The said manor is held of the king in chief by service of finding an armed man in the king’s war.
Memorandum.—After that inquisition (was) returned into the chancery, John de la Ryvere, son and heir of John de la Ryvere, petitioned that the manor of Hampton aforesaid, which was taken into the king’s hand after the said Richard’s death, might be delivered to him, by virtue of the said inquisition and of the fine in that behalf levied in the king’s court and shown in the said chancery; and because it was alleged for the king that Amice de la Ryvere, long before the levying of the said fine, released all her right in the said manor to the said Richard and the lawful heirs of his body, and that John de la Ryvere, son and heir of the said Richard, is still within age, so that the wardship of the said manor ought to belong to the king until the lawful age of the same John, a day was given to the said John son of John, in the said chancery, on the aforesaid matter, on the quinzaine of St. Michael next coming, &c. And the escheator is commanded to make fuller enquiry and certify to the king concerning certain articles touching the said matter, for the right of the king and of the said heir so within age.

Writ of certiorari, 3 February, 7 Edward III. To the Treasurer and chamberlains to search the Feet of Fines in the king’s treasury and send a transcript of the Foot of a Fine levied in 14 Edward II, between Joan late the wife of John de Tillebury and Master Richard Abel, concerning the manors of Westtillebury and Westnewelond and the advowsons of the church and chapel of Westtillebury.
ESSEX. Transcript of a Foot of Fine, made on the quinzaine of St. John the Baptist, 14 Edward II.
Between Joan late the wife of John de Tillebury, and Master Richard Abel, of the abovesaid manors and advowsons, whereby the said Richard granted the said manor of Westtillebury and advowsons to the said Joan to hold of the king for her life; and also granted to her the reversion for her life of the said manor of Westnewelonde, which Robert de Gyngges and Joan his wife held as the said Joan’s dower of the said Master Richard’s inheritance; and after the said Joan’s death the said manors and advowsons shall remain to Idonia, daughter of the said John and Joan, and the heirs of her body, and in default of such heirs to the right heirs of the same John. For which grant and agreement the same Joan gave to the said Master Richard 200l. sterling, and this agreement as concerns the said manor of Westillebury and the said advowsons was made by the king’s command, the said Robert and Joan his wife being present and agreeing to it, and they did fealty to the said Joan late the wife of the said John in the same court.
Memorandum. Whereas it has been found by inquisition that the above mentioned Idonia held on the day she died the manor of Westillebury, with the advowsons of the church and chapel there, of the king, as of the honour of Reyleye by knight’s service, and that William de Tillebury, her uncle, was her next heir, and the same William sought that the premises should be delivered to him as such next heir; the escheator was commanded to warn William Vaghan and Joan his wife, who claimed a right in the premises, to be before the king in his chancery, on the quinzaine of Easter in the 7th year of his reign, to show cause why the premises should not be so delivered; at which day the said William Vaghan and Joan came by their attorney and showed, although the said writ was not returned at that day, a transcript of a fine levied in the king’s court in 14 Edward II, sent into the king’s chancery under the seal of the exchequer and fastened hereto, by which it was found that Master Richard Abel granted the said manor and advowsons to the said Joan, for her life, and also (showed) letters patent of the king’s father by which the said king granted licence for this, and the said William Vaghan and Joan asserted that they had quietly held the premises from the time of the levying of the said fine, and before the death of the said Idonia, by virtue of that fine, and still hold them, and pray that they may not be removed from the possession of the same; and because the said William de Tyllebury did not come at the aforesaid day, nor was anything said or shown on behalf of his right in this matter, &c., it was considered that the said William Vaghan and Joan may depart without a day, &c.

The said manor was at one time in the seisin of Henry de Pynkenye, knight, who enfeoffed Hugh le Despensere, the elder, of the same to hold to him and his heirs. Afterwards the said Edmund claimed right in the same, and, when the said Hugh was exiled from the kingdom, intruded upon the same; and afterwards the said Hugh returned by the king’s licence and re-entered the same. Afterwards the said Edmund acknowledged that he had wrongfully entered the same, and surrendered himself to the said Hugh’s will for the transgression; whereupon the said Hugh and Edmund were reconciled, and the said Edmund voluntarily released all his right in the said manor. And by consent of the parties the same Edmund brought a writ of mort dancestor against the said Hugh, claiming the said manor, so that by process continued and judgment therein rendered the same Edmund released all his right in the same to the said Hugh in fee, who continued that estate quietly until his forfeiture to the king. Afterwards, in the time intervening between the said Hugh’s seisin and the king’s seisin, the said Edmund intruded himself upon the said manor; and afterwards the king seized the same into his hand by the said Hugh’s forfeiture, and granted it to the said Edmund for life, who had therefore no other estate therein except the king’s demise.
That manor, and Foulmere, are held by one and the same service of the king, viz.—by service of a knight’s fee, and finding two armed footmen in time of war in the castle of Windsor for 40 days, for which ward the king has yearly at the said castle 20s. from the same manors; and he rendered 7s. 6d. for suit and hidage to the king, by the hands of the sheriff, for lands and tenements which were wont to be held of the said manor of Dachete.
