539. RALPH BULMERE or DE BULMERE.
Writ, (fn. 1) 6 February, 33 Edward III.
NORTHAMPTON. Inq. made at Heyford, 15 February, 33 Edward III.
Herleston, Heyford, Bryngton and Colyntre. A third part of a ruined water-mill, 60a. land, 6a. meadow and 113s. 4d. rent held for life by demise of Alice, late the wife of Ralph de Bulmere the elder, knight, now deceased, of the inheritance of Ralph, son of the said Ralph Bolymer, knight, a minor in the king’s wardship; the tenements in Herleston and Heyford being held of John de Keynes by knight’s service and those in Colyntre and Bryngton of the duke of Lancaster by knight’s service.
He held no other lands in the county.
He died in Normandy before Michaelmas last, as the jury have heard.
The aforesaid Ralph, son of Ralph Bulmere the elder, knight, a minor in the king’s wardship, is cousin and heir of the deceased.

HEREFORD. Inq. taken at Brymfelde, Sunday after St. Valentine, 33 Edward III.
Brymfelde. The manor (extent given) held jointly by the said John and Pernel his wife, who survives, by the king’s charter to them and the heirs male of their bodies, of the king in chief by the services of keeping the king’s hays of Morf, Schirleet and other hays.
Ashton. 30a. land, 1a. wood held jointly by the said John and Pernel of Elizabeth de Cornewayle by service of 6s. 8d. yearly.
He died on Monday after the Purification last. John de Boulewas his son, aged 24 years and more, is his heir.

SALOP. Inq. made at Boulewas, Monday after St. Valentine, 33 Edward III.
Boulewas. The manor (extent (fn. 2) given) held jointly by the said John and Pernel his wife and his heirs of the king in chief, by service of keeping the king’s hays of Morf and Shirlet with other hays.
He held nothing in demesne as of fee in the county.

SALOP. Inq. made at Boulewas, Saturday after St. Peter’s Chair, 33 Edward III.
Boulewas. The manor (extent (fn. 2) given) held of the king in chief by service of keeping the king’s forests and hays in the county of Salop.
Ezenbrugge. A messuage and a carucate of land and 33s. 4d. rent held of the king in chief by the aforesaid service.
Legh under Brokhurst. 20s. rent held of James Daudeleye by service of a rose yearly.
Rodynton. A bovate of land held of Richard, earl of Arundel, by service of 1/2d. yearly.
He held all the above in demesne as of fee.
Date of death as above. John de Boulewas his son, aged 26 years at Easter last, is his heir.
Writ of certiorari to the escheator in co. Salop to enquire as to whether the office of keeper of the (balliva custodiendi) king’s forests and hays of the county is gross or appurtenant to some manor or tenement. 22 March, 33 Edward III.
SALOP. Inq. taken at Boulewas on Monday after the Annunciation, 33 Edward III.
The said office is gross by itself and not appurtenant to any manor, and ought to belong to John de Boulewas, his son, after his death.
Writ of dedimus potestatem to William de Frome to receive the attorneys of Pernel, late the wife of John de Boulewas, in a plea before the king in Chancery by a writ of scire facias between the said Pernel and John de Boulewas the son, to shew cause why the manor of Boulewas, taken into the king’s hand after the death of John the father, should not be delivered to John the son. 20 March, 33 Edward III.
(Endorsed.) Pernel came before William de Frome at Hereford and appointed Nicholas de Eye her attorney.
Writ of scire facias to the sheriff of Salop to warn Pernel, late the wife of John de Boulewas, to be in Chancery three weeks after Easter next to shew cause why the office of keeper of the forests and hays of Salop should not be delivered to the heir with the said John’s other lands and tenements; it having been found by one inquisition that the said office is gross, and by others that the said John and Pernel held the manor of Boulewas, co. Salop, and Brymfelde, co. Hereford, jointly to them and the heirs of John of the king in chief by service of keeping the king’s hays of Morf and Shirlet and other hays. 8 April, 33 Edward III.

Writ to the escheator in co. Dorset after the death of Alice, late the wife of Reynold fitz Reynald, who held for life of the inheritance of Edmund, son and heir of Reynold fitz Herberd, a minor in the king’s wardship. 9 July, 33 Edward III.
DORSET. Inq. taken at Dorchestre, Monday the feast of St. Mary Magdalene, 33 Edward III.
Wolueton. A messuage, 100a. land, 10a. meadow and 4s. rent held as in the writ, of Elizabeth, late the wife of Henry fitz Rogier, as of her manor of Chywton, co. Somerset, by service of a twenty-fourth part of a knight’s fee.
She died on Monday after St. Dunstan last. John fitz Reynauld her kinsman, aged 7 years and more, is her heir.

Kettelbergh. Two parts of the manor (extent given), including a leet on St. Mark’s day, with the advowson of the church, held of the king in chief as of the crown by service of a twentieth part of a knight’s fee.
He died on Monday after the Epiphany last. Edmund Charles his uncle, aged 50 years and more, is his heir.

[CAMBRIDGE.] Inq. (undated).
He held nothing in the county, because he conveyed all his lands &c. in Fulbourn to Thomas de Shardelowe his brother, Roger atte Spence and John Baudewyne, about the feast of Trinity in the king’s 31st year; and all his lands &c. in Campes and Horseth to Thomas de Shardelowe aforesaid, knight, John Grene, chaplain, William de la Chaumbre, chaplain, John Clovill of West Hanyngfeld and Richard Harecroft on Thursday before St. Margaret in the king’s 28th year.
He died on Saturday after the Annunciation, 33 Edward III. John, son of Edmund de Shardelowe, of full age, is his heir.

544. HAMO DE ROUTHALE.
Writ to the escheator to enquire as to the lands and heir late of the said Hamo and who has been in possession of his lands since his death and received the issues. 8 July, 33 Edward III.
SALOP. Inq. made at Shrewsbury, Friday the morrow of the Gule of August, 33 Edward III.
Routhale. A messuage and a virgate of land held of the lord of Routhale by service of a quarter of corn and 7d. yearly.
He died about the Gule of August, 22 Edward III. Thomas de Routhale, his son, aged 25 years, is his heir.
No one has received the profits of the said land since the death of the said Hamo, because it is worth no more than the rent but lies in common.

He died on Thursday after the Purification last. John de Stanford his son, aged 30 years and more, is his heir.

La Castel. A messuage, a virgate of land and 2a. meadow.
Stonton. A messuage and 20a. land.
All held of the king in chief as parcels of the manor of Ideshale, which is held of the king in chief by knight’s service.
He died on 10 November last. Thomas de Leversete his son, aged 4 years, is his heir.

BUCKINGHAM. Inq. taken at Hertwell, Wednesday in Easter week, 33 Edward III.
Hertwell and Little Hampden. The manor, with the advowson of the church of Hertwell, held of William de Hertwell and his heirs by service of a clove (clavum gariophili) at Easter, as appears by a fine levied in the king’s court in the quinzaine of Easter, 55 Henry III.
The said Nicholas died on Wednesday after St. Gregory. Robert his son, aged 6 years and more, is his heir.
Writ of plenius certiorari as to tenements held of the king in chief. 30 May, 33 Edward III.
BUCKINGHAM. Inq. taken at Aillesbury, Thursday after the Nativity of St. John the Baptist, 33 Edward III.
Nicholas de Luyton held the manors of Hertwell and Little Hampden of the king in chief by knight’s service (per feodum militare) and no lands or tenements of anyone else.
Copy of pleas in Chancery of the quinzaine of Michaelmas, 33 Edward III.
Alice, late the wife of the said Nicholas, says as in the first inquisition, that he held the manors of Henry, kinsman and heir of William, son of William de Hertwell, in socage by service of a clove, and Henry holds them of the king as of the honour of Peverel, so that the wardship of the heir and custody of his lands ought to belong to her as nearest (propinquiorem) to the said heir. John Gaunt, who sues for the king, says that the said Nicholas held the manors by knight’s service as in the second inquisition. A day is given the said Alice coram rege on the morrow of St. Martin. The sheriff is ordered to summon 24 knights and others for a jury, and to warn Walter Whithors, to whom the king has granted the custody of the land and heir, to be present to inform the court on the king’s right.

Writ, 13 May, 33 Edward III.
SOMERSET. Inq. taken at Ievele, Friday before Ascension day, 33 Edward III.
Stapelton by Mertok. Two parts of the manor (extent given), including two willow beds (salseta) the twigs of which are cut every third year, ‘Churcheshutte’ of 21 cocks and 43 hens, and a custom at the gule of August of 11 1/2 geese, held of the king in chief by service of half a knight’s fee. The third part of the manor is held in dower by Sibyl, mother of the deceased.
Botecleghe. A messuage, a carucate of land and 5s. rent held for life by the said Robert jointly with Elizabeth his wife, who survives, of the heir of Nicholas de Monte Acuto in free socage by the demise of Thomas de Staunton; the reversion belongs to John de Seyncler, son of the said Robert and Elizabeth, for his life.
The said Robert died on 2 May last. Richard his son, aged 23 years and more, is his heir.

Shirbourn. The manor, with the advowson of the church, similarly held by knight’s service.
He held no other lands in the county.
He died on Monday before the Nativity of St. Mary last in parts beyond the sea. John his son, aged half a year, is his heir.

Writ to the escheator in co. Northumberland to enquire as to the lands and heir of the said Roger and who has been in possession of his lands since his death, and has received the issues. 8 February, 33 Edward III.
NORTHUMBERLAND. Inq. taken at Newcastle upon Tyne, 24 March, 33 Edward III.
Scranewod. A moiety of the manor held of the king in chief by reason of the fees late of John de Middelton, an adherent of the Scots, which are in the king’s hand by his forfeiture, by homage and fealty and by service of a sixth part of a knight’s fee and by service of 8d. or a pair of gilt spurs yearly.
The other moiety of the manor held of Henry de Percy, as of the castle and manor, of Alnewyk, by knight’s service.
Horsley. Lands and tenements (unspecified) held of the heirs of Philip de Somervill by knight’s service and by service of 8s. 4d. yearly.
He held no other lands &c. in the county or elsewhere, as they understand.
The said Roger died on 2 May, 14 Edward III. Thomas de Horsley his son, aged 48 years, is his heir.
The escheator, by virtue of an inquisition taken before him, took the premises into the king’s hand on 10 April last and has charged himself with the issues in his account to the king; Thomas de Horsley, above named, received the issues from the time of his father’s death until 10 April last as heir without process of the king’s court.

ESSEX. Inq. taken at Branketre, 3 April, 33 Edward III.
Liston. The manor (extent given), including a moiety of a watermill, and 7a. wood, with a moiety of the advowson of the church, held of the king in chief by service of serving the king with wafers (wafris) at his coronation.
The said John held no other lands in the county.
He died in Normandy about the feast of the Conversion of St. Paul last, as the jury understand from the report of John Blammester, who was in his company when he died. William de Liston, his uncle on the father’s side, aged 30 years and more, is his heir.

Great Shelford. The manor (extent given) held for life and for a year after his death by demise of Laurence de Hastinges, earl of Pembroke, as of the inheritance of John de Hastinges, son and heir of the said earl, a minor in the king’s wardship, of the king in chief by knight’s service. From this manor the bishop of Ely receives yearly 5s. 2d., and the countess of Pembroke 60s. by way of dower.
Trumpeton. 3 1/2a. meadow held of the same lords.
The said John died on Tuesday after Michaelmas, 33 Edward III. Laurence de Grendon his son, of full age, is his heir.

553. HUGH DE LUTERYNGTON.
Writ to enquire as to the lands and heir of Hugh de Luteryngton and who has had possession of his lands since his death and received the issues. Tested by Thomas keeper of England, Redyng, 24 January, 33 Edward III.
NORTHAMPTON. Inq. made at Hakelynton, 4 February, 34 Edward III.
Hakelynton, Pydynton and Horton. A messuage, a carucate of land, eight half virgates in the hands of customers and 10s. rent held of the heir of Laurence de Hastynges, late earl of Pembroke, tenant in chief, a minor in the king’s wardship, by knight’s service.
He died about the feast of the Annunciation, 23 Edward III, in the pestilence. Katherine, daughter of the said Hugh, aged 15 years at the feast of the Conversion of St. Paul last, is his heir.
Robert Wyard was in possession of the premises from the time of the death of the said Hugh by the king’s commission until his own death, rendering to the king in the wardrobe 100s. yearly; and since his death William de Rothewelle, clerk, has been in possession on the same terms and has received the issues.

SURREY. Inq. taken at Southewerk, 30 January, 34 Edward III.
Southewerke. 10l. rent for the farm of Southewerke held for life of the king’s gift, date not known, to be received yearly by the hands of the mayor and citizens of London in the chamber at the Gyldehalle at Easter and Michaelmas by equal portions.
He died on 11 December, 33 Edward III.
He held no other lands of the king in chief in the county, and his heir is not known.

555. ROGER, SON OF HAMO BASY.
Writ to the escheator to enquire as to the lands and heir of Roger, son of Hamo Basy, and who has had possession of his lands since his death and received the issues. 16 May, 33 Edward III.
YORK. Inq. taken at York on Wednesday in the fourth week of Lent, 34 Edward III.
Bilburgh and Sandwath. Tenements worth 40s. held of John Pouger, surviving, and Margery his wife, deceased, at the time of Roger’s death, by the law of England of the inheritance of the said Margery, and of Richard de Gascrik, then deceased, and Elizabeth his wife, still surviving, in right of the latter, by knight’s service, the said Margery and Elizabeth being daughters and heirs of John Paynel of Drax, deceased.
The said Roger died 19 July, 23 Edward III, in the pestilence. Richard his brother, aged 11 years and more at the time [of the death] of the said Roger, is his heir.
William de Berley, William Gra of York, Richard de Bekyngham and Walter de Kelsterne of York bought the custody of the premises of the said John Pouger and Elizabeth and received the issues from the time of the death of the said Roger until 6 April, 33 Edward III, when the escheator took the premises into the king’s hand, having found by inquisition taken ex officio that Roger held them at the time of his death by knight’s service of the heir of John Pouger of Drax, tenant in chief, a minor in the king’s wardship, and that Richard the heir had entered without process of court, and that the same Richard at the time of Roger’s death was a minor. John Pouger was alive at the time of the said Roger’s death.
He held no other lands in the county.

Great Houghton. A messuage and three parts of a messuage and a virgate and three parts of a virgate of land held of the heir of Laurence de Hastynges, as in the writ, by service of a twentieth part of a knight’s fee.
Northampton town. Three burgages held in free burgage (tanquam liberum burgagium).
He held no other lands in the county.

STAFFORD. Inq. taken before Philip de Lutteleye, deputy of the escheator, at Yoxhale on Tuesday after St. Scholastica, 34 Edward III.
Yoxhale. The manor held for life by demise of Thomas de Holand, knight, of Henry, duke of Lancaster, as of the honour of Tuttebury, by service of half a knight’s fee.
He held no other lands in the county.
He died about the feast of the Nativity of the Virgin last in parts beyond the sea; it is not known on what day. Robert de Holand, knight, aged 40 years and more, is his heir.
Writ, 20 November, 33 Edward III.
SUFFOLK. Inq. taken at Kerseye, 31 December, 33 Edward III.
Kersye. The manor (extent given), including a market, held for life of Thomas de Holand, knight, and Joan his wife, by their gift, with reversion to them and the heirs of Joan, service not specified.
He died on 3 September last in Normandy, according to the report of trustworthy persons. Robert de Holand, knight, aged 40 years and more, is his heir in blood.

SURREY. Inq. taken at Taleworthe, 18 January, 33 Edward III.
Taleworthe. The manor (extent given) held for life by gift of Thomas de Holond and Joan his wife, with reversion to them, of the honour of Gloucester, by service of one fourth part of a knight’s fee and by service of rendering yearly to the prior of Merton 3s., to Robert son of Neal (Nigelli) 20d. and to the prior without Bischopesgate 2 1/2d.
He held no other lands in the county.
He died on 16 December last in parts beyond the seas as they understand. Thomas de Holond, aged 40 years, is his brother and heir.

DERBY. Inq. taken at Chastrefeld, 12 January, 33 Edward III.
Chastrefeld. The manor (extent given), including two water-mills charged from time immemorial with a yearly payment of 6l. to the hospital of St. Leonard, and a market and fair, held for life by gift of Thomas de Holand and Joan his wife.
Assheford. The manor (extent given), including a fulling-mill and a lead mine, similarly held.
Both manors are held of the king in chief, service not known, and the reversions belong to Thomas and Joan.
Dalbury. The manor (extent given) held for life by demise of Robert de Holand, of Henry duke of Lancaster by homage and fealty.
The said Otto died about the feast of St. Peter’s Chains as was said.

Writ to the escheator to enquire as to the lands which came into the king’s hand by the death of Ralph le Botiller of Northbury and the minority of Ralph, son of John le Botiller, his kinsman and heir, who has died a minor in the king’s wardship, and as to the date of death and heir of the latter. 1 August, 33 Edward III.
SALOP. Inq. made at Elarton on Monday after St. Bartholomew, 33 Edward III.
Pulrebache. The manor held of the king in chief by knight’s service, came into the king’s hand as in the writ.
Ralph son of John died in the year 22 Edward III. Edward le Botiller his brother, aged 21 years and more, is his heir.

LINCOLN. Inq. taken at Horncastre on Sunday after the Decollation of St. John the Baptist, 33 Edward III.
Holtham, Wilkesby and Conyngesby by Tateshale. 30a. poor and sandy land, 7a. meadow and 2a. wood held of the king in chief by knight’s service, came into the king’s hand as in the writ.
Date of death and heir of Ralph, son of John, they cannot ascertain after diligent enquiry because he never lived in co. Lincoln.

Writ to the escheator to enquire as to the lands and heir of Joan, late the wife of Ralph le Botiller, of Northbury, and who has been in possession of her lands since her death and received the issues. 13 August, 33 Edward III.
BEDFORD. Inq. taken at Hattele on Saturday after the Nativity of the Virgin, 33 Edward III.
Bury Hattele. The manor held of Sir John de Moubrai, as of the barony of Bedeford, by knight’s service.
She died on Thursday after St. Barnabas, 23 Edward III. Edward le Botiller is her heir and was of full age on the feast of St. Margaret the Virgin last.
Guy de Brian had possession of the manor by the king’s grant from the time of the death of the said Joan until Easter, 32 Edward III, and from that date until the said feast of St. Margaret Roger Straunge had possession by the demise of the said Guy, and received the issues.

She died on Monday after Trinity, 23 Edward III. Heir as above, her son, aged 21 years and more.

SURREY. Inq. taken at Croydon, 12 March, 34 Edward III.
Stangrave in Blecchynglegh. Tenements worth 37s. 6d. a year held for life jointly with Idonea his wife, who survives, of the gift of John Stratteford, parson of the church of Peccheham, and Simon atte Stoket, of the king in chief by service of an eighth part of a knight’s fee.
He died on 9 February last, 34 Edward III. John Breton, knight, aged 40 years and more, is his kinsman and heir.
Okstede. The manor, with the advowson of the church, held for life of the king in chief, as of the honour of Boulogne, by service of one knight’s fee, by fine levied in the king’s court, with remainder after the death of the said Robert and Joan, sometime his wife, deceased, to Reynold de Cobham, knight, and Joan his wife and the heirs of their bodies.
He held no other lands in the county.

Hywyssh Chamflour. 56 1/2a. arable, 3r. meadow held for life by way of dower, of the inheritance of Alice, sister of Nicholas le Walssh, sometime husband of the said Maud, whom Walter Malet married, Joan, another sister of the said Nicholas, and Simon, son of Maud, third sister of the same Nicholas, long since dead, and the daughters of Edith, his fourth sister, viz. Joan married to William le Swon, Lucy married to Richard Malet, and Cristina married to John atte Hulle, all of full age, and John, son of Elizabeth, fourth daughter of the said Edith, who is 20 years of age and more and in the king’s wardship: held of Robert de Novo Burgo by knight’s service.
The premises being on the borders of Devon and Somerset are fallow and worth nothing except for pasture.
The said Maud died on Wednesday before St. Andrew last. Ralph de Middelneye, knight, her brother, aged 50 years and more, is next heir of her blood.

563. ROBERT SYFREWAST of Hoke.
Writ to the escheator to enquire as to the lands and heir of Robert Syfrewast of Hoke and who has had possession of his lands since his death and received the issues. 16 January, 33 Edward III.
DORSET. Inq. taken at Cerne, Wednesday in Easter week, 34 Edward III.
Westshulfham. A messuage, a carucate of land and 5a. meadow held of the heir of Roger Syfrewast, as of his manor of Morkurchul, by fealty and rent of a sparrowhawk or 12d. After the death of the deceased, John Syfrewast, his son and heir, had possession for a year and afterwards gave to Walter Syfrewast a yearly rent of 20l. for life charged on the premises, and after that gave the premises themselves to the same Walter, reserving the reversion to himself and his heirs; Joan, late the wife of Robert Syfrewast, the deceased, being alive at this time.
Hoke and Stapulford. A messuage, dovecote, two carucates of land, 13a. meadow, 60a. pasture, 50a. wood, 4l. 18s. rent held jointly by the said Robert and Joan his wife, now dead, of the king in chief by service of a fourth part of a knight’s fee. After the death of Joan Walter Deverous entered the premises and from the feast of the Epiphany, 28 Edward III, the day of Joan’s death, until the feast of St. Peter called Ad vincula next following he received the issues, claiming to be chief lord. John de Palton, late escheator, took the premises into the king’s hand by the king’s command and remained in possession and received the issues from the said feast of St. Peter until Whitsunday following, after which Robert de Hadham, as bailiff of the king’s chamber, entered and he still has possession and has received the issues.
Cherleton. A messuage and a carucate of land held as above of Robert Martyn by service of one sixth part of a knight’s fee. The latter entered as chief lord after the death of Joan and remained in possession until the feast of St. Peter ad Vincula following, when they were seized by the escheator and delivered to Robert de Hadham (as above).
West Chikerel. Six bovates of land, 4a. meadow, and 8s. rent held as above of the king in chief by service of a sixth part of a knight’s fee, taken into the king’s hand by the escheator on the death of Joan and delivered by him to Robert de Hadham (as above).
La Yurd. A messuage and a carucate of land held as above of Richard de Horthyngton, clerk, as of the manor of Ramesham by service of a sixth part of a knight’s fee, delivered by the escheator to Robert de Hadham as above.
Ernlegh. 40a. land and 20a. wood held as above of Robert fitz Payn by service of a sixth part of a knight’s fee and rendering 12d. yearly, delivered by the escheator to the same Robert as above.
Robert Syfrewast died on Whit Sunday, 21 Edward III. John, son of Elizabeth daughter of the said Robert and Joan, aged 21 years on the feast of St. Martin last, is his heir.

NORFOLK. Inq. taken at Norwich, 2 December, 33 (fn. 5) Edward III.
Halveryate. Two parts of four pieces of marsh and pasture containing 980a. held for life by grant of Thomas de Brotherton, late earl of Norfolk and marshal of England, of the king in chief as parcel of the said earl’s barony; the reversion, together with the third part, held in dower by Mary, late the wife of the said earl, belongs to the right heirs of the earl, viz. Margaret, wife of Walter de Mauny, aged 24 years and more, daughter and one of the heirs of the said earl, and Elizabeth, wife of Walter de Ufford, aged 15 years and more, Joan, wife of William de Ufford, aged 11 years and more, and Maud their sister, aged 13 years and more, daughters and heirs of Alice, late the wife of Edward de Monte Acuto, the other of the heirs of the said earl.
The deceased died on Monday after St. Thomas the Apostle, 32 Edward III. Henry her son, aged 15 years, is her heir in blood.

Hereford. Roger de Knaweswal, who was seised on the day of his death, in demesne as of fee, of a toft, bequeathed the same to John his illegitimate son, who died without heir of his body. The toft is held of the king as free burgage of the town of Hereford by rendering 12d. yearly by the hands of the bailiffs as parcel of the farm of the town.

HONOUR OF WALLINGFORD. Inq. taken at Bourghwardescote, Tuesday after St. Bartholomew, 33 Edward III, before Thomas Catewy of Harewell and John de Lamborne of Suthwork, appointed by commission of Edward, prince of Wales &c., to enquire by a jury of the honour of Walyngford as to the date of death and heir of Philip de Drokenesford, who held of the prince in chief the manor of Bourghwardescote.
He died on Monday in Whitsun week, 29 Edward III. He has a son named John, who is his heir, now 20 years of age.
Original inquisition with three of the four tags for seals still remaining with portions of eight seals, two being almost complete.
