NORFOLK. Inq. (indented) taken at Holtmarket, Saturday after St Bartholomew, 16 Richard II.
He held the under-mentioned manor and lands in his demesne as of fee.
Welles. The manor (extent given, including pleas etc. of court with a leet held once a year).
Wyveton. 20a. arable, 40a. pasture, 21d. of the farm of lands in the lord‘s hands as escheat, 1a. meadow, 15s. rent of assize, a rent of 5 hens at Christmas, 10 winter and summer works, 15 autumn works, and pleas etc. of court with a leet held once a year.
All held of the king in chief, service not known.
He died on 4 July last. William his brother, aged 14 years on the morrow of St Matthew last, namely 22 September, is his heir.

SUFFOLK. Inq. (indented) taken at Henhowe, Tuesday before St Bartholomew, 16 Richard II.
He held the under-mentioned manors and lands etc. in his demesne as of fee.
Desenyng. The manor (extent given), held of the king in chief, by what service the jurors know not, but they say it is parcel of the honor of Gloucester. The extent includes two parks with deer, a fulling-mill in Cavenham, a pond called Cavenhampond with the reed-beds there, and pleas etc. of court into a leet held once a year.
Gayeslee. 14a. arable, held of John atte Lane, service not known.
Haverhull. The manor called Castel (extent given), held of the king in chief as parcel [of the honor] of Gloucester. The extent includes pleas etc. of court.

NORFOLK. Inq. taken at Shirynhammarket, Saturday before the Epiphany, 16 Richard II.
He held in his demesne as of fee two-thirds of the under-mentioned manor, and the reversion of a third part thereof which Joan late the wife of Ralph Basset of Drayton, knight, holds for life in dower by an assignment made by the king’s writ in Chancery, and which after her death ought to descend to the said Thomas as next heir of the said Ralph Basset, knight, to wit, son of Hugh son of Ralph, late earl, son of Margaret sister of Ralph Basset father of Ralph father of the said Ralph Basset, knight.
Shiryngham. The manor, held of the king in chief, as of the honor of Giffard, service not known.
Date of death and heir as above.
John Wynter, late escheater, received the issues and profits of the said two-thirds of the manor, which were in the king’s hand on account of the death of the above-mentioned Ralph Basset of Drayton, knight, who held them of the king in chief on the day of his death and by reason of the minority of the said Thomas, late earl, from the time of the death of the said Thomas until 24 October last, and will answer to the king therefor.

He was seised in his demesne as of fee of 5l. 0s. 6d. (sic) annual quitrent in the city, as follows:
The Ropery, 26s. 8d. from a tenement called Beaurepair held by Agnes late the wife of Richard Preston; 20s. from a tenement formerly of Hermann Skipper, now held by the same Agnes; 24s. from a tenement opposite the door of All Hallows the Great, held by Thomas Pykot; and 6s. 8d. from a tenement called le Home, held by William Wytton.
Cowereslane. 24s. from a tenement held by William Brykles.
The said rent is held of the king in burgage, as is the whole city of London.

He held the under-mentioned lands etc. in his demesne as of fee because long before his death Ralph Basset of Drayton, whose heir he was, died seised thereof in his demesne as of fee, and they descended to him as kinsman and next heir of the said Ralph, to wit, son of Hugh son of Ralph son of Margaret sister of Ralph father of Ralph father of the said Ralph Basset.
He also died seised of the under-mentioned court, leets and rents.
Turvey. 20a. land in the park of Newenton Blosmevill, held directly of John Trailly, knight; 5a. land in the same park, held of the king in chief by knight’s service; 50a. land, held as parcel of the manor of Newenton Blosmevill of John Trailly, knight, by knight’s service.

He held the under-mentioned manors of Esington and Little Brykhull in his demesne as of fee.
He was seised of the under-mentioned rents and leets.
He was seised of the under-mentioned manor of Newenton Blosmevill and manors of Clifton called Wakes and Botylers in his demesne as of fee because long before his death, Ralph Basset of Draiton was seised of the same in his demesne as of fee, and they descended to him as kinsman and next heir of the said Ralph, to wit, son of Hugh son of Ralph son of Margaret sister of Ralph father of Ralph father of the said Ralph Basset.

He was seised in his demesne as of fee of the under-mentioned manors and rent.
Thornbury. The manor, with its members, to wit, Oldebury, Kyngton, Moreton Falefeld and Mars (extent given), held of the king in chief as parcel of the honor of Gloucester, service not known. The extent includes a free borough of Thornbury, rents of assize amounting to 34l. 5s. and no more because of annuities of 60s. 8d. granted for life to Robert Wryght and Thomas Turffyn respectively by letters patent of the said Thomas, late earl, a rent called ‘Petruspeny’, a view of frankpledge and a court of the manor, a court of the borough with the profit of a market held in the borough every Saturday, a view of frankpledge held twice a year at Oldeland, to wit, at Easter and Michaelmas, and a court held at the manor of Thornbury every three weeks called the court of fees of the honor of Gloucester.
Gloucester. A rent worth 10s. yearly and a court held every three weeks, held of the king in chief, service not known.
Ryndecombe. The manor (extent given), with certain lands etc. in Sarney, held of the king in chief by knight’s service. The extent includes a court.

MARCH OF WALES ADJACENT TO GLOUCESTER Inq. taken at Neuport, 28 August, 16 Richard II.
He was seised in his demesne as of fee of the under-mentioned castle, town and lordship etc.
Neuport. The castle and town, and the lordship of the commote of Wenllok with its members, to wit, Stowe, Rempny, Dyveles, Penkarn and Deffren Ebboth, together with the manor, lordship and forest of Maghan annexed to the said lordship of Wenllock (extents given), held of the king in chief, service not known. The extents include 13l. 16s. 3d. rents of assize of the free borough in the said town, issues of the borough there worth 10l. yearly, a fishery of Uske, pleas etc. of the hundred there, and of the commote of Wenllok, and lands, rents, services and courts in the aforesaid members of the lordship.

KENT. Inq. taken at Tonebregge, Wednesday before St Lawrence, 16 Richard II.
He was seised of the under-mentioned castle at Tonebregge, manor of Ealdynge and tenement in Edynbregg in his demesne as of fee.
Hugh late earl of Stafford, his father, was seised in his demesne as of fee of the under-mentioned manor of Bradstede and granted it to John de Frenyngham for life at a rent of 40 marks yearly. After the death of the said Hugh the rent was released by Thomas, the now deceased earl, to the said John de Frenyngham, who is still living and occupies the manor as above. So the said Thomas did not die seised of the manor or rent aforesaid.
Tonebregge. The castle with its members, to wit, Dacheherst and Hadlo, held of the archbishop of Canterbury by homage and service of being the archbishop‘s steward on the day of his translation. The value of the premises is 20l. yearly and no more, because the manor of Dacheherst is charged with payment of 10 marks yearly to the prior and convent of Tonebregge and 3s. 10d. yearly to the prior of Rochester.
Ealdynge. The manor (extent given), held of the king in chief by homage and service of half a knight’s fee, as of the honor of Clare. The extent includes a water-mill at Twyforde.
Edynbregg. A tenement, held of the abbot of Westminster by service of a pair of gilt spurs yearly.
Bradstede. The manor, held of the archbishop of Canterbury by homage and service of being the archbishop‘s butler on the day of his translation.
Date of death as above. Heir as above, who will be 15 years of age on the feast of St Luke next.

Blecchynglegh. The manor, with the borough and other appurtenances, held of the king in chief, as parcel of the honor of Clare, by knight’s service and a rent of 5s. called ‘parkeselvere’ to be paid to the sheriff yearly for the king’s use.
Tiecheseie. 68a. arable and 72a. meadow, held of the king in chief as parcel of the honor of Gloucester.
Camerwell. 20a. arable and 18s. rent of assize of free tenants, held of the king in chief.

He held the under-mentioned borough of Petresfeld etc. and manor of Cornhampton on the day of his death.
He held the under-mentioned parcel of the hamlet of Upclatford in his demesne as of fee.
Petresfeld. The borough, and a market held therein every Saturday together with two fairs at the feasts of St Peter and St Andrew, held of the king in chief, as parcel of the honor of Gloucester, by knight’s service; and also four hamlets pertaining to the said borough, to wit, Mapelderham, Weston, Nutstede and Shete, held of the king as above, together with the pleas and perquisites of court pertaining to the said borough and hamlets.
Cornhampton. The manor, held of Isabel de Sancto Johanne by knight’s service.
Upclatford. Parcel of the hamlet, tenure not known.

Huntingdon. The advowson of the priory of St Mary.
St Neots. The advowson of the priory, by virtue of which he, his heirs or assigns, may grant to whomsoever they please a corrody in the said priory, to wit, as much as any monk of the priory takes or ought to take, whenever such corrody falls vacant. The corrody is worth 100s. yearly.
Stylton, Walton, Folkesworth, Wynnewyk and Sautre. One leet of the said townships, held once a year at Sautre.
All held of the king in chief, as of the honor of Gloucester, by knight’s service.
He held no other lands etc. or advowsons in the counties of Cambridge and Huntingdon on the day of his death.

STAFFORD. Inq. (indented) taken at Stone, Monday after St Matthew, 16 Richard II.
He was seised in his demesne as of fee of the under-mentioned castle of Stafford, manors of Bradley and Madeley under Lyme, two-thirds of the manor of Hyde, advowson of the priory of Stone, fishpool called Kyngespole and messuages etc. in Stafford.
He was also seized of the remaining under-mentioned reversions, knights’ fees etc.
Stafford. The castle (extent given) with the advowson of the free chapel therein. The extent includes a park.
Bradley. The manor (extent given) with the advowson of the church thereof, and with the members annexed thereto, to wit, Bilyngton, Wolaston, Shradycot, Longenorle, Stretton, Dunston, Copenhale, and Castelfordbrugg, with the advowson of the church and of the hospital of St John the Baptist. The extent includes a marsh called le Spitelpole and a pasture called Thevesdich.
In the above castle and manor there are rents of assize of 32l. 13s. 2 1/2d. and 6 barbed arrows, and a view of frankpledge held twice a year at Castelfordbrugg, with pleas and perquisites of a court held there every three weeks.
Hyde. Two-thirds of the manor (extent given, including two-thirds of a park).
Madeley under Lyme. The manor (extent given). The extent includes a fulling-mill, two parks, the lesser of which is called Levereshede, a several pasture called Netherstedehey, rents of assize of 17l. 13s. 8d. in the said manor with the hamlet of Radewode, a view of frankpledge held twice a year, and a court held every three weeks.
Stone. The advowson of the priory.
Norton on les Mores. The manor, with the hamlet of Grotton and 10 marks rent in Tyllyngton, held for life by Nicholas de Stafford, knight, by way of fee, by grant of Hugh late earl of Stafford, with the late king’s licence, at a rent of 4 marks yearly payable to the said earl Hugh and his heirs. The late earl Thomas was seised of the said rent of 4 marks on the day of his death, and the reversion of the manor, hamlet and rent of 10 marks when it falls in, pertains to his heirs.
All the above are held of the king in chief, except the hamlet of Grotton and certain lands etc. in the manor of Norton which are held of the lord de Audeley, as of his manor of Endon, service not known.
Kyngespole. A fishpool so called, under the town of Stafford, with a water-mill at the head thereof, held of the king in chief by payment of a fee-farm of 2 marks yearly at the Exchequer by the hands of the sheriff.
Stafford. 3 messuages and 3 tofts in the borough and the reversion of a messuage in Stafford held for life by Nicholas Raff and Elizabeth his wife, by grant of Hugh late earl, held of the king in free burgage.
Cotonothehull by Stafford. A toft with a carucate of land, held of the prior of St Thomas by Stafford, service not known.
Burton. A messuage and the reversion of the hamlets of Dudyngton and Stalbrok held for life by Giles del Hyde by grant of Hugh late earl, held of the lord of Wemme by knight’s service.
Blore and Grendon. Two knights’ fees, held by Henry de Braylesford, knight.
(Unspecified.) One knight’s fee, formerly held by the earl of Lincoln.
Edlaxston. One knight’s fee, held by Nicholas de Langeford.
Tene. One knight’s fee, held by the heirs of Ralph Basset of Sapcote.
Hopton and Tene. Two knights’ fees, held by William Ipstones and Maud his wife.
Madeley Alfowe. One knight’s fee, held by the heirs of Ralph Basset of Madeley.

Middle (Media) Rydeware. A fourth part of a knight’s fee, held by the heirs of John Cameray.
Covene. One knight’s fee, lately held by Ralph Covene.
Benton. A fifth part of a knight’s fee, held by the heirs of Richard de Hyntes.
Richardescote. A moiety of a knight’s fee, held by Humphrey de Stafford, knight.
All the above fees he held of the king in chief.
He also died seised as of right and of fee of all the under-mentioned reversions, lands and advowson, which descended to him after the death of Ralph Basset of Drayton as kinsman and heir of the said Ralph.
Tameworth. The reversion of 6 marks rent after the death of John Clyfton, to whom Ralph de Basset of Drayton demised the same for life. The rent is held of the king in chief, services not known.
Lichefeld. A messuage.
Patyncham. A messuage.
Walshale. An enclosed plot of land, wood and pasture called Cleyhongre, which Ralph Basset purchased from William Colesson; a carucate of land lying between the town of Walshale and the park thereof called le Wastes, which the said Ralph purchased from a man of Walshale; and a plot of land called le Conyngere.
Drayton. The advowson of a chantry of five chaplains to celebrate in the church there for the soul of the said Ralph de Basset and his heirs.
Of whom the above [messuages], lands and advowson are held the jurors know not.
Walshale. Three parcels of land containing a carucate and a half lying within the park of Walshale, purchased from William Coleson, Thomas Hexstall and John Hogyn, tenure not known.
Drayton. 8 tofts, 2 carucates of land and 40a. wood called Jonesclos, which the aforesaid Ralph purchased from John atte Lee, held of the manor of Drayton Basset, services not known; and a messuage which the said Ralph had by purchase of a bondman of his of the manor of Drayton aforesaid, held of the said manor, service not known.
Tamworth. A messuage which the said Ralph purchased from Magot de Botery, tenure not known.
Pakynton. The reversion of the manor, which Thomas de Aston, knight, holds for life by demise of the said Ralph, tenure not known.

The knights’ fees stated to have been held by the said Thomas are the same (apart from differences in spelling etc.) as those specified in the above Staffordshire inquisition no 214, with the following exceptions:
Blore and Grendon. Two fees are said to be held by John Basset, knight.
Salt. The fee is said to be held at present, not lately, by Ives de Salt and others.
Milwych. The fee is said to be held by the heirs of Ralph Okovere.
Stanton and Weston. An entry of half a knight’s fee in those places held by William de Weston is inserted after the entry of the fee in Walton.
Halghton and Offelay. The three fees are said to be held by the heirs of Humphrey de Halghton.
Wilbryghton. The fee is said to be held by Henry de Wylbryghton.
