104. HENRY DE COGGESHALE, knight, and JOAN HIS WIFE.
Writ after the death of the said Joan, 30 September, 49 Edward III.
SUFFOLK. Inq. (indented) taken at Newmarket, Thursday the feast of St. Luke, 49 Edward III.
The said Joan held:—
Ixning. The manor called ‘Well Hall’ (extent given).
She died on Friday before Michaelmas last. William her son, aged 18 years and more, is her heir.
Writ after the death of the said Joan, 30 September, 49 Edward III.

CAMBRIDGE. Inq. taken at Fordham, 30 October, 49 Edward III.
They held the following as of the right and inheritance of the said Joan:—
Fordham. A toft of 1 1/2a., 66a. arable, 1 1/2a. meadow, 30s. rents of free and customary tenants, and works and rents of six customary tenants, all formerly belonging to William de Welles, knight, Joan’s father, and held of the king in chief by knight’s service and service of 2s. 8d. yearly for sheriff’s aid; and 6a. land, held of Thomas de Felton, knight, by knight’s service and service of 2s. 1d. yearly.
Joan died on 27 September last, and Henry on 29 September. John (sic) their son, aged 18 years, is their next heir.

ESSEX. Inq. taken at Branketre, Wednesday after St. Denis, 49 Edward III.
Great Sampford. The manor (extent given), held by Joan in fee simple, one moiety of the king in chief by knight’s service, and the other moiety of the heirs of John le Roos, knight, by knight’s service, fractions of fees not known.
Est Tylleberri. The manor, held by Henry and Joan in fee simple, as of her right, together with the advowson of the church, of the heirs of the earl of Hereford by service of half a knight’s fee. They demised the manor, except the advowson, to William atte Wod, the elder, Joan his wife, and William atte Wod, the younger, for their lives, at a yearly rent of 50 marks, for which the lessees also have two boats to ply to and fro across the ferry (feriam) of Tylleberi aforesaid, because it belongs to the manor.
Death of Joan as in the first inquisition. William de Coggeshale, her son, aged 18 years at the feast of St. Margaret last, is her heir.

ESSEX. Inq. taken at Reileghe in the liberty of Rochford, Monday before St. Denis, 49 Edward III.
The said Henry held:—
Pakelesham. The manor, held of John Sudberri by knight’s service, fraction of fee not known, and by service of 2 marks yearly.
Hakewell. The manor, held of the king, as of the honor of Reileghe, by knight’s service, fraction of fee not known, except 6a. land which are held of the prior of Pritwell by service of 3s. 2d.; with the advowson of the church.
Ruggeweerde in Great Sutton. The manor, held of William Cosyn, as of his manor of Great Sutton, by service of 1 lb. cummin yearly.
Two years and more ago he enfeoffed by charter Simon, then bishop of London, William de Wauton, knight, John de Gyldesburgh, Thomas Berton, clerk, Roger Keterich and Thomas Aylmar of all the premises, and delivered unconditional seisin to them by John Clerk, his attorney. Being indebted to divers persons in 1000l. and more, and having many sons and daughters to maintain, as he lay in bed in the sickness whereof he died he begged and charged his feoffees to keep the manors in their own hands and collect the profits thereof for the payment of his debts and the help and maintenance of his children until they should have reasonably ordained for his said children’s estate; to sell, if necessary, whatever of the said manors they should think fit for the fulfilment of his will; and after the fulfilment of his will to enfeoff William his son of the residue, to hold in tail male, with successive remainders in tail male to Thomas his son and Thomas his brother, and with ultimate remainder to his own right heirs.
He died on Sunday after Michaelmas last. William de Coggeshale, aged 18 years at the feast of St. Margaret last, is his son and heir.

Codham. The manor, held of the lady de Neville by knight’s service, fraction of fee not known, and by service of a pair of gilt spurs or 6d.
Coggeshale. The manor, held of the abbot of Coggeshale by service of one knight’s fee.
Bemflete. The manor, held of the abbot of Westminster, as of his manor of Fanton, ……….; and the advowson of the church.
Sturemere. The manor, held of the heirs of Fraricus de Burnham by knight’s service, [amount not known]; and the advowson of the church.
Little Badewe. The manor, held of Nicholas [Burne]l by service of a pair of gilt spurs.
Scharnhalle in Schaldeforde. The manor, held of the heirs of John de Northwode, knight, by service of 10s. yearly.
Badewe. The advowson of the free chapel.
Scharnhall. The advowson of the free chapel.
Bockyngg. 30a. land, 3a. meadow and 30a. wood, held of the prior of Christ Church, Canterbury, by service of 14s. yearly.
Feringg. 50a. land, held of the abbot of St. John’s, Colchester, by service of 2s. yearly.
Schaldeford. 6a. land, held of ……….
Colcestre. 2 messuages, 6a. land and 2 1/2a. meadow.
Two years and more ago he enfeoffed the above bishop and others (last inquisition) of the premises (Thomas de Berton being described as rector of Schropham), and on his death-bed begged and charged them to pay his debts and maintain his children, as above, to sell the manor of Sturemere and the tenements in Colchester, and more if necessary, for the fulfilment of his will, and after the fulfilment thereof to enfeoff William his son of the manors of Codham, Coggeshale and Scharnhall, and the tenements in Bockyngge, Feryngge and Schaldeford, in tail male, with remainders as above (last inquisition), to enfeoff Thomas his son of the manor of Bemflete in tail male, with successive remainders in tail male to William his son and Thomas his brother, and with ultimate remainder to his right heirs, and to enfeoff Thomas his brother of the said manor of Badewe in tail male, with remainder to the right heirs of the same Thomas. After this feoffment he claimed nothing in the premises, and took no profits but by will of the feoffees.
Alesford. The manor, held of the king, as of the honor of Boloigne, by knight’s service, fraction of fee not known, and demised by the deceased to Geoffrey Dawe for life, with the stock then being thereon (described). The yearly value of the manor without the stock belongs to the king because the manor is held as above.

105. ELIZABETH LATE THE WIFE OF REYNOLD DE COBHAM, knight.

NORTHAMPTON. Inq. taken at Norhampton, Monday before St. Nicholas, 49 Edward III.
Bokebrok. The manor, held for life jointly with John de Ferariis, formerly her husband, in fee tail. It was acquired by John’s ancestors from Ranulf de Chestre, earl of Chester, to hold of him and his heirs by knight’s service. Thus it is so held of the honor of Chester by knight’s service.
She died on Monday after St. Laurence last. John (sic) de Ferariis, her son, aged 17 years and more, is her heir.

GLOUCESTER. Inq. (formerly indented) taken at Gloucester, 4 October, 49 Edward III.
Teynton and Bykenore. The manors, held of the king in chief by knight’s service jointly with John le Fereres, formerly her husband, in fee tail.
Beggesworth. A moiety of the manor, held of the earl of Gloucester by knight’s service by way of dower after the death of Fulk Lestraunge of Blakemere, formerly her husband.
She died on 7 August last. Robert son of John le Fereres, aged 17 years, is next heir of the said John and Elizabeth; and Elizabeth daughter of John Lestraunge of Blakemere brother and heir of the said Fulk, aged one year on the feast of St. Nicholas last, is Fulk’s next heir.

STAFFORD. Inq. (indented) taken at Stafford, 2 November, 49 Edward III.
Charteleye. The manor, held for life jointly with John de Ferrers, knight, her late husband, in fee tail, of the prince of Wales, as of the honor of Chester, by service of a fourth part of a knight’s fee.
She died on 7 August last. Robert de Ferrers, aged 18 years on 31 October last, son of the said John and Elizabeth, is her next heir.
SALOP. Inq. taken at Shrewsbury, 27 September, 49 Edward III.
Wrokwardyn. The manor (extent given), held of the king in chief by service of rendering 8l. yearly at the Exchequer by the hands of the sheriff.
Yeye. A toft and a carucate of land, held of the countess of March, of the manor of Staunton Lacy, by service of 1 lb. pepper yearly.
Hulton. A moiety of a carucate of land, held of the same countess, service not known.
All held for life jointly with Fulk Lestraunge, late her husband, son and heir of John Lestraunge of Blakemere, to them and the heirs of their bodies, by gift of the said John, the reversion belonging to the latter’s right heirs because Fulk and Elizabeth died without heir of their bodies.
Date of death as above. Elizabeth daughter of John Lestraunge son of the aforesaid John Lestraunge of Blakemere, aged one year on the feast of St. Nicholas last, is her heir to the premises.

Broghton. A moiety of the manor, held of the king in chief by knight’s service by way of dower after the death of Fulk Lestraunge of Blakemere, her late husband.
Date of death as last above. Elizabeth daughter of John Lestraunge of Blakemere, who (qui) died while a minor in the king’s wardship, is kinswoman and heir of the said Fulk, to wit, daughter of John Lestraunge son of John Lestraunge, the younger, knight, his brother. Her age is 1 3/4 years and 5 weeks and more.

He held the following jointly with Lucy his wife, who survives, by gift and feoffment of Roger Chaundos made by charter with the king’s licence to them and the heirs of their bodies, with reversion in default of such heirs to Roger and his heirs:—

BUCKINGHAM. Inq. taken at Wavyngdon, 20 October, [49 Edward III].
Wavyngdon. The manor, held in fee tail of the king in chief by knight’s service, by gift and feoffment of Hugh de Courtenay, earl of Devon, made with the king’s licence to her and Hugh her husband and the heirs of their bodies, with reversion to the earl and his heirs.
She died on Sunday before Michaelmas. She and her said husband died without heir of their bodies.

Honyton. The manor (extent given), held of the king in chief. WILTS. Inq. taken at Salisbury, 1 May, 49 Edward III.
Ambresbury. The manor, held of the earl of Salisbury by knight’s service. He held it in fee tail by gift and feoffment of Thomas de Newmarche, knight, John de Bussy and Hugh Cressy, with remainder to the right heirs of Nicholas de Cantilupo, knight, his grandfather.
He died on Sunday before Palm Sunday last without heir of his body. William de Cantilupo, knight, aged 40 years and more, is son and heir of the aforesaid Nicholas.

BUCKINGHAM. Inq. taken at Ayllesbury, Wednesday after St. Dunstan, 49 Edward III.
Midil Cleydon. The manor, held of the king, as of the honor of Peverel, by knight’s service.
Eselburgh. The manor, held of Sir William la Zouche of Haryngworth by knight’s service.
Nicholas de Cantilupo, knight, the deceased’s grandfather, enfeoffed Thomas de Neumarchee, knight, John Bussy and Hugh Cressy of the above manors in fee simple, and they granted them to Joan late the wife of the said Nicholas for life, with successive remainders to Nicholas son of William de Cantilupo, knight, and the heirs of his body, and to William brother of the said Nicholas son of William and the heirs of his body, and with remainder over to the right heirs of the aforesaid Nicholas the deceased’s grandfather. Nicholas son of William died without heir of his body; and after his death the said William de Cantilupo named in the writ, his brother, entered into the manors and died without heir of his body.
He died on Saturday after the Annunciation, 49 Edward III. Heir as above.

YORK. Inq. taken at York, in the castle, 22 June, 49 Edward III.
Ravensthorpt. The manor, and divers lands &c. in Ferham, Stanlay, Azerlowe, Brathwayt, Rydmer and York, held of divers lords by divers services, and not of the king in chief. On 6 August, 46 Edward III, he gave these by charter to Marmaduke Constable, knight, William de Aldeburgh, knight, William de Bradeston, parson of the church of Wynfeld, and John de Felicekyrk, parson of the church of Scotton in Lyndesay, their heirs and assigns. So he held no lands &c. in the county on the day of his death.
He died on 31 March last. Heir not known. The above feoffees continued their possession of the premises until after his death.
Endorsed: This inquisition was exemplified under the king’s great seal in 50 Edward III.

LINCOLN. Inq. (indented) taken at Ancastre, Tuesday in Easter week, 49 Edward III.
Lavyngton in the parts of Kesteven. The manor, held of the archbishop of York by knight’s service. Thomas de Neumarche, knight, John Bussy and Hugh de Cressy were enfeoffed thereof (with other manors in divers counties) by gift of Nicholas de Cantilupo, knight, the deceased’s grandfather, and re-enfeoffed thereof for life Joan late the wife of the said Nicholas, with successive remainders to Nicholas son of William son of the said Nicholas and the heirs of his body, and to William brother of the said Nicholas son of William and the heirs of his body. Nicholas son of William and William his brother died without heirs of their bodies, and by the form of the gift the manor (with the other manors) ought to revert to the right heirs of Nicholas de Cantilupo, knight.

LANCASTER. Inq. (indented) taken at Lancaster, Monday the morrow of Holy Trinity, 49 Edward III.
Moreholme. The manor, held of John duke of Lancaster by knight’s service and service of rendering 5d. yearly.
Wyresdale. A moiety of the manor, held of the same duke by knight’s service and service of rendering 2s. 6d. yearly.
Assheton. A moiety of the manor, held of the same duke by knight’s service and service of rendering 10d. yearly.
Whityngton. A third part of the manor, held of the same duke by knight’s service and service of rendering 3s. 4d. yearly.
She held the above for life by the king’s demise, the reversion belonging to Ingelram de Coucy, earl of Bedford, and Isabel his wife, and the heirs of their bodies.
Ulverston. A moiety of the manor, held of the abbot of Fourneys by knight’s service and service of rendering 30s. yearly. She held it for life by the king’s grant, the reversion belonging to the abbot and his successors by the king’s charter.
She died on Wednesday before Easter last.

Ulverston in Fourneys. A moiety of the manor, held as above. She held it for life by the king’s grant by charter to her and John her husband for the term of their lives. The said John is dead. By charter dated 29 November, 21 Edward III, the king granted the reversion of the moiety after the death of John and Joan to the abbot and convent of Fourneys and their successors.
Moreholme. The manor, held as above.
Wyresdale. A moiety of the manor, held as above.
Assheton. A moiety of the manor, held as above.
Whityngton. A third part of the manor, held as above.

Wynandermer. The manor with its members, to wit, the hamlets of Langeden, Loghrygge, Grismer, Hamelsate, Troutebek, Appilthwayt, Undermylnebek, Crosthwayt, Stirkeland Ketell and Hoton (extents given, including parks called ‘Hotonpark,’ ‘Troutebekpark’ and ‘le Calvegarth’).

Kyrkeby in Kendale. A moiety of the manor.
All held of the king in chief by service of a moiety of a fee of barony and by suit to the king’s county-court of Appelby. She held them for life by the king’s grant, with reversion as above.

He died on 3 December last. Elizabeth daughter of Thomas his son, aged 18 years and more, wife of John de Ippestones, knight, is his next heir in blood.

Caynho. The manor (extent given), h ld of the king in chief as parcel of the barony of Caynho. The extent includes 10 cottages which have newly fallen into the lord’s hands for lack of tenants owing to the pestilence.
He held no other lands &c. in the county except 10 knights’ fees by estimate, the tenants of which the jurors do not at present know.
He died on Thursday before Michaelmas last. Walter his son, aged 7 years by estimate, is his heir.

BUCKINGHAM. Inq. taken at Wynge, 2 April, 51 Edward III.
Lynchelade. A messuage in ruins, 120a. sandy arable sown only in alternate years, and 8a. meadow, whereof 7a. in the marsh are worth 4d. a year only, and 1a. is worth 7d. a year, held of the lord de Moubray, the lady le Latymer, Thomas Wake, knight, the elder, and William Lovet by knight’s service.

The said Margaret, kinswoman and heir of Thomas de la Ryvere, knight, Richard’s brother, died while a minor in the king’s wardship. The following lands &c. came to the king’s hands on the death of the said Thomas by reason of Margaret’s minority, and are still in the king’s hand, to wit:—
Dodyngton. A pasture with a small grove of wood within the close called ‘Bretonesdybbyng,’ containing 200a. land and 2a. wood. The said enclosure is held of the king in chief by service of a pair of gilt spurs or 6d.
Blatherwyk. A messuage, 80a. arable, 2a. meadow with a small grove of wood, and 2 marks yearly rent, held of Ralph Basset of Weldon, knight, by service of a twentieth part of a knight’s fee.
She died on Thursday before All Saints last. Sarah wife of John Garlek, sister of Richard her father, aged 50 years and more, and Margaret wife of Robert de Swilyngton the uncle, knight, daughter of Margaret sister of the said Richard, aged 26 years and more, are her kinswomen and heirs.

Mulleford by Lemyngton. A messuage and 200a. land, held of William de Farnhull by service of 1 lb. ……. yearly.
He held it by the courtesy of England after the death of Joan his wife, daughter of John de Grymstede, the younger, knight, who (que) held it to her and the heirs of her body, with remainder to the right heirs of Margery late the wife of John de Grymstede, the elder, knight, mother of the said John the younger. William son of William brother of Walter father of the said Margery, aged 40 years and more, is next heir of the said Margery. Joan died without heir of her body.
Ebbeford. The manor, tenure unknown. He held it in form aforesaid after the death of the said Joan, who held it to her and the heirs of her body, with remainder to the right heirs of John de Grymstede, the elder, father of John de Grymstede, the younger, her father. John Rous, son of Richard Rous the son of Ela the sister of John Grymstede, the elder, aged 8 years and more, is next heir of the said John the elder, and is in the king’s wardship by reason of the lands in Immere, co. Wilts, which he holds of the king in chief.
Lheepe and Eukesbury. A messuage and a carucate of land, held of Walter Foillet by service of 1 lb. wax or 6d. He held it in all respects as the manor of Ebbeford, and John Rous aforesaid is the heir.
He died on Wednesday, 17 October last. John de la Ryvere, his son, aged 1 year and more, is his heir.
WILTS. Inq. taken at Colyngbourne Kyngeston, 17 January, 49 Edward III.
Wotton Ryvers. The manor, held of the earl of Stafford, service not known.
Shaghe. A messuage and a carucate of land, held by knight’s service of the manor of Aulton Berners, which is in the hand of the bishop of Winchester by purchase.

Joan died without heir of her body; and the premises ought to revert to John Fitz Elys of La Whiteparish, kinsman and heir of John Fitz Elys of Brokenhurst, to wit, son of William son of John son of William father of Philip father of the said John.

RUTLAND. Inq. taken at Okham, the first Thursday in Lent, 49 Edward III.
Lyndon. The manor, held of the king in chief by knight’s service.
Tikencote. The manor, held of the honor of Huntyngdon, service not known.
Horn. The manor, tenure not known.
He ordained a writing of feoffment of the manors of Tikencote and Horn, but to whom the jurors know not. Nor do they know whether seisin was delivered by him to anyone by virtue of any feoffment. No attornment was made to anyone in his lifetime by any tenants of those manors, free or bond. He certainly died in seisin of part of the manor of Tikencote.
He died on Thursday before All Saints, 36 Edward III. John son of Oliver Danys, aged 22 years and more, is his heir.
From the time of his death until the lawful age of the said John son of Oliver the king had possession of the manor of Lyndon. Elizabeth his wife has had possession of the other two manors ever since his death, by what title the jurors know not, and has wasted the manor of Tikencote by felling trees to the value of 20l.

He died on Monday before St. Denis last without heir of his body. Margaret wife of John Fitz Waryn, daughter of the said Giles, aged 40 years and more, is Giles’s next heir. The said John and Margaret have issue between them.
