LEICESTER. Inq. made at Haloughton, 12 March, 12 Edward III.
Medbourne. 6a. land, and 1a. meadow and pasture, which were of Henry de Creton, 20s. yearly rent to be received from two free tenants (named), and a fourth part of the perquisites of court, with a certain view, held of the king in chief by petty serjeanty, viz.—by service of rendering to the king the head of a barbed arrow, as often as the king should come to his castle of Rokyngham to hunt in his forest there.
She died on the morrow of St. Mark, 17 Edward II. Hugh Dosevill her son, aged 60 years on Christmas day last, is her next heir.
Writ of certiorari super causa captionis concerning the above tenements, 12 March, 12 Edward III.
Return by the escheator that he did not take into the king’s hand all the tenements in this writ mentioned, but William Erneys, late the king’s escheator in the counties of Warwick, Leicester, &c., delivered to him by indenture 10s. rent in Medbourn and a fourth part of the perquisites of the court there, asserting that they were in the king’s hand as wardship, through the death of Margery Dosevill, who was the fourth of the heirs of William de Kirkeby, deceased; and, because now the escheator has found by an inquisition taken before him, by virtue of the king’s writ lately directed to him and returned into the chancery, that the said Margery held of the king in chief the said tenements, together with 6a. land, 1a. meadow and pasture, which Henry de Creton sometime held, and 10s. rent in the said town, and a certain view to be held there, by service of rendering to the king the head of a barbed arrow, as often as the king should come to his castle of Rokyngham, to hunt in the forest there, which land, meadow, pasture and rent were not previously taken into the king’s hand, nor delivered by indenture to the escheator, he took [the same] into the king’s hand (undated).

And after her death, the said manor and advowson ought to remain to Nicholas de Iwelton and his heirs, as more fully appears by a fine levied in the king’s court, and by the king’s charter of licence.

Erlegh or Erle. He held no lands &c. of the king in chief, or of any other lord in the bailiwick, because, long before his death, viz. on Saturday next before St. Gregory the Pope, 19 Edward II, he granted, with that king’s licence, the manor of Erlegh to Humphrey de la Rokele and Maud his wife, excepting only scutage when it runs, reasonable aid for making his son a knight and marrying his daughter, and the advowson of the chapel of the manor, to hold to the said Humphrey and Maud for their lives, doing to the king the services pertaining to the said manor, viz. the service of half a knight’s fee; the said king’s licence having been obtained, which is dated at Cippenham, 11 November, 19 Edward II.

98. REGINALD DE ROKESLE.

Senclyng and Okemere. The manor, held jointly with Joan his wife of the king in chief by service of a knight’s fee, and by rendering 16s. 4d. for the ward of the castle of Dover every twenty weeks, and at the manor of Ossprenges, which is the king’s, a pair of gilt spurs yearly and suit of court at the king’s court of Ossprenges.
Sir William de la Marche, late bishop of Bath and Wells, enfeoffed the said Reginald and Joan of the said manor, but the jurors know not whether with the king’s licence or not.
Richard son of William de Rokesle, nephew of the said Reginald, aged 8 years, is his next heir.
Writ of certiorari on the complaint of Joan late the wife of the said Reginald, that the manor of Sentlynge, which William, late bishop of Bath and Wells gave to Roger de Rokesle for life, with remainder to the said Reginald and Joan, niece of the said bishop, and to the heirs of their bodies, was now taken into the king’s hand, 9 July, 11 Edward III.

Senclyng. William, late bishop of Bath and Wells, gave the manor to Roger de Rokesle for life, with remainder to the said Reginald and Joan, niece of the said bishop, and to the heirs of their bodies, by charter dated Monday next after the Purification, 23 Edward I; and the said Roger continued his seisin all his life, and the said Reginald and Joan were jointly seised of the manor until the said Reginald’s death, on which account the manor is in the king’s hand and for no other reason.
Augustine le Waleys, to whom the king committed the wardship of the lands &c. of the said Reginald, was present at the taking of this inquisition.

DERBY. Inq. Tuesday next after the Exaltation of the Holy Cross, 11 Edward III.
Tydeswell. A third part of the manor held of Lady Philippa, queen of England, as of the castle and honour of High Peak, which is in the hand of the said queen, by fealty, and by service of rendering to the said castle 20s. yearly.
Wormehull. A third part of a water-mill held of the said queen, as of the said castle, by service of rendering 8d. yearly to the said castle; and a third part of a messuage, and 10a. land, held of the said queen, as of the said castle, by serjeanty, viz. by homage, and by service of finding a man with bow and arrows in the said queen’s forest of High Peak.
She held no other lands &c. on this side Trent.
Thomas Meverell, her son, aged 22 years and more, is her next heir.
The said Elizabeth died on Tuesday next after the Assumption, 6 Edward III, and immediately after her death, the said queen granted to James Coterel the wardship of all the said lands &c. until the lawful age of her heir, and he is still seised thereof.

Welcomstowe A messuage, land and rent (extent given), held for her life by the said Beatrice, late the wife of John de Blounville, by the demise of Alexander de Balyolf, with reversion to the said Alexander and his heirs; and after her death, they reverted to John de Benstede and his heirs. Edmund, son and heir of the said John de Benstede, afterwards granted that the said tenements, by virtue of the grant and attornment made to him in this behalf, should, after the death of the said Beatrice, remain to Robert de Morle and William de Playford and their heirs; and the said Robert and William afterwards granted that the said tenements should, after the death of the said Beatrice, remain to Maud, late the wife of the said Edmund, for her life, and after her death to John, son of the said Edmund, and his heirs for ever. The said John is 5 years of age and more. The said tenements are held of the king in chief, as of the barony of Valoyns, for a twelfth part of a knight’s fee.

Salop, by the grant of Joan, late the wife of Richard de Cornubia, by fine levied in the court of King Edward II, with his licence, to hold to the said Geoffrey and Margaret and the heirs of their bodies, with remainder to the right heirs of the said Geoffrey, of the said king and his heirs for ever; that the said Margaret continued her seisin with the said Geoffrey, until his death, and afterwards with the said William de Evereys, until his death; and that the said William had no estate in the said manors except as husband of the said Margaret, who has prayed the king to remove his hand from the said manors, which by reason of the death of the said William have been taken into the king’s hand; the escheator is to make enquiry &c. 13 May, 11 Edward III.

Treve. The manor (extent given) held of Henry de Percy, as of his manor of Petteworth, by service of five knights’ fees, and by doing suit at the court of Petteworth.
Nuttebourn. The manor (extent given) held of Lady Isabella, queen of England, as of the honour of Mohaut, by service of a knight’s fee; and there are paid yearly from the manor twenty marks to John le Blount, knight, for his life, by the grant of the said William.
Alan his son, aged 19 years and more, is his next heir of the said manors.
LEICESTER. Inq. made at Leicester, 29 May, 11 Edward III.
Kylwarby. Seven and a half virgates of land held of the king in chief, as of the crown, by service of a quarter of a knight’s fee.
Assheby la Zousche. The manor (extent given), including a market, with a fair on the feast of the Exaltation of the Holy Cross, a park, and lands put to farm at Swertclyf, held of Henry de Beaumond by service of two knights’ fees.
He died on 28 February last. Heir as last above.

NOTTINGHAM. Inq. taken at Kerkeby in Asshefeld on Wednesday after Holy Trinity, 11 Edward III.
Brunnesley. A moiety of a meadow called ‘Thregermedeu’ containing 3a., held for his life, by the courtesy of England of the inheritance of Isabel late his wife some time deceased, of the king in chief, as of the honour of Peverell which is in the king’s hand, by fealty, and by service of rendering 3s. yearly to the king at his exchequer by the hands of the sheriff of Nottingham and Derby.
Wandesley. A capital messuage, lands and rent (extent given), held in form aforesaid, of Lady Lora de Stotevill, late the wife of John de Stotevill, by service of a moiety of a knight’s fee; and lands, rent, &c. (extent given), similarly held of Nicholas de Cantilupo by knight’s service.
He died on the day of St. Lawrence, 9 Edward III. William, son of the said William and Isabel, aged 30 years and more, is their next heir.

The manor (extent given), including a park, another park called Ulfhou, a plot called Aunays, 12s. 4d. yearly from tenants who hold shielings at Bretby, 13s. 6d. yearly from tenants at Botil, and 11s. 9d. yearly from tenants at Satherton, held for her life of the manor of Egermund for a knight’s fee, and by service of 13s. 4d. yearly; which manor of Egermund is of the inheritance of John de Multon, lately deceased, who held of the king in chief, whose lands and tenements, because Alice late his wife is pregnant, are in the king’s hand.
John, son of the said Richard, aged 32 years and more, is next heir of all the above.

Lecamstede. Two messuages and two and a half virgates of land, held of Alan de Leaume by service of 6d. at the feast of the Annunciation; and two virgates of land, held of Richard de Chastiloun by service of 1d. at the feast of St. Michael.
Morton by Bukyngham. A messuage and four virgates of land, held of Richard de Bayhous and Katherine his wife by service of 7d.
Caveresfeld. Two messuages and two virgates of land, held of John de Wynecote by service of 2s.
He held nothing of the king in chief.

YORK. Inq. taken at Skelton in the North Riding on Wednesday the morrow of St. Martin in the Winter, 11 Edward III.
Castellevyngton. The manor (extent given), including a close called Impgarth, and a several pasture called Leybank, held of the king in chief, as of the crown, by homage and by service of finding a man with an unbarded horse, armed with a haqueton, headpiece, gloves of mail, and a lance, in time of war, for forty days at his own costs.
Taneton. Two parts of the manor (extent given) held of Bartholomew Fanacourt and Lucy his wife, and the third part of the said manor held of Thomas Wake, by service of a quarter of a knight’s fee.
Neuby. A messuage and three bovates of land, held of the said Bartholomew and Lucy by service of a thirtieth part of a knight’s fee; and the reversion of two bovates of land, held of the archbishop of Canterbury by service of a fortieth part of a knight’s fee, which the said John lately granted to Roger de Semere, who still survives, for life, without rendering anything for the same.
John, son of John son of the aforesaid John de Menill, aged 3 1/2 years at Christmas next, is his next heir.

Padyngdoune. A messuage, lands, rent, &c. (extent given), held of Lawrence, son and heir of John de Hastyng, a minor and in the king’s wardship, by service of two pairs of gilt spurs yearly.
She died on 11 August. Thomas son of Thomas de Syndelesham, aged 10 years and more, is her next heir.
