NOTTINGHAM. Inq. taken at Retford on Saturday before St. Bartholomew, 17 Edward III.
Hayton and Clareburgh. Two messuages and 80a. land held of the archbishop of York by service of making two appearances at the said archbishop’s court of Lanum.
He died on the feast of St. Denis, 6 Edward III. John his son, aged 22 years and 9 weeks, is his next heir.

Skelton. A messuage and 17a. land, which were of John de Skelton, who held of the king in chief, are in the king’s hand by reason of the said John’s death. They are held of the king in chief by service of 7d. yearly for cornage.
William son and heir of the said John is dead, and Clement de Skelton, brother of the said William, is his next heir and of full age.

Husom. A messuage and two bovates of land held of the heir of William de Roos of Hamelak, who held of the king in chief, a minor and in the king’s wardship, by service of a ninety-sixth part of a knight’s fee. He held no other lands &c. in the county.
He died on 8 June last. William his son, aged 23 years and more, is his next heir.

GLOUCESTER. Inq. 10 September, 17 Edward III.
Weston Underegge. Geoffrey de Weston Underegge held of the king in chief a messuage, three virgates of land, 8a. …, and 12s. rent, by homage, fealty and scutage; which Geoffrey, in 6 Edward III, by the king’s licence, gave the said tenements to Sir Thomas de Evesham for the life of Geoffrey de Weston of Kynete. In the octave of St. Hilary, 10 Edward III, by fine levied in the king’s court between John de Westone and Agnes his wife and the said Geoffrey de Weston Underegge, the said Geoffrey granted for himself and his heirs that the said tenements in Weston Underegge, which after the death of the said Geoffrey de Weston of Kynete ought to revert to the aforesaid Geoffrey de Weston Underegge and his heirs, should remain wholly to the said John and Agnes and the heirs of their bodies.
The said Thomas de Evesham died on the fourth of the kalends of August, 17 Edward III, and the said Geoffrey de Weston of Kynete still survives, and also the said Agnes; and now William de Glatton has married the said Agnes, which William and Agnes hold the said tenements for the life of the said Geoffrey, by the grant of the executors of the said Thomas.

London. A messuage in the parish of St. Clement Danes without the bar of the New Temple held of the king in chief by service of six horse shoes with the nails pertaining to the same, and 4d. yearly at the king’s exchequer. He held no other lands &c. in the bailiwick.
He died on Tuesday next before the feast of St. Petronilla last. Joan and Joan (sic) his daughters, aged 30 years and more, are his next heirs.

Burton by Lincoln. A capital messuage and six bovates of land, held jointly with Cecily his wife, who still survives, for their lives with remainder to John de Carleton, son of the said Cecily, and the heirs of his body for ever, of Roger de la Chaumbre of Burton by service of 3s. yearly.
Henry his son, aged 15 years and more, is his next heir.
LINCOLN. Inq. 6 May, 17 Edward III.
Lincoln. Seven messuages within the city and the suburb thereof held of his own acquisition; which messuages the said Thomas, before the day of his death, bequeathed in his will, as is the custom of the said city, and according to royal grants used hitherto made by the king touching the same, to Cecily his wife for her life, with remainder to John de Carleton her son, and the heirs of his body, and further remainders to Henry brother of the said John, and the heirs of his body, and to the right heirs of the said Thomas for ever. Each messuage is held of the king in chief, as in burgage of the said city, by service of 1d. yearly which is called Landtolpeny, to be paid to the bailiffs of the said city in aid of their farm.

On Sunday next before the feast of St. Lucy, 15 Edward III, he demised all his lands &c. to Augustine del Clyf, parson of the church of Bramptone, Peter brother of the said Augustine, Robert de la Faleyse, and Robert de Burgh, chaplain, in fee, viz.—
Hernetherne. The manor, with appurtenances in Westelton, held of the prior of Ely, as of the fee of St. Etheldreda, in socage by service of a clove gillyflower yearly; 40a. land held of Robert de Kelleshull and Eleanor his wife by service of 2s. 1/2d. yearly; 16a. land held of John de Risingges by service of 7s. 3d. yearly; 12a. land held of John de Donewyco by service of 4s. 6d. yearly; 7a. land held of the prior of Blithburgh by service of 2s. yearly; and 3a. land held of Eleanor de Cleydone by service of 6d. yearly.
He died on 17 April, 16 Edward III. Augustine his son, aged 19 years and more, is his next heir.

BEDFORD. Inq. Tuesday after St. Peter ad Vincula, 17 Edward III.
Wardon. A messuage, 16a. land and 1 1/2a. meadow, held for life, of the king in chief, by the courtesy of England, as of the right of Rose (Rosia) his wife.
Nicholas son of the said William and Rose, aged 50 years, is his next heir.
Writ of certiorari reciting the above inquisition, on the petition of John son and heir of Thomas de Littleton, who held of the king in chief, a minor and in the king’s wardship, shewing that, whereas the said Nicholas, by his charter, long before the death of the said William his father, viz. in 7 Edward III, granted the abovesaid messuage, land and meadow, which ought to have descended to the said Nicholas, as son and heir of the said Rose his mother, after the death of the said William, to the said Thomas, father of the said John, to hold to him and his heirs, with the king’s licence, as more fully appears by that charter and other deeds &c. exhibited in the chancery, and the said William, by virtue thereof, attorned to the said Thomas for those tenements, whereby, after the death of the said William, they ought to remain in the king’s hand, by reason of the minority of the said John son of Thomas; nevertheless, those tenements, at the suit of the said Nicholas, immediately after the death of his said father, on an inquisition taken by pretext of a writ de diem clausit extremum touching the death of the said Rose, the truth being untold as to the aforesaid alienation, were delivered to the said Nicholas, as son and heir of the said Rose, in deception of the king and his court, and to the king’s loss and the manifest danger of disherison of the said heir of the said Thomas, 26 November, 17 Edward III.
BEDFORD. Inq. taken at Bykeleswade on Friday before St. Dunstan, 18 (?) Edward III (defaced).
Nicholas de Whytton, son of William de Whytton, and Rose his wife, never granted to Thomas de Littleton, by charter or by any other writing, the messuage, 16a. land [and] 1 1/2a. meadow contained in the said writ; and the said William, who held the said tenements of the king in chief, by the courtesy of England, never attorned to the said Thomas. The said tenements are held of the king in chief, by service of a fiftieth part of a knight’s fee.

Sutton Maundevill. Three parts of the manor held of the lord of Shernton by knight’s service, which Maurice de Berkelegh now holds.
Nypprede. The manor held, as of the fee of John Mauduyt of Somerford, of his lordship of Funtel Giffard by knight’s service and by service of 6d. yearly.
Roughcombe. The manor held of the said John Mauduyt by knight’s service and by service of 4 1/2d. yearly.
Swaleweclive. Thirteen messuages and a half, two carucates of land and a fourth part of two messuages and of four virgates of land, held of the same John by knight’s service, and by service of 4s. 11 1/2d. yearly; a messuage and 14a. land held of John de Lye by knight’s service; a messuage held of the prior of St. John of Jerusalem in England by service of 4d. yearly; and three parts of two messuages and of four virgates of land, and also one virgate of land, held of the abbess of Wilton by knight’s service.
He died on Saturday the feast of All Saints, 17 Edward III. Thomas West, knight (chivaler), his son, aged 22 years, is his next heir.

DEVON. Inq. taken at Nyweton Abbot’s on Thursday after St. Lucy, 17 Edward III.
Hemmeston Cauntelo. The manor (extent given) held for life of William de la Zouche, lord of Great Totton, for a fortieth part of a knight’s fee, with remainder to Thomas son of the said Thomas, who still survives, by fine levied in the king’s court in 4 Edward III.
He died on 1 November last in parts beyond the seas, as related to the jury. Thomas his son, aged 22 years and more on the feast of St. Nicholas last, is his next heir.

Writ of plenius certiorari, because by an inquisition returned into the chancery, it was found that the said Robert, on the day he died, held a messuage and a virgate of land in Weston by Wedon of the king in chief by service of a clove gillyflower, as of the fee of Pynkeneye, and Henry de Greystok, keeper of that fee, has given the king to understand that the said tenements are held by knight’s service, whereby the wardship thereof ought to belong to the king, 20 August, 17 Edward III.
NORTHAMPTON. Inq. taken at Guyldenmorton, 11 September, 17 Edward III.
Weston by Wedon. A messuage and a virgate of land (extent given) held of the king in chief, as of the fee of Pynkeneye, by knight’s service and a clove gillyflower yearly.
Atneston. A messuage and 12a. land held, of the gift of John Deyntee of Farnyngho who enfeoffed the said Robert thereof to hold to him and the heirs of his body, of Ralph Deyntee by fealty and service of 2s. yearly. He held no other lands &c. in the county.
He died on Monday next after the Ascension last. William his son, aged 9 years on the feast of the Annunciation last, is his next heir.

433. MARGERY, LATE THE WIFE OF THOMAS PIPARD or PIPPARD.
Writ, 12 February, 17 Edward III.
SUFFOLK. Inq. taken at Ipswich (Gippewyc’), 23 March, 17 Edward III.
Hintelesham. The manor (extent given) and the advowson of the church, held in dower for her life, of the inheritance of William Pippard, knight; which William lately granted that the said manor and advowson, after the death of the said Margery, should remain to Geoffrey Gilbert, to hold to him and his heirs, of the king and his heirs, by the accustomed services for ever; and the said Geoffrey, having received the attornment of the said Margery, granted that the said manor and advowson should, after her death, remain to the said William Pippard and Margery his wife and the heirs male of their bodies, as is contained more fully in the king’s charter of licence. The said manor and advowson are held of the king in chief by service of a sparrowhawk (nisy) yearly, price 2s., except the capital messuage of the said manor, which is held of Richard de Goldyngham by service of 8d. yearly.
