel upon an inquest as to the fate (cujusdam infortunii)of one John le Taylour, who was drowned there. William de Hamenassh, aged 42 years, Edmund Boke, aged 44 years, and Thomas Paunsefot, aged 50 years and more, agree and say that one Philip Broun, then bailiff of Dynnevor, at Michaelmas after the birth of the said heir, rendered his account to Edmund Hakeluyt, knight, for the time that he was bailiff and had the acquittance of the said Edmund, by the date of which the full age of the said heir is sufficiently proved. Nicholas de Fulbrugge, aged 43 years and more, agrees. The escheator warned Thomas de Berkeleye, of Berkeleye, by Philip de Wynynton and Nicholas Torell at Rachesford, and he came not nor anyone on his behalf. |

The jury say that the said heir was of age on the feast of the Invention of the Holy Cross last, viz. 21 years complete.
Peter Eylrych (the first juror on the list), aged 50 years, says that he was godfather and that the said John was baptized in the church of St. Bartholomew, Ricardescastel, on the said feast of the Invention of the Holy Cross; and all the others, aged 45 years, agree and say that they were at mass on the day on which the said heir was baptized, and because they intended the said heir in the future to be their lord, they put the day of his birth in the missal, so there it is written that John, son and heir of John Talbot, lord of Ricardescastel, was born in Richard’s Castle and baptized in the church of the same town on the day and feast of the Invention of the Holy Cross, A.D. 1337. The escheator warned Isabel the king’s daughter by Walter Warde and Richard Norreys, and she came not by herself or her attorney. |

Simon son of Martin de Holbeche, aged 46 years and more, says that the said heir was 21 years old and more on the feast of SS. Peter and Paul, 33 Edward III, having been born at Flete in Holand, co. Lincoln, and baptized in the church of St. Mary Magdalene there on the feast of the Nativity of St. John the Baptist, 11 Edward III; and he knows that the said heir was baptized then because John, then parson of that church, caused his name and the day of his birth to be entered in the missal.
Roger de Holbeche, aged 40 years and more, and Hubert del Feld, aged 44 years and more, agree and say that on Monday after the birth of the said heir they started on their journey to Canterbury on a pilgrimage to St. Thomas the Martyr, in which journey, in returning from Canterbury, Roger was taken ill at London and lay there a fortnight. Thomas son of Laurence de Holbeche, aged 50 years, Walter Godard, aged 52 years, Richard de Welby of Multon, aged 48 years, and Thomas Friday of the same, aged 56 years and more, agree and say that at the octave of St. John the Baptist after the birth of the said heir they took their journey to London on a jury between William Hode of Flete, plaintiff, and William White of Holbeche, defendant. Thomas Scarlet of Quappelade, aged 60 years and more, agrees and says that at the feast of the Ascension before the birth of the said heir he had a son born named William. John Bolle of Quappelade, aged 38 years and more, agrees and says that at Easter before the birth of the said heir William Bolle, his father, died, whose death is entered in the kalendar of the black portas (portiforii) of the church of Quappelade. Robert Athelard, aged 53 years and more, and William Scarlet, aged 60 years and more, agree and say that at the feast of the Nativity of St. Mary after the birth of the said heir the vicarage house (mansio vicarie) of Quappelade was burnt down. Robert, son of Nicholas de Sutton, aged 47 years and more, agrees and says that on 26 April before the birth of the said heir his own eldest son John died, and his death is written in the kalendar of the great psalter of the church of Sutton. |

John Gyffard, aged 50 years and more, says that the said heir was born on 13 September, 11 Edward III, at Botylet in the parish of Lanraythou and baptized in the church of that town, and he knows this because William de Botreaux, the father, died in the year of the pestilence on 22 July, when the said heir was 11 years old.
Baldwin de Sancto Genesio, aged 60 years and more, agrees and says that the said heir was 22 years old on the feast of the Exaltation of Holy Cross last and that he was born and baptized as above; and he knows this because he, Baldwin, stayed (traxit moram) at St. Gennys (Sanctum Genesium) fifteen years and more ago and then the said heir was seven years old, as he learned from his mother. John de Treuger, aged 56 years and more, agrees with John Gyffard. Robert Trewen, aged 50 years and more, agrees and says that he has a son John, now aged 22 years, who was born at Michaelmas after the birth of the said heir. Richard de Tregodeck, aged 40 years and more, agrees and says that so it is commonly reported among the neighbours of the said William. John atte Style, aged 52 years and more, agrees and says that in the 22nd year there was a plea in the Common Bench between Sir Thomas de Stapeldon and Adam de Heligan concerning the patronage of the church of Mehynyot and the said heir was then 11 years old. Gilbert Boterdon, aged 40 years and more, and John Robert, aged 60 years and more, agree. William Molys, aged 54 years and more, John Skey … . aged 40 years and more, agree with Baldwin de Sancto Genesio, and William says that he has a cousin born in the same month and year as the heir. Richard Carwytha, aged 50 years and more, and Edward Pendeny, aged 56 years and more, agree with John atte Style. |

John Waleys, aged 50 years, says that the said Eleanor was 14 years old at Easter last, and this he knows because he was present when she was baptized in the church of Eystans, and heard then how a note of her birth was entered in the missal of that church on Easter day, 19 Edward III.
Thomas de Whelpeston, aged 48 years, agrees and says that he had a son John, born of Agnes his wife, about Whitsuntide after the Easter when the said Eleanor was born, and he was 14 years old at Whitsuntide last. John Naylinghirst, aged 44 years, agrees and says that he had a wife named Alice buried at Tilteye near Eystans on Tuesday in Easter week, 19 Edward III, and then he heard that John de Lovayne had a daughter named Eleanor born at Eystans. Ralph atte Stokke, aged 40 years, agrees and says that in the same year on Sunday after the Tuesday called ‘Hokeday’ he married one Alice de Bokkyngg, and the said Eleanor was born about Easter day before. Philip and James, 19 Edward III, next after the Easter when the said Eleanor was born. John Bealcombre, aged 40 years, agrees and says that after the Easter day, on which the said Eleanor was born, he started on a pilgrimage to Santiago. Nicholas Stonespol, aged 44 years, agrees and says that he had at Fynchyngfeld a cowhouse, which was burnt down by accident on Palm Sunday, 19 Edward III, and he heard of the birth of the said Eleanor about Easter day following. Robert Kneggebelle, aged 46 years, agrees and says that he knows by common report and the testimony of trustworthy persons. Robert Aunger, aged 38 years, agrees and says that he heard Margaret, wife of William le Webbe of Eystans, midwife (obstetricem) of Joan, mother of the said Eleanor, swear on the Book that the said Eleanor was 14 years old on Easter day last. Sewal Martel, aged 54 years, agrees and says that he knows by the common report of the whole countryside. John Botiler, aged 40 years, agrees and says that, at the time the said Eleanor was born, he acquired of William le Hirde of Eystans a messuage and 20a. land in Eystans of the fee of the aforesaid John de Lovayne. Roger Sayot, aged 43 years, agrees and says that he was in the service of John de Lovayne when the said Eleanor was born and left his service at Michaelmas following. |

Philip de Spechesleye, aged 60 years, says that the said John was born at Ellesfeld and baptized in the church there, and is 21 years old and more, for he, Philip, on the day of the baptism purchased a carucate of land in Ellesfeld of John Wylcokes (?), whereof he has a charter, by the date of which he knows that the said John son of Nicholas is of age.
John le Wodeward, aged 50 years and more, agrees and says that he was in the church the day that the said heir was baptized and a concord was made between him and William West in an action between them; he has an acquittance from the said William, by the date of which he knows that the heir is of age. John Boneton, aged 52 years and more, agrees and says that on the day of the baptism of the said heir he himself had a son born at Ellesfelde and baptized there, who is now 21 years old and more. John le Spencer, John de Tibertone and William Colemon, all aged 50 years and more, agree and say that on the day on which the said heir was baptized they proved the testament of Richard Red in the same church before the ordinary of the bishop of Worcester, by the date of the probate of which testament they know the said heir is of full age. John Janyn, William Hicke, William atte Heye, all 56 years old and more, agree and say that the day the said heir was baptized one Robert Willes gave them a bond for 60l., by the date of which they know the age of the said heir. John Heyne, aged 50 years and more, agrees and says that on the day that the said heir was baptized he purchased a messuage and two virgates of land in Stauntone by Ellesfeld of John Hert, and has a charter thereof, by the date of which he knows that the said heir is of age. John Amyas and Robert Trybel, both aged 53 years and more, agree and say that on the day the said heir was born one Roger West of Ellesfeld made his testament and appointed them executors and immediately afterwards died, and by the date of the probate of the testament they know that the said heir is of age. Adam de Kent, aged 44 years and more, says that the said heir was 21 years old and more on the feast of St. Margaret last, having been born at Hattele, co. Bedford, and baptized in the church there on the feast of St. Margaret, 11 Edward III; and this he knows because he himself had a son John born three weeks after the said heir.
Nicholas Burgeis, aged 38 years and more, agrees and says that Agnes his mother died eight weeks before the birth of the said heir. John Hervy, aged 42 years and more, agrees and says that he had a brother John, of the same age as the said heir, who died in 22 Edward III eleven years ago. William Hervy, aged 38 years, agrees and says that he was in the service of the mother of the said heir as carpenter in the year after the pestilence, which is now ten years ago, and then the mother of the said Edward said that he was eleven years old and more. Thomas Blayne, aged 40 years, agrees and says that John, the father of the said Edward, bought a carucate of land of Thomas Blayne, his father, by the date of the charter whereof he is sure that the said Edward is of age. Robert Heynesson, aged 53 years, and Hugh Adam, aged 56 years, agree and say that they were witnesses named in the above-mentioned charter. John Blod, aged 50 years, and Robert Blod, aged 46 years, agree and say that at the time of the birth of the said Edward his father was in the Scotch war, and at that time they were his servants, viz. men roofing (coopertores) his houses. John Smyth, aged 27 years, agrees and says that six years after his own birth his mother told him that she helped the mother of the said Edward at the time of his birth. Geoffrey Ferthyng, aged 50 years, agrees and says that John Botiller, the father, died at Coloyne 21 years ago next feast of the Decollation of St. John the Baptist, and the said Edward was then six weeks old. John Dawe, aged 40 years, agrees and says that he was in his father’s service, keeping his cows, and Elizabeth his mother died three weeks before the birth of the said Edward, now twenty-one years and six weeks ago. The escheator warned Guy de Bryen by William Rede and John Andreu, but neither he nor any one in his name was present. |
