A yearly rent of 10l. 13s. 4d. from the manor, held in form underwritten, viz.—Robert de Gynes de Coucy, (fn. 1) who held the said manor for his life of the inheritance of the said William de Coucy, whilst the said Robert was in the fealty of the king of England, by his writing granted and demised the said manor to William de Middelton to hold for the life of the said Robert, who still survives, rendering yearly to the said Robert 16 marks for his life; so that after the said Robert’s death the said rent would be extinct, and then the said manor would remain to the said William de Coucy, now deceased, and to his heirs for ever. The present king granted to the said William de Coucy the said rent, to hold for the life of the said Robert, by reason of the adhesion of the said Robert to the power and dominion of France; which William de Coucy was seised of the same by the hands of the said William de Middelton, and continued his seisin thereof until he died, and he had no other lands &c. within the liberties of Richemund. The manor is held of John de Gaunte, son of the king of England, as of the honour of Richemund, by homage and fealty and by service of a sixth part of a knight’s fee; and although called the manor of Middelton it is, nevertheless, only a third part of the said manor.
Heir unknown.

He held nothing of the king in chief in the West Riding.

Petition to the king by Henry earl of Lancaster, that, whereas William de Coucy held, on the day he died, certain lands &c. of the king in chief, and certain lands &c. of the said earl, in the county of Lancaster, and died without heir, whereby all his lands &c. were taken into the king’s hand and still remain there until the wardship thereof be granted to the countess of Pembroke, it would please the king to command his chancellor and others of his council to enquire fully into the truth of this business, that right and reason may be done, according to the law and usage of the realm. (French. Undated.)
Endorsed: This bill was delivered by the king to the chancellor on 19 August and the chancellor was commanded to enquire and do right to the earl.
Writ of scire facias to the sheriff of Lancaster. Whereas by an inquisition made by the king’s escheator in the said county (see above) it was found that the said William was seised of the manor of Maureholm and of a moiety of the manor of Wyresdale, co. Lancaster, that the said manor and moiety are held of Henry, earl of Lancaster, by knight’s service, and that the said William died without an heir, whereupon the said earl has prayed the king to cause the said manor and moiety to be delivered to him as his escheat; the sheriff is to warn Mary de Sancto Paulo, countess of Pembroke, who holds the said manor and moiety by the king’s grant, for a term not yet past, and also Aymer Darcy, to whom the moiety of the said manor of Wyresdale ought to remain, after the lapse of the said term, by a grant made by the king to him for his life, to be in the chancery on Saturday after the Purification next with the said grants and other evidences, if they have any, to show why the said manor, and moiety should not be resumed into the king’s hand, and delivered to the aforesaid earl to hold of his escheat. 14 January 18 Edward III.
Endorsed by the sheriff that he has done accordingly. At which day the said countess and Aymer came by their attorneys and the said countess showed certain letters of protection, containing that the king wills that the said countess, because he is about to depart to parts beyond the seas, shall be quit of all pleas and plaints, except pleas of dower, whereof she has nothing, and [pleas of] quare impedit and assizes of novel disseisin and last presentation &c.; whereupon the said countess and Aymer were told to depart sine die.
