KENT. Inq. taken at Elham, 25 September, 49 Edward III.
Newentonbelhous by Hethe. The manor (extent given), held immediately of Richard de Ponyngges, a minor in the king’s wardship, by service of a fourth part of a knight’s fee.
Date of death not known. John Chasteleyn, aged 11 years and more, is her kinsman and next heir.

Writ of precipimus, 4 November, 49 Edward III.
ESSEX. Inq. taken at Coggeshale, Saturday after St. Lucy, 49 Edward III.
Stanewey. Long before his death he divested himself of the manor in favour of John Bernes, citizen of London, John Bernes, son of the said John, and Thomas Baynard, all now deceased, and John Stanstede, parson of the church of Coppeford, who survives, on condition that they should enfeoff Alice his wife thereof after his death, if she should outlive him, to hold to her and his heirs by her, and that, in default of such heir, if any person found to be the next heir in blood and claiming the manor by descent should be willing to pay five years’ value of the manor to the feoffees or the survivor of them, then he should have the manor to him and his heirs, but that if he should definitely (solide) refuse to pay, the manor should be sold by the feoffees and the proceeds distributed for the souls of the said Thomas and Alice and their ancestors, as should seem best to the feoffees. All the tenants, both free and bond, attorned under this feoffment. Thomas and Alice died without issue between them. The manor is held of Walter Fitz Wauter, knight, by service of a pair of gilt spurs or 6d.
Thomas died on Thursday before St. Laurence, 48 Edward III. Margaret daughter of John Casteleyn, aged 6 years about the feast of St. Matthias last, is his kinswoman and next heir in blood. Since his death John de Stanstede aforesaid has had possession of the manor and received the profits under the above feoffment.

From 12 August, 35 Edward III, until 5 March, 45 Edward III, the premises were in the possession of William de Hynton, John Wyot and Robert Broun, bailiffs of the honor of Reylegh, during their several terms of office, and since 5 March aforesaid in the possession of John Welde, John Batail and Roger Keteryche, escheators, during their several terms of office.

He died on Tuesday after St. Hilary two years ago. (fn. 1) Walter his son, aged 12 years, is his heir, and John de Esthalle has had possession of the manor ever since his death.

Wodespene. The manor, held for life, by demise of Humphrey de Bohun, late earl of Hereford and Essex, with remainder to the earl’s right heirs. It is held of the earl of Pembroke by service of 1 lb. pepper yearly.
He died on Saturday after the Nativity of St. John the Baptist last. Eleanor wife of Thomas of Wodestoke, knight, aged 9 years and more, and Mary, aged 4 years and more, are the earl’s daughters and heirs.

ESSEX. Inq. taken at Chelmersford, Wednesday after St. Matthew, 49 Edward III.
Wydeford. The manor (extent given), with the advowson of the church, held of the earl of March by service of one knight’s fee.
Writele. 60a. unfilled land, 4a. meadow and 20s. rent, held of the countess of Hereford, as in the king’s ancient demesne of the town of Writele, by service of 18s. 6d. yearly and suit of court every three weeks at the manor of Writele.
Gynge Mounteny. A messuage, 100a. arable, 12a. pasture, 4a. meadow, 20a. well-grown (grossi) wood and 40s. rent, held jointly with Eleanor his wife, who survives, by gift and feoffment of Roger Wolverston, Thomas Bonde, John Coteler, clerk, and Roger de la Marche to them and the heirs male of their bodies; whereof 40a. land are held of Robert Mounteney, knight, in socage, by service of 12s. yearly, and the rest is held of the tenants of a tenement called ‘Mounchesy,’ service not known.
He died on Sunday after St. Bartholomew last. Bartholomew his son, of full age, is his heir.

SUFFOLK. Inq. (indented) taken at Ipswich, Wednesday after St. Matthew, 49 Edward III.
Everwarten. The manor (extent given), with the advowson of the church, held of the king in chief by service of leading 100 footmen from Newmarket to Wales on the king’s service and at his wages when there is war in Wales.
Aldwarton. A tenement containing a toft, 30a. land, and 3s. 4d. rent, held of the earl of March, as of the honor of Clare, service [not known].
Everwarton. A tenement called ‘Thorp’ (extent given), held of the prior of St. John of Jerusalem in England, service not known.
Herkestede. A tenement called ‘Knyghtes’ containing 20a. land, held of John Bretton, service not known.
Petistre. A tenement containing 20a. land and 6s. 8d. rent, held of the earl of Suffolk, service not known.
All held for life by the courtesy of England after the death of Isabel Davileris, his wife.
He died on 26 August last. Bartholomew, aged 27 years and more, is son and heir of him and the said Isabel.

Shryvenham. A messuage and a carucate of land, held of the king in chief by this service, namely, that as often as the king shall be pleased to travel over the bridge of Fowyaresmull, the lord of the said messuage and land shall come before him and offer him two white capons with these words, “Behold, lord, these two white capons which you used to have at another time, and not now.”
Beckote. The manor, held of the prior of Nuion at fee-farm.
He died on 19 October last. John de Beckote, his son, aged 30 years and more, is his heir.

HUNTINGDON. Inq. taken at Glatton, 20 October, 49 Edward III.
Glatton. A messuage and 6a. land, held of the king in chief by service of 10d. yearly for sheriff’s aid; 1 1/2a. land, held of Robert de Wassingle by service of 6d. yearly and suit of court every three weeks; and 1 1/2a. land, held of Gilbert the Chaplain by service of 1/2d. yearly.
John was in possession of no lands at the time of his death; but Henry Bere, John’s father, held the premises when he died 8 years ago, and on his death they came to the king’s hands by reason of John’s minority. Afterwards the king granted the custody thereof to Margery, wife of the said Henry and mother of the said John, until the latter’s lawful age. John was a minor at the time of his death, and the premises are still in the king’s hand.
John died on Saturday after the Exaltation of the Holy Cross last. Alice Bere and Ellen Bere, aged 30 years and more, sisters of Henry and aunts of John, are the latter’s next heirs.

Little Reynes. A messuage, 60a. arable, 2a. meadow, 4a. pasture, 20a. wood, and 9s. rents of assise of free tenants, held of the king in chief by service of a fourth part of a knight’s fee, and now held by Thomas Howelot for a term of years by demise of the deceased.
Messingg, [Inneworth], Great Briche, Little Briche, Coppeford, Estthorp, and Teye. Manors of Messingg, Brichenehall, and Le Castel, with their appurtenances in the above towns, and also 40a. land in the towns of Messingg, [Wethermondeford] (fn. 2) and Feringg formerly of Walter de Todenham, held jointly with Katharine his wife, who survives, by gift of John de Rokwode, Ralph de Tendryngge, Nicholas Berton, John Teye, John Maylond, rector of the church of Bureschepingge, Simon atte Feen, and John Clerk of Estthorp to him and the said Katharine for their lives, with successive remainders to Isabel, his mother, for life, to John, Robert, Thomas and Richard, his sons, in fee tail, and to his right heirs. The manor of Messing is held of the king, as of the honor of Reymes, by service of one knight’s fee; those of Brichenehall and Le Castel of John Gernon by service of a clove at Christmas; and the 40a. land of John Sutton, by service of one ‘wardpeny’ at Hokeday.
He died on 8 October last. Richard Baynard, his son, aged 4 years at the Purification last, is his heir.

YORK. Inq. taken at York, in the castle, 1 August, 49 Edward III.
Hoton Colswayne. A messuage with garden called ‘Gaytskogh,’ 9 tofts, 14 bovates and 60a. land, 7a. meadow and 30s. rent, held jointly with Agnes his wife, who survives, to them and the heirs of their bodies, by gift of Adam de Appilton, chaplain. The premises are held of the king in chief by service of a fourth part of a knight’s fee.
Hoton Colswayne. The manor and 3 bovates of land with the site of a watermill on the river Derwent, held jointly, as above, by gift of William de Ryton and Richard Clerk of Malton, chaplains. The premises are held of John Percy of Kyldale in socage by 1d. only.
Hoton Berdolf. The manor and 3 bovates of land, held jointly, as above, by gift of the same William and Richard. The premises are held of Hugh Berdolf in socage at a rent of 4d. yearly.
Hoton Mynchon. 12 bovates of land, held jointly, as above, by gift of the same William and Richard. They are held of John Percy of Kyldale in socage at a rent of 1d. yearly.
Sandburn and Qwitkerre. The lawns, in the town of Stokton, containing 200a. moor and pasture.
Carleton by Warthill. 100a. land, from which he granted a yearly rent of 20s. to Robert Boulot for life.
The last two items he held [jointly], (fn. 3) to him and his heirs. They are held of the king by service of rendering yearly at the Exchequer by the hands of the sheriff a fee-farm of 53s. 4d.
Habton. 10a. meadow, held to him and his heirs of Thomas de Middelton at a rent of 1/2d. yearly. He granted a yearly rent of 20s. from the said meadow to William Percehay, knight, and his heirs.
Swynton. 6s. rent, and 3s. rent in Broghton, issuing from a place called ‘Tollercroft,’ held to him and his heirs of the said William Percehay by homage and fealty.
New Malton. A toft, held to him and his heirs of William de Aton, the elder, by fealty.
He died on 20 May last. Mary his daughter, aged 2 years less a quarter, is his heir.

98. JOHN SON OF WALTER BASKERVILL, knight.
Writ of precipimus, 6 February, 49 Edward III.
SALOP. Inq. taken at Shrewsbury, 2 April, 49 Edward III.
Lauton. A messuage, a carucate of land, 4a. meadow, 4a. several pasture and 6s. 8d. rent of assise, held of the king in chief by service of grand serjeanty.
Pikethorn. A messuage, a carucate of land, 2a. meadow and 13s. rent of assise, held of the king in chief by service of rendering 16d. yearly at the Exchequer by the hands of the sheriff.
Crissech. At one time of his life he held the manor of Crissech of the earl of March by knight’s service. Before his death he enfeoffed thereof Alexander de Bayton, Robert de Breodon, John Williames and Richard Spark, chaplains, and their heirs, on condition that they should pay to Margery de Capenhurst, out of the first profits received therefrom, 100l. which she formerly lent him, and that they should enfeoff the son or daughter born of Katharine his wife, then pregnant, when it should come of age, of the said manor, and that when the said Margery had been satisfied of the 100l. they should distribute the residue of the profits of the manor for his soul and the soul of Elizabeth his mother. Thus the feoffment was made collusively.
He died on 3 April, 48 Edward III. John his son, aged 2 years on 2 August last, is his heir.
Since his death the said feoffees have had possession of the manor of Crissech and received the issues thereof, save that the aforesaid Katharine has a third part of the manor by way of dower. The premises in Lauton and Pikethorn are still in the king’s hand, and the escheators have to answer for the issues thereof since the death of the said John son of Walter.

GLOUCESTER. Inq. (indented) taken at Cirencestre, Saturday, the feast of SS. Tiburcius and Valerian, 49 Edward III.
Eycote. The manor (extent given), held of the king by reason of the temporalities of the bishopric of Worcester being in his hand, of the manor of Bybury, by knight’s service and service of 12d. and 6 bushels of wheat yearly, and by suit of court at the manor of Bybury twice yearly.
Rodmerton. A messuage and half a virgate of land, held of Henry Bordon by knight’s service and service of 12d. yearly.
He died on Friday after St. Gregory last. Thomas his son, aged 11 years on Sunday, the feast of the Annunciation last, is his heir.

WARWICK. Inq. taken at Coventre, Friday before St. Gregory, 50 Edward III.
Wylie. A rent of 8l. 11s. 4d. Moreover at Christmas, 48 Edward III, he had a ruined and valueless windmill there and demised it to Henry Smyth for life, to be repaired at Henry’s costs, at a rent of a rose for the first three years and 15s. yearly thereafter. The premises are held of the heir of the earl of Pembroke, a minor in the king’s wardship, by knight’s service.
He died on Monday after the Assumption, 49 Edward III. He had four sisters, all now deceased, to wit, Denise, Ida, Alice and Ankeretta. Hugh de Cokeseye married Denise, and had issue by her Walter de Cokeseye, knight, his son, aged 25 years and more, who is one of Edward’s heirs. William Trussell of Odyham married Ida, and had issue by her Margaret his daughter, aged 22 years and more, who is Edward’s second heir. Nicholas de Langeford married Alice, and had issue by her Nicholas de Langeford, his son, lately deceased, who had issue Nicholas his son, aged 25 years and more, who is Edward’s third heir. John Strange of Blakemere married Ankeretta, and had issue by her John Strange, his son, deceased, who had issue John Strange the third, deceased, who had issue Joan his daughter, aged 2 years, who is Edward’s fourth heir.
Writ, 6 October, 49 Edward III.
BUCKINGHAM. Inq. taken at Weston Turvill, Wednesday after St. Martin, 49 Edward III.
Weston Turvill. A moiety of the manor (extent given), Avith the advowson of the church, held of John duke of Lancaster, as of the honor of Leycestre, by knight’s service. The extent includes a fishery in the river (ripa). The lord of the said moiety may cut a cartload of underwood in a wood called ‘Kyngiswode’ in the parish of Wendovere on any day in the year at his pleasure, and carry it to Weston for his own use.
Date of death as above. Heirs as above, except that Denise is said to be still alive and one of the heirs of Edward.

SALOP. Inq. taken at Bruggenorth, 26 January, 50 Edward III.
Shrewsbury. A burgage tenement in the street called ‘Doggepoll,’ held of the king in chief as a free burgage and let at farm for 26s. 8d. yearly.
Franketon. Lands &c. worth 30s. yearly, and let at farm for that sum, held of the earl of Arundel, as of his castle and manor of Isabelles Castel, by socage.
He died on 4 September last. Elizabeth daughter of John son of John Lestraunge of Blakemere the son of Ankaretta one of his sisters, aged 2 years on 3 December last, Margaret wife of Fulk de Penbrugge, knight, daughter of Ida his second sister, aged 26 years and more, Nicholas, son of Nicholas de Longeford, knight, and Alice his third sister, aged 28 years and more, and Denise late the wife of Hugh de Cokeseye, his fourth sister, aged 40 years and more, are his next heirs.

SALOP. Inq. taken at Shrewsbury, 7 June, 50 Edward III.
Franketon. A moiety of the manor, held to him and the heirs male of his body, with remainder to the right heirs of William le Botiller, his father. It is held of Richard earl of Arundel by service of rendering 2s. yearly.
Shrewsbury. A messuage in Doggepol, held in form aforesaid of the king in chief as a free burgage of the town of Shrewsbury.
William le Botiller, lord of Wemme, father of the said Edward, purchased the said moiety of Franketon from Joan daughter of Richard de Franketon, to hold to him and Ela his wife and the heirs male of their bodies, with remainder to his right heirs. Richard Borrey of Shrewsbury granted the reversion of the messuage in Shrewsbury, held by Richard de Onioteshay and Joan his wife for the life of the said Joan, to the same William and Ela and the heirs male of their bodies, with remainder as above. Edward died without heir male of his body, so that the premises ought to remain to Elizabeth daughter of William le Botiller, wife of Robert le Ferrers, knight, as kinswoman and right heir of the aforesaid William le Botiller, her great-grandfather.
Edward died on 20 May, 49 Edward III. The said Elizabeth is 30 years of age and more.
Since his death the escheators have had possession of the premises and received the issues in the king’s name.

Great Melton. The manor, held of the king, as of the honor of Peverell, by service of homage and two suits yearly at the court of Hatfeld Peverell; and a toft, 1a. 1r. land, and 4s. rent of assise, held of the countess of Penbrok, service not known. He held the premises jointly with Eleanor his wife, who survives, by gift of Philip de Apethorp, parson of the church of Little Castirton, to them and their heirs and assigns.
He died on Monday after St. Mary Magdalen last. Thomas de Burton, knight, aged 40 years and more, is his son and heir.

ESSEX. Inq. taken at Neweport, Saturday the feast of the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin, 49 Edward III.
Wodehalle in Arkisdene. The manor, held of John duke of Lancaster by knight’s service, to wit, of the fee of Lylles. He held it jointly with the said Eleanor by gift of Philip, parson of the church of Little Castirton, to them and the heirs of their bodies, with remainder to his right heirs.

Whytyngton. A third part of the manor, held of the aforesaid duke by knight’s service and service of 3s. 4d. yearly.
He was a man of the realm of France and died without heir in the year 19 Edward III, for which cause the king took the premises into his hand as his escheat and granted them by charter to John de Coupeland and Joan his wife for their lives; and also granted by charter the reversion of those held of the duke of Lancaster to Ingelram de Coucy and Isabel his wife and the heirs of their bodies, and the reversion of the moiety of the manor of Ulvereston to the abbot of Fourneys and his successors. The said John de Coupeland and Joan had possession of the premises from the date of the grant until Wednesday before Easter last, when Joan died. After her death they were taken into the king’s hand, and those held of the duke were delivered to the said Ingelram and Isabel. The moiety of the manor of Ulvereston still remains in the king’s hand.
