Writ (missing).
HEREFORD. Inq. Tuesday after St. Hilary, 4 Edward III.
Wystanston. Two parts of 48a. land and of 10a. meadow, held of the king in chief, by service of rendering 6d. yearly at the king’s exchequer by the hands of the sheriff of Hereford.
Ambreleye. Two parts of a messuage, of 90a. land, and of 10a. moor and pasture, held of Maud de Preston by service of 10s. yearly.
Sutton. Two parts of 60a. land, and of 20a. meadow, and 5s. 6d. rent of assize, held of the lord of Mauwerdyn by service of 8s. yearly.
Houmfreyston. Two parts of 39s. yearly rent of free tenants, held of the king in chief by service of rendering 5s. yearly at the king’s exchequer, by the hands of the sheriff of Hereford.
Saint Mary Birches. Two parts of 12s. rent, held of the king in chief by service of paying 12d. yearly at the king’s exchequer, by the hands of the same sheriff.
Richard son of Thomas de Monemewe, kinsman of the aforesaid Richard, aged 18 years at the feast of SS. Philip and James last, is his next heir.

STAFFORD. Inq. 24 February, 5 Edward III.
Rouley. The manor (extent given), held of the king in chief by service of 16s. 4d. yearly, to be rendered at the king’s exchequer by the hands of the sheriff of Stafford, and by service of rendering 10l. 6s. 8d. to Isabella, queen of England, for her life, and after her death no more than the ancient farm, viz.—16s. 4d.

GLOUCESTER. Inq. Friday after the Purification, 5 Edward III.
Upton St. Leonard’s by Gloucester. A messuage, lands, rent, &c. (extent given), held of the king in chief by service of rendering 20s. at the king’s Barton by Gloucester.

CAMBRIDGE. Inq. 15 February, 5 Edward III.
Gransete. The manor (extent given); which manor was lately of William son of Edmund Trussel, by the grant of Thomas late earl of Lancaster, to hold for life, and was taken by the late king Edward II, into his hands for certain causes, but afterwards restored to the said William by the present king to hold for life as aforesaid; and afterwards the king for certain other causes, caused it to be taken into his hands, and by the procurement of Roger de Mortuo Mari, late earl of March, gave it to the said Richard de Monemeuwe, to hold to him and his heirs for ever: it is held of the king as of the honour of Wygemor, which was of the said Roger, by service of a knight’s fee.

BEDFORD. Inq. 20 August, 5 Edward III.
Mepertesale. A messuage, lands and rent (extent given), held of the king in chief, by service of finding in the king’s army, for forty days at his own charges, a man armed with a hide corslet (lorica cruda), iron cap, lance and sword, and a horse unpriced (sine precio).
Felmersham. 38s. yearly rent, held of the inheritance of the heir of John de Hasting by service of half a knight’s fee, and suit at the court of Barton.
Great Stondon. 16a. arable, held of William Breton by service of 4d. yearly and foreign service, and service of two parts of 1lb. of pepper yearly.
Mepertesale. 18a. land, held of John atte Hoo by service of 18d.
John his son, aged 24 years and more, is his next heir.
Memorandum that of the aforesaid tenements in Mepertesale, which is on the borders of cos. Bedford and Hertford, the said Robert held 3 cottages and 9a. land in the aforesaid county of Hertford which are extended in the lands and tenements as above.

ESSEX. Inq. Tuesday after All Saints, 5 Edward III.
Foxherd. The manor, jointly acquired with Hilary his wife, who still survives, whereof the reversion after her death ought to remain to Andrew, son of the said Robert, and his heirs by fine levied in the king’s court, held in chief of Elizabeth de Burgo as of the honour of Clare by service of a quarter of a knight’s fee.
John his son, aged 32 years and more, is his next heir.
SUFFOLK. Inq. 15 October, 5 Edward III.
Aketon. The manor, held jointly with Hilary his wife, of the king in chief, as of the honour of Hatfeld Peverel, by service of two parts of a knight’s fee, by the grant of James de Bures and John de Bures by fine levied in the king’s court, to hold to the said Robert and Hilary and the heirs of their bodies, with remainder to Andrew son of the said Robert, and his heirs.
Aketon and Ketilberston. A messuage, land and rent (extent given), similarly held by the like grant, by service of a moiety of a knight’s fee, with remainder to the aforesaid Andrew and his heirs.
Lavenham, Meldyngg, Cokefeld, Preston and Monks Illeghe. Two messuages and two carucates of land, held for his life, by the grant of Robert Clerbek, of John de Veer, earl of Oxford, and the prior of Christ Church, Canterbury, by divers services at present unknown, by another fine levied in the king’s court, with remainder to Michael his son, and his heirs.
Great Waldyngfeld, Little Waldyngfeld, Meldyngg, Melford, Aketon, Sudbery and Neuton. Three messuages, lands, rent, &c. (extent given), held jointly with the aforesaid Hilary, of John de Mounteny, knight, by service of a quarter of a knight’s fee, by fine levied in the king’s court, of the grant of Edmund le Botiller, to hold to them and the heirs of their bodies, with remainders successively, to the aforesaid Andrew, and to Michael and William, his brothers, and the heirs of their bodies, and to the right heirs of the said Robert for ever.
Great Bures, Wyston, Asyngton and Little Cornerthe. Eight messuages, three mills, lands, rent, &c. (extent given), held for life of Thomas de Ponyngge, knight, by service of 20l. (?) yearly, by the grant of the aforesaid Edmund le Botiller, by fine levied in the king’s court, with remainder to the aforesaid Andrew and Alice his wife, and to the heirs of the body of the said Andrew, with remainders successively to Michael and William, brothers of the said Andrew, and the heirs of their bodies, and to the right heirs of the said Robert for ever.

366. HILARY, LATE THE WIFE OF ROBERT DE BURES.

SUFFOLK. Inq. 14 January, 5 Edward III.
Aketon. A messuage within the motte (motam) of the manor with free entry and exit, held for her life; which messuage with the manor she sometime held, jointly enfeoffed with the said Robert, of the king in chief, as of the honour of Hatfeld Peverel, by service of two parts of a knight’s fee, by the grant of James de Bures and John de Bures by fine levied in the king’s court with the king’s licence, to hold to them and the heirs of their bodies, with remainder to Andrew, son of the said Robert, and his heirs. The said Robert and Hilary died without heir of their bodies, so that the said messuage will remain as above to the said Andrew; and the said Hilary after the said Robert’s death, surrendered the manor, except the said messuage, and all the lands, &c. which she held after the said Robert’s death in the counties of Suffolk and Essex as of the right of the said Andrew, to the said Andrew and his heirs, rendering 60l. yearly to her for life, for the same.
She died 13 December in the above year; and the said Andrew is aged 30 years and more.

367. WILLIAM AVENEL.

CAMBRIDGE. Inq. Tuesday after St. Nicholas, 5 Edward III.
Gamelyngeye. The manor (extent given), including a market on Tuesday in each week, held to himself and the heirs of his body of the heir of Robert son of Walter, a minor and in the king’s wardship, by service of half a knight’s fee.
Wynepol. A manor (extent given), held of John le Bere of Elyngton by knight’s service.
He died on 7 November last. John his son, aged 23 years on the feast of the Purification last, is his next heir.

368. ELEANOR, SOMETIME THE WIFE OF ROBERT DE BRUS, whom Richard le Waleys married.
Writ concerning lands held in dower of the inheritance of the said Robert, which, by the forfeiture of Robert his son and heir, came to the late king’s hands, 8 September, 5 Edward III.
ESSEX. Inq. Monday after St. Edward, King and Confessor, 5 Edward III.
Wrytele. A third part of the manor (extent given), including a park, held by the said Richard and Eleanor as of the dower of the said Eleanor.
Hathfeld Regis. A third part of the manor (extent given), similarly held.
King Edward II granted the aforesaid manors to Humphrey de Bohun, sometime earl of Hereford and Essex, and to Elizabeth his wife, and the heirs of their bodies, to hold with the dower when it should fall in, which the said Eleanor held after the death of Robert de Bruys, sometime her husband; and the said Richard and Eleanor afterwards attorned to the said Humphrey. John de Bohun, now earl of Hereford and Essex, son and heir of the said Humphrey and Elizabeth, holds the said manors in their entirety of the king in chief by service of a knight’s fee, so that the said Richard and Eleanor held nothing of the king in chief, as of her dower on the day she died.
HUNTINGDON. Inq. 10 November, 5 Edward III.
Caldecote. A third part of the manor (extent given), held in dower by the said Richard and Eleanor, of the abovementioned inheritance, of the king as of the honour of Huntyngdon, service unknown.
The same Richard and Eleanor took yearly 18s. 11d. rent from the men of the town of Huntingdon, and 2s. from a certain plot in the same town, by reason of the same dower, and they are held of the aforesaid honour.

369. JOHN SUET of Thurleston.
Writ, 10 October, 5 Edward III.
DERBY. Inq. Thursday before St. Martin, 5 Edward III.
Thurleston, Aylwaston and Ambaston. A capital messuage, lands and rent, held jointly with Alice his wife, who still survives, of the heir of Thomas Bardolf, a minor and in the king’s wardship, and to their heirs lawfully begotten between them, by service of half a knight’s fee and suit at the said heir’s court at Shelford every three weeks.
Aylwaston. 11s. rent jointly held as above of Anker son of Ralph de Frecheville by service of 12d. yearly.
Alston. 24a. arable and 1a. meadow, held of the abbot of Chester by service of 13s. 4d., and suit of court at the said abbot’s manor of Weston every three weeks.
All the aforesaid lands and tenements are charged to Emma, mother of the said John Suet, by the assignment of the same John by way of dower, in 36s. yearly.
Edmund his son, aged 10 years and more, is his next heir.

370. ROGER DE MUSSENDEN of Coleworth.

NORTHAMPTON. Inq. 2 July, 5 Edward III. (defective.)
Colworth. A moiety (extent given), including a little water-mill called ‘le Shotmilne’ held of the king in chief, by service of half a knight’s fee, and rendering 20s. yearly for the ward of the king’s castle of Wyndesore, viz.—3s. 4d. every six weeks; which (half knight’s fee) is in the king’s hand, as parcel of the fees which the late King Edward I acquired from Henry de Pynkenye; and a little manor (extent given), including a piece of meadow called ‘le Hamme,’ held [of the king in chief] by knight’s service; and Hugh de Mussenden, son of the aforesaid Roger, holds for his life certain land there of the same fee, which certain tenants (names given) hold in bondage, with their suits, services, and issue (sequelis), of the said Roger’s grant, rendering yearly to him and his heirs a rose during the said Hugh’s life.
Roger his son, aged 40 years and more, is his next heir.

Kyngessutton. The manor (extent given), including meadow land liable to inundation by the water of the river Charewell, a fishery, and the hundred of Sutton, held for life of the heirs of the earl of Salisbury, whose inheritance is now in the hand of the earl of Warenne, by service of a sore sparrowhawk or 2s. yearly, by fine levied in the king’s court in 8 Edward II, with remainder to Thomas, late earl of Lancaster, for his life, and further remainder to Robert de Holond and Maud his wife and the heirs begotten between them.
The said Maud, aged 40 years, is her next heir by virtue of the fine aforesaid.

373. ROBERT DE MALO LACU.
Writ, 22 March, 5 Edward III.
YORK. Inq. Saturday the eve of Holy Trinity, 5 Edward III.
Hexthorp and Rosyngton. The manors (extent given), including 12s. 6d. yearly rent of bondmen at Balby which is of the appurtenances of the said manor of Hexthorp, held for life, of the grant of Peter de Malo Lacu, deceased, with remainder to the right heirs of the said Peter; after whose death Peter his son and heir granted the reversion of the said manors to Robert son of the aforesaid Robert, for life, with remainder to the right heirs of the same Peter; by reason of which grant the said Robert the father attorned to the said Robert his son for the said manors, which Robert the son still survives. The manors are held of the king in chief, by service of an eighth part of two grand serjeanties, which are for finding for the king two armed men in his war of Wales, for forty days, if there shall be war there.

374. ROGER DE REYHAM.

KENT. Inq. Monday after Holy Trinity, 5 Edward III.
Reyham or Ren [ham?]. A messuage, 50a. land and 10a. wood, held in gavelkind of the king, as of his manor of Middelton, by service of 4s. 8d. yearly at Easter and Michaelmas, and 1d. at Midsummer, and by two attendances at the court of Middleton yearly; and the said tenements are charged with 2s. yearly to John Bakechilde, and 2s. 6d. to John Elys and other lords.
He held no other lands &c. in the county, for the manor of Bedemannegore, which was in his possession, was and is of the inheritance of Margery, late his wife, and is held in gavelkind of the king’s manor of Osprenge, by suit of court at the same manor every three weeks, and the greatest part of the demesne lands of the same manor is held of the archbishop of Canterbury and divers other lords by divers services; and ten days before he died he granted to Robert de Sharstede and William de Swanton and their heirs, the manor of Reyhamme, which is held in gavelkind, of the manor of Middelton aforesaid, by service of 31s. 4d. and 32 1/2lb. of cheese yearly, and by two attendances at the court of Middelton; and the said manor is charged with 4 marks yearly to Stephen de Cobbeham, the elder. And the said Roger ten days before he died granted to the said William for his life, with remainder to the heirs of the said Roger for ever, a rent of 38s. 6d. and 6 bushels of salt, in Est Ore and West Ore by Faversham, which are held of the heir of John de Sancto Johanne by knight’s service, and the same fee is assigned to Alice, late the wife of the same John, in dower.
Beatrice, the wife of Henry de Thornton, his sister, aged 30 years and more, is his next heir.

CORNWALL. Inq. 15 April, 5 Edward III.
Rescradec. Two knights’ fees and a half of the fee of Mortain, held of lady Isabella, queen of England, then lady of Cornwall, as of the honour of the castle of Launcetton, then in the said queen’s hand, and they are now held of the king by reason of the said county being in the king’s hand; which fees Gervase de Bray held of the said Henry in demesne by homage and by fealty and knight’s service.
Pengelly. A Cornish acre of land, held of the same queen of the manor of Helyston by service of 12d. yearly, and now of the king by the same service.
Maen. Half a knight’s fee, held of Richard de Campornulphi by knight’s service.
Rosneython. The lordship of a quarter of a knight’s fee, held of Otto de Bodrygan by knight’s service, which Roger de Reskemmer holds in demesne by homage and fealty.
Trevill. A quarter of a knight’s fee held of William de Feres, for which William de Trevilla renders 4s. yearly.
Kelygrin. The manor held of the prior of Bodminne in socage.
Rescasiwyt. The hamlet held of the heir of Odo de Siccavilla in socage.
Talcarn. The hamlet held of Otto de Botrigan in socage.
Polgrun. Two Cornish acres of land held of Roger de Reskemmer in socage.
Trewyn. Half a Cornish acre of land held of Thomas Lercediakene in socage.
Trewyn and Trevak (?) An acre and a half of land, held in socage of the prior of Bodmine.
Stranghille. Half an acre of land, held of Oliver de Carminou by knight’s service.

Chesham. Two messuages, three parts of a virgate of land, and a quarter of a virgate, viz.—20a. arable, held in his demesne as of fee, which were sometime of Alexander Daniel and Alexander de la Graunge, who held them of the king in chief, by service of 5s. 2d. yearly to be paid by the hands of the sheriff; and 2 messuages, 10a. land, and 3a. wood in Chesham, 10s. rent in Aumondesham, and 16s. rent in Briddesthorne, held, to him and the heirs of his body, of Ralph de Wedon by service of 5s. yearly.
Iselamstede Cheyny. 10s. rent, held of Alexander de Cheyny by service of a rose.
Weston by Olneye. 13s. 4d. yearly rent, held of John de Hiltesdon by service of 1d. yearly.

Wykyngeston. 48l. 8s. rent, held of the grant of Robert de Chedeworth and William de Parco, by fine levied in the king’s court, to hold to him and the heirs of his body with remainder to John de Veer and his heirs, of Henry de Bello Monte in chief, ‘freely without any other service.’
The said John de Veer, aged 18 years, is his next heir.
MIDDLESEX. Inq. 29 April, 5 Edward III.
Kensington. The manor (extent given), held of the king in chief, with other manors &c., by service of two knights’ fees and a half, of the gift of the abovesaid Robert and William, to hold to him and the heirs of his body, with remainder to John de Veer and his heirs, by virtue of a fine levied in the king’s court.

ESSEX. Inq. Saturday the morrow of the Invention of the Holy Cross, 5 Edward III.
Great Benteleygh and Earl’s Colne. The manors held in fee tail, to him and the heirs of his body, by the king’s licence, with remainder to John de Veer and his heirs, by fine levied in the king’s court, of the king in chief as members of the earldom of Oxford by knight’s service.

Hengham. The castle and manor (extent given), held of the king in chief by knight’s service, viz.—among the other [members] of the earldom of Oxford, which are all held of the king by service of two knights’ fees and a half.
Gelham. The manor (extent given), held of the king in chief by service of 10l. yearly of blanch farm at the king’s exchequer.
Earl’s Bumste. The manor (extent given), held of the king in chief by knight’s service, as member of the earldom of Oxford, which is wholly held of the king by service of two knights’ fees and a half.
The said Robert de Veer held the aforesaid manors as in fee tail, to him and the heirs of his body by the king’s licence, with remainder to John de Veer and his heirs, by fine levied in the king’s court.

Fyngre. The manor (extent given), held as in fee tail, to him and the heirs of his body, by the king’s licence, of the enfeoffment of Robert de Cheddeworth and William de Parco with remainder to John de Veer and his heirs by fine levied in the king’s court, of the king in chief by serjeanty, viz.—serving in the queen’s chamber, as chamberlain, on the day of her coronation, receiving for his fee as is fitting (pro feodo suo percipiendo sicut decet).
Dunham. The manor (extent given), including a park, held as in fee tail, as above mentioned, of the king in chief by knight’s service, rendering 10s. yearly at the castle of Dover; and 200a. arable held of the earl of Hereford, the abbot of Waltham, and John de Grey, rendering to them 4s. yearly.
Duddynghurst. The manor (extent given), held as in fee tail, as abovementioned, of the king in chief as member of the earldom of Oxford; and 80a. arable, similarly held of the prior of Bermundeseye, rendering 30s. yearly.

The manors (extents given), held to him and the heirs of his body of the king in chief by knight’s service, of the gift of Robert de Cheddeworth and William de Parco by the king’s licence, by a fine levied in the king’s court on the octave of Holy Trinity, 4 Edward III, with remainder to John de Veer and his heirs.

The manors (extents given), including a park of 200a. in Laveham Overhalle, held to himself and the heirs of his body of the king in chief, as parcel of the earldom of Oxford, by the enfeoffment of the abovesaid Robert and William, by fine levied in the king’s court by the king’s licence, with remainder to John de Veer and his heirs.
Cokfeud. The manor (extent given), held to him and the heirs of his body of the abbot of St. Edmund’s by service of half a knight’s fee, by another fine levied in the same court by the enfeoffment of the abovesaid Robert and William, with remainder to John de Veer and his heirs.
He died on 17 April last. Heir as above.
BERKS. Inq. 2 May, 5 Edward III.
Langeleye and Bradeleye. Two messuages and two carucates of land, held for his life of the king in chief, as member of his barony of Bulbek, by service of a quarter of a knight’s fee; for the said earl lately gave the said lands and tenements to the abovesaid Robert and William, by the king’s licence, who granted them to the said earl and the heirs of his body, with remainder to John le (sic) Veer, son of Authulsus (sic) de Veer and his heirs.

Chesham. The manor (extent given), including a close called a park in the middle of which is the capital messuage, 13s. 4d. ‘dyseyn silver’ yearly, as well from the earl’s tenants as from those of John Syffrewast, and 25s. called ‘shireveschott,’ held to himself and the heirs of his body of the enfeoffment of the abovesaid Robert and William, by fine levied in the king’s court, with remainder to John de Veer, of the king in chief by service of a knight’s fee.
Calverton. The manor (extent given), including a several fishery, a moiety of the toll of the weekly market and of the yearly fair, and a payment called ‘shireveschotte,’ held by the aforesaid fine of the king in chief by service of a knight’s fee; out of which, together with the extent of Chesham, he paid 10 marks yearly at the king’s exchequer.
Wytchirche. The manor (extent given), including toll of a market on Monday in each week, a pair of gilt spurs at Michaelmas price 6d., a sheaf of corn and another of oats called ‘cornbote,’ or 3/4d., to be given to the lord at Michaelmas by each of the customary tenants, and other customs, held, by another fine levied between the aforesaid earl, and Robert and William, of Hugh de Audele, as of his pourparty of the earldom of Gloucester, by service of a pair of white gloves price 1d.

The manor (extent given), which the said late earl gave a year ago, together with other lands and tenements in other counties, with the king’s licence, to the above-mentioned Robert and William, who afterwards, by fine levied in the king’s court on the octave of Holy Trinity last past, regranted the same to the said earl, to hold to him and the heirs of his body, with remainder to John de Veer and his heirs, held of the archbishop of Canterbury without any service except suit of court every three weeks at the archbishop’s court of Canterbury.

Yeftele. The manor (extent given), held, with divers other lands in other counties, in form underwritten, of the grant of Roger de Gyldesburgh, by fine levied in the king’s court in 2 Edward III, to the said Robert and the heirs male of his body, with remainders to Grace, daughter of the said Robert for her life, and further remainders to Robert son of the said Grace, and Amaury (Almaricus), William, and Richard, his brothers and the heirs male of their bodies in succession, and to the right heirs of the said Robert le Fitz Neel; and the said Robert le Fitz Neel died without heir male of his body, so that the said manor, &c. ought to remain to the said Grace for her life. The manor is held of the king in chief, by service of a knight’s fee.
