399.	PETER DE LA MARE.
	Writ, 20 August, 23 Edward III.
WILTS.	Inq. taken at Upaven, Wednesday after St. Bartholomew, 23 Edward III.
	Stepellavynton. A messuage and two carucates of land held of the king in chief by service of keeping, with a parcener, in time of war a tower of the castle of Devises for 40 days at his own costs, and in time of peace rendering to the said castle for the said keeping 20s. yearly. The said tenements are held for half a knight’s fee. Cnabwelle. The manor, held of the manor of Troubrygg, as of the earldom of Salisbury, now in the prince’s hand, for a sixth part of a knight’s fee. He died on Sunday the morrow of the Assumption last. Robert de la Mare, his son, aged 35 years and more, is his heir.

HERTFORD.	Inq. taken at Hicch, Sunday before the Nativity of the Blessed Mary, 23 Edward III.
	Offeleye. Eleven messuages, 200a. arable, 40a. wood, 7a. pasture and 24s. rent held of Edward de Kendale, knight, as of the manor of Hicch, by service of a knight’s fee and 5s. yearly rent called ‘Sherrevisshot’; six messuages, 140a. arable and 20a. wood held of Nicholas Peyvre, knight, by service of half a knight’s fee and 3d. yearly for ‘Sherrevisshot.’ He died on Monday after the Assumption last. Robert de la Mare, knight, his son, aged 32 years and more, is his heir.

	Mershbaldyndon. The manor (extent given) including lands lying untilled late of 5 villeins who are dead, held of the duke of Cornwall, as of the honour of Wallyngford, by service of half a knight’s fee. Heyford ad Pontem. A moiety of the manor (extent given), held of the same duke, of the honour of Walyngford, by service of half a knight’s fee; the other moiety of the manor (extent given, including a water-mill with a small fishery), held of Henry de Wylynton by service of half a knight’s fee. He held no other lands &c. in the county. He died on 16 August last. Robert de la Mare, his son, aged 30 years and more, is his heir.

	Westkyngton. A moiety of the manor (extent given) held in dower after the death of Peter le fitz Renaud her husband of the king in chief by knight’s service, of the inheritance of Henry le fitz Roger, kinsman (cognati) and heir of the said Peter. She had no other lands &c. in the county. She died on 1 August, 23 Edward III. The aforesaid Henry le fitz Roger, her son, of full age, is her heir. The inquisition is headed ‘pro Henrico le fitz Roger.’

KENT.	Inq. taken at Maidenstan, 10 August, 23 Edward III.
	Westbarmlyng. Two parts of the manor, with the advowson of the church, held of the king in chief by service of two parts of a knight’s fee. (Unspecified.) A messuage, 70a. arable, 16a. meadow held in gavelkind of the prior of Christ Church, Canterbury, of his manors in Est Farle and Lese by fealty and suit of the said prior’s court at those manors and by rendering yearly to him at his manor of Est Farle 4l., seven plough shares and eight hens and at his manor of Lese 23s. Soundressh. The manor, held of the archbishop of Canterbury as of his manor of Otteforde by service of one knight’s fee and by rendering yearly at the said manor of Otteforde 22l. and one mark of fee farm. Frenyngham. The manor, held of the heirs of Roger de Kyrkeby by service of three quarters of a knight’s fee. Merdenne. A messuage, 60a. arable and 10a. meadow held of Philippa queen of England, of her manor of Midelton, by service of 4d. rent yearly. He died on 21 J[uly] last. Ralph de Frenyngham, knight, aged 25 years and [more], is his heir.

402.	THOMAS DURAUNT.
	Writ, 14 June, 23 Edward III.
SOMERSET.	Inq. taken at Nuwetonplecy, 23 June, 23 Edward III.
	Nuwetonplecy. A third part of the manor, with the advowson of the chapel and the advowson of the church of Haugkerigh on every third presentation, held of the king in chief by knight’s service. He died on Sunday, 10 May last. Maud his daughter, aged 12 years and more, is his heir.

MIDDLESEX:	Inq. taken at Totenham, Friday, 2 July, 23 Edward III.
	Enefeld. A messuage very well built (optime edificato), a garden, a dovecot, seven score and ten acres of land, 35a. 3r. meadow, 12a. several pasture, two water-mills and a fulling mill charged with a rent of 35q. corn to the earl of Hereford, two cottages and 36s. 8d. rent, of which a mill and 10a. land are held of the abbot of Waleden by service of 13s. 4d. yearly, and all the residue of the earl of Hereford by service of 3s. yearly. Edelmpton. A cottage and a small curtilage, 9a. land and 6a. meadow (tenure not specified). He held no other lands &c. in the county. He died on Thursday after the Invention of the Holy Cross last. Heir as above, aged 13 years.

403.	JOAN, LATE THE WIFE OF NICHOLAS BACHELLER.

SURREY.	Inq. taken at Dorkyng, 20 April, 23 Edward III.
	Dorkyng. A messuage by Westcote, 80a. arable, 40a. wood, 3s. 4d. rent and a decayed dovecot held for life, of the gift of John de Hastynges, father of Laurence de Hastynges, late earl of Pembroke, with remainder to the heirs of the said John, viz. to the manor of Westcote, which is in the custody of Thomas de Clopton, keeper of the king’s wardrobe, by grant of the king, the son and heir of Laurence de Hastynges being a minor in the king’s wardship. (Added at the foot of the inquisition.) The aforesaid tenements are held of the king in chief, as parcel of the manor of Westcote, which is held of the king in chief, as of the honour of Laigle, by knight’s service. She held no other lands &c. in the county. She died on 16 February last. John, son of Laurence de Hastynges, late earl of Pembroke, aged 1 1/2 years, is her heir.

404.	MAUGER ATTE NEULOND.
	Writ, 12 August, 23 Edward III.
ESSEX.	Inq. taken at Chelmersford, Monday the feast of St. Bartholomew, 23 Edward III.
	Neulond. The manor (extent given), held for life of the grant of John Ledet, rector of the church of Widiton, to the said Mauger and Mabel his wife, long since deceased, for their lives, with successive remainders to Henry their son, who survives, for life, John brother of the said Henry and the heirs male of his body, and to the right heirs of Mauger, of the king, as of the honour of Boulogne, by service of two knights’ fees. An acre of meadow is worth only 12d. instead of 2s. on account of the common pestilence in the countryside. He held no other lands &c. in the county. He died on 17 July last. The aforesaid Henry, aged 23 years and more, is his heir.

405.	WILLIAM SPROXTON or DE SPROXTON.
	Writ, 22 May, 23 Edward III.
YORK.	Inq. taken at Kirkeby Morsete, Monday before the Nativity of St. John the Baptist, 23 Edward III.
	Sproxton. The said William was sometime seised of the manor (extent given including ‘le Hallegarth’) and gave it to Simon de Sproxton, who gave it again to the said William for life, with remainders to Robert son of the said William and Christiana daughter of Nicholas de Meignill and the heirs of their bodies and to the right heirs of the said William for ever, by licence of Edward II in his 14th year. The manor is held of the king in chief by service of a quarter of a knight’s fee and by homage and service of rendering 13s. 4d. yearly at the Exchequer by the hands of the sheriff. He died on 26 March last. The aforesaid Robert de Sproxton, his son, aged 30 years and more, is his heir.

406.	WILLIAM DE CARTURETT or DE CARTERETT.
	Writ to John Mautravers, keeper of the islands of Gerneseye, Gereseye, Serk and Aureneye, or to his lieutenant in Gereseye, 20 June, 23 Edward III.
JERSEY.	Inq. taken in Jersey, 20 July, 1349, reciting above writ.
	St. Martin’s parish. A manor of the fee of the abbess of Caen and lands, rents and tenements of the fee of the king, held of the said king by rendering the accustomed farm to the king’s reeve (prevost), without other seigneury or noble service. The aforesaid tenements are now worth yearly 30 livres Tournois or thereabouts. St. Mary’s parish. Lands, tenements and rents worth two quarters of wheat, held of the king by rendering yearly five shillings and sixpence Tournois to the king’s reeve for greverie. He died in the first week of March last. Philip de Carteret his brother, aged 35 years or thereabouts, is his heir. (French.)

407.	REYNOLD DE CARTERET.

JERSEY.	Inq. taken in Jersey, 20 July, 1349, reciting a writ dated 20 June, 23 Edward III.
	Grouville parish. A manor called ‘le Hommet’ held of the king by rendering 25s. Tournois yearly to the king’s reeve of the parish for farm. The said manor and all the lands &c. that the said Reynold held in the island were worth formerly 30 livres Tournois yearly and are now worth 15 livres Tournois or thereabouts. He died in the second week of Lent last. Philip de Carteret, his son, aged 35 years or thereabouts, is his heir. (French.)

408.	PETER, SON AND HEIR OF WILLIAM DE MEAUX, a minor in the king’s wardship.

YORK; LIBERTY OF HOLDERNESS.	Inq. taken at Hedon, Saturday, 6 February, 24 Edward III.
	Outthorn. A hall with two chambers and a bovate of land, which came into the king’s hand by the minority of the said Peter; two parts of a messuage except the aforesaid hall and chambers, 16 cottages, 8 bovates of land and 4s. rent, in the king’s hand since the death on Saturday 10 July last of Katherine, late the wife of the said William, who held them for life of the inheritance of the said Peter; the third part of the said messuage, except the aforesaid hall and chambers, 3 3/4 bovates of land, a windmill and 2s. rent and a toft and two bovates of land in Wythornse, in the king’s hand since the death of John Le Conestable of Halsham, who held them for life of the aforesaid inheritance, and died on 17 September last; all held of the king in chief as of the honour of Aumale, which is in the king’s hand, by service of a twelfth part of a knight’s fee and by doing suit at the king’s wapentake of Holdernesse every three weeks and rendering yearly for sheriff’s aid 7 1/2d. at mid-Lent. Joan, aged 44 years, Emma, aged 42 years, and Agnes, aged 40 years and more, daughters of Philip de Meaux, kinswomen of the said Peter, are his heirs.

WILTS.	Inq. taken at Marlebergh, Thursday after St. Peter’s Chains, 23 Edward III.
	Cherlton by Hongerford. The manor (extent given) except a sixth part thereof, held of the heir of John Mautravers the younger, who held the same of Ralph baron of Stafford, in chief, as of the hereditary right of Margaret his wife, one of the heirs of Gilbert de Clare, earl of Gloucester, service not stated. A messuage, 80a. land, 3a. meadow, 7 1/2a. pasture, 33a. wood and 7s. rent held of Robert de Hongerford, knight, by service of 40s. and 5qrs. wheat yearly. He died on Sunday before St. Barnabas last. Richard Hoppegras, his son, aged 24 years and more, is his heir.

	Wissinden or Wyssinden. A manor (extent given), including 2a. of meadow in Estmor and a pasture called Perottesmersh and 9 virgates of land formerly in the hands of villeins who are now dead, held of the king in chief as of the honour of Huntyngdon, of the pourparty of Robert Bruys, which is in the king’s hand through the forfeiture of the said Robert, by service of an eighth part of a knight’s fee. He died on Saturday after St. Barnabas last. Thomas his son, aged 22 years, is his heir.

ESSEX.	Inq. taken at Morton, Monday after St. James, 23 Edward III.
	Morton. 24a. land held of the king in chief as parcel of the manor of Morton, which manor is held of the king in chief by service of finding a horse, price 10s., and a leathern sack with an iron skewer (chevilo de ferro) to attach the said sack for 40 days at the tenant’s own costs in the king’s army in Wales; which 44a. (sic) the said Nicholas acquired of John Giffard with the king’s licence. Shenlee and Morton. A moiety of a messuage and 20a. land in Shenle held of John de Leye by service of 8s. 10d. yearly and suit of court; and the other moiety of the messuage and 60a. land in Morton held of the manor of Morton by service of 21s. 3d. yearly and suit of court. SOUTHAMPTON.	Inq. taken at Suthewyk, Tuesday after Holy Trinity, 23 Edward III.
	Porteseye. A toft and 40a. arable at Hulesy held of the king in chief by homage and service of finding an armed man for the defence (munitione) of the king’s castle of Porcestre at his own costs in time of war for 40 days and suit at the king’s court of Porcestre every three weeks; a messuage &c., 60a. arable and 2a. wood held of the lord of the manor of Warblynton by service of 7s. yearly and suit at his court every three weeks. Gatecombe in the Isle of Wight. The manor, held of the king in chief, service not known. William de Ryngebourne is escheator in the Isle of Wight, not Henry Sturmy. He died on Tuesday, 31 March, 23 Edward III. John his son, aged seven years, is his heir.

ISLE OF WIGHT.	Inq. taken at Gatecombe, Sunday after the Nativity of St. John the Baptist, 23 Edward III.
	Gatecombe. The manor, held of the king in chief as of the honour of the castle of Caresbrouk by knight’s service and suit at the court of knights of Neuport every three weeks. Robert del Isle of Merstone and Alice his wife held a messuage and a carucate of land in Merston for their lives, of the demise of John del Isle, father of the deceased, which messuage and land are parcel of the said manor, and have already come into the king’s hands by the death of the said Robert and Alice. Chesthull. A manor so called, held of the king, as of the honour of the aforesaid castle, by the aforesaid service. He held nothing else in the island. Date of death as above. Heir as above, aged seven years at the feast of St. Leonard next.

ISLE OF WIGHT.	Inq. taken at Neuport, Saturday after the Assumption, 23 Edward III.
	Whitewell and Caulborne. The manors, held by way of dower by the death of John de Insula, formerly her husband, who held of the king as of the honour of the castle of Caresbrouk by knight’s service. She held nothing of other lords in the said Isle. She died on Sunday after St. James last. John son of John del Isle of Gatcombe, aged seven years at the feast of St. Leonard next, is her heir.

415.	ALICE, LATE THE WIFE OF HENRY DE BELLO MONTE.
	Writ, 20 July, 23 Edward III.
LINCOLN.	Inq. taken at Hekyngton, Wednesday after St. James, 23 Edward III.
	Hekyngton. The manor and 40l. yearly rent from the manor of Barton held by way of dower of the king in chief by homage and service of one knight’s fee. The said manor is not worth more than 20l. yearly because the greatest part of the land and meadow is often inundated. Thoresway, Lyndewode and Steveton. The manors, which Edward II gave to Henry de Bello Monte and the aforesaid Alice his wife and the heirs of the body of Henry, to hold by homage only, with reversion to the king. She was seised of no other lands &c. in the county. She died on Thursday after the Translation of St. Thomas the Martyr last. The said Henry and Alice had a son John, their firstborn and heir, who died six years ago without heir of his body born within the realm of England or the allegiance of the king of England. Thomas de Bello Monte, son of the said Henry and Alice, aged 24 years and more, is heir of the said Henry, Alice and John.

LEICESTER.	(fn. 1) Inq. taken at Lughteburgh, 22 July, 23 Edward III.
	Whitewyk. The manor (extent given). Shepeshed. Two parts of the town. Both held of her inheritance, of the king in chief by service of a quarter of a knight’s fee. Lughteburgh. The manor, held jointly with Henry de Bello Monte, deceased, late her husband, of the king by his gift and by his charter, of the forfeiture of Hugh le Despencer, service not known, to hold to the said Henry and Alice and the heirs of their bodies, with reversion to the king and his heirs. The said manor is worth 40l. yearly and not more, through the present pestilence and paucity of people. The aforesaid Hugh before his forfeiture held the manor of the earl of Chester by service of a quarter of a knight’s fee; and the earldom of Chester at the time of the forfeiture was in the king’s hand. She held no other lands &c. in the county. She died as above. Heir as above, aged 24 years and more at the feast of St. Andrew last.

416.	JOHN, SON AND HEIR OF JOHN DE MENYL.
	Writ after the death of the said John, who died a minor in the king’s wardship, 20 January, 23 Edward III.
YORK.	Inq. taken at Stokesley, Monday after the Purification, 24 Edward III.
	No lands &c. in the county came to the king’s hands by reason of the minority of the said heir because John de Menyl, his father, died before John de Menyll the elder, and so the said John had nothing by the death of his father, but by the death of his grandfather, whose heir he was. Castellevyngton. The manor (extent given), including quedam placea vocata ‘le Impagarth’ and herbage of Leibank, held of the king in chief as of the crown by homage and service of finding a man with an unbarded horse armed with ‘aketon,’ ‘palet,’ gauntlets (cirotecis de plate), and lance in time of war at the costs of the lord of the manor for 40 days. The king granted the custody of the said manor and of other lands &c. late of the aforesaid grandfather to Robert de Malo Lacu until the lawful age of the heir. Tampton. The manor (extent given), including 11a. land called ‘Grenbergh,’ of which two parts are held of John Lacy by knight’s service and the third part of the earl of Kent by knight’s service. Neuby. Five bovates of land held of John Darcy by knight’s service. Kildale. Two bovates of land, which came into the king’s hands by the death of Thomas de Menyl and Robert his brother, who held them for their lives of the inheritance of the said heir, held of Roger Darcy by knight’s service. Throughout this inquisition the effects of the pestilence are noticed. No other lands &c. in the county came into the king’s hands by reason of the minority of the said heir. He died on 26 July last, as the jury understand, but he died outside the county of York. Alice his sister, married to Robert de Boulton, aged 22 years and more, is his heir. No offspring has as yet been begotten by the said Robert and Alice.

417.	HENRY, SON AND HEIR OF JOHN SON OF HENRY, or JOHN FITZ HENRY.
	Writ after the death of the said Henry, who died a minor in the king’s wardship, 4 November, 23 Edward III.
YORK.	Inq. taken at York, Thursday after the octave of Easter, 24 Edward III.
	Ingelton. Two parts of two parts of the manor (extent given), including rents in Yarlesbergh, Souterskales and Bentham. The residue of the manor Joan, late the wife of Henry son of John, and Cicely, late the wife of John son of Henry, hold in dower of the inheritance of the said heir. The whole manor is held of Henry son of Hugh by knight’s service and by service of rendering 10l. yearly and 17s. yearly for fines of the wapentake of Youcros, and 22s. yearly for ‘Burton Male.’ The custody of the premises during minority was committed to William del Wode. Decrease in value owing to the pestilence. No other lands &c. in the said county came to the king’s hands by reason of the minority of the said heir. He died on 12 October last. Beatrice daughter of Henry son of John, aunt of the deceased, married to Thomas de Fencotes, aged 26 years and more, is his heir.

NORTHUMBERLAND.	Inq. taken at Whytyngeham, 1 February, 24 Edward III.
	By reason of the minority of the said heir, the following lands &c. were taken into the king’s hand ex officio by Robert Bertram, late escheator of the county. Whityngeham, Throunton and Barton. Two parts of a moiety of the manor of Whityngeham and of the hamlets of Throunton and Barton, which are parcel thereof (extents given), including rents in Glanton, held of the king in chief by service of two parts of a moiety of a hawk (nisi) or two parts of a moiety of half a mark yearly by the hands of the sheriff, because the manor and town of Whityngeham and the hamlets of Throunton and Barton are held of the king in chief by service of a hawk or half a mark yearly only, as appears by a charter of Henry [II], king of England, made to Roger de Flamenvilla in these words:— H. Rex Anglorum et Dux Normannorum et Aquitanorum et Comes Andegavorum, archiepiscopis episcopis abbatibus comitibus baronibus justiciis vicecomitibus ministris et omnibus fidelibus suis Francis et Anglis, salutem. Sciatis me dedisse et presenti carta confirmasse Rogero de Flamenvilla totam terram que fuit Huchtredi filii Gamel in Withingch’ et Trowentona et Bartona et Glantadona, ipsi et heredibus suis, ad tenendam de me et de heredibus meis quietam ab omni servicio excepto uno espervario inde michi reddendo per annum. Quare volo et firmiter precipio quod ipse Rogerus et heredes sui post eum totam terram illam habeant et teneant de me et heredibus meis bene et in pace libere et quiete integre plenarie et honorifice per prenominatum servicium cum omnibus pertinentiis et libertatibus et liberis consuetudinibus suis. Testibus F[rogerio] episcopo Sagiensi, Hugone de Creissi, Goscelino Castell’ fratre Regine, Ayd. Argentom (sic). King John, on 30 March in his first year, confirmed the said charter to William son of Roger de Flamenvilla. (The text here given is the same as that in Rotuli Chartarum, p. 42b, with the addition of the following witnesses:—Robert de Ros, Richard de Reveriis, William de Cantilupo and Robert de Vancy.) The manor, with lands and tenements in Eton, held of the king in chief by service of half a knight’s fee, with the advowson of the church of Bekenesfeld, jointly with Christiana his wife, to them and the heirs of their bodies, of the feoffment of Alan de Aston, vicar of the church of Burnham, and Adam de Aylyngton, parson of the church of Aston, by fine levied on the octave of Trinity, 3 Edward III and by the king’s licence dated 9 February 3 Edward III. By the said feoffment the said Christiana is tenant of the said manor and advowson. He held no other land &c. in the county. He died on the eve of Holy Trinity last. John his son, aged 16 years, is his heir.
	Writ of certiorari super causa capcionis concerning a messuage and a carucate of land of the aforesaid Christina in Eton, 20 April, 24 Edward III.
	Endorsed by the escheator, Thomas Frembaud, that he took the tenements into the king’s hand as parcel of the manor of Burnham and, in pursuance of another writ, he has delivered the manor and advowson aforesaid to the said Christiana.
BUCKINGHAM.	Memorandum that the said Christiana has appointed William Burdon her attorney to sue for the said messuage and carucate in Eton out of the king’s hand. Undated.

As the king’s letters of licence made no mention of the tenements in Eton, the said manor and advowson having been delivered to the said Christiana, the king thought to retain the said tenements in Eton, in his own hand, but has learned that they are parcel of the said manor. BUCKINGHAM.	Inq. taken at Bekenesfeld, Wednesday before St. Luke, 24 Edward III.
	Eton. The said tenements are and always have been time out of mind parcel of the said manor and not tenements acquired separately or recently.
	Writ of plenius certiorari to the treasurer and barons of the Exchequer, reciting the preceding writ and finding of inquisition and directing a search in the Exchequer rolls and memoranda as to the said tenements in Eton, 9 November, 24 Edward III.
	Endorsed:—“Enrolled in Michaelmas term, 25 Edward III: roll 17.” Certificate by the treasurer and barons. On examination of the rolls and memoranda of the Exchequer it was found that John de Huntercombe, son and heir of Thomas de Huntercombe, is charged with 18l. 15s. for his relief of the lands &c. held by Thomas his father of the king in chief, for which he did homage on 7 April, 1 Edward III, viz. for 3 3/4 knights’ fees in the manor of Burnham, co. Buckingham, which the said Thomas held by service of rendering yearly to the ward of the castle of Wyndesore, 75s., viz. 8s. 4d. for every 40 days. The said tenements sometime belonged to Hugh de Haudeng, after whose death they descended by inheritance to Alice, his daughter and heir, who married an ancestor of the said John, as the latter acknowledged before the barons of the Exchequer in Easter term, 6 Edward III. It was also found in the Book of Fees in the Exchequer, which book is kept (habetur) not of record but for evidence, viz. in Buckingham under the heading of Honour of the Earl Marshal and Fees of the Marshal, thus:—Town of Eton. A moiety of Thomas de Lacell’, and the other moiety of Ralph de Hodeng, which they hold in chief of the king, and defend by ward at the castle of Wyndeshore with other their manors, which they hold of the king in chief of a moiety of the barony of Wyndeshore, viz. for 40 days, 16s. 8d. Nothing else has been found at present in the said rolls and memoranda touching the manor of Burnham, or the lands &c. in Eton, mentioned in the said writ. By the roll of Memoranda of 6 Edward III, Easter fines, and Book of Fees under Buckingham.
	Writ to Thomas de Foxle, constable of the castle of Wyndesore, directing him to search the rolls of fees of the said castle, to see if the lands &c. in Eyton late of the said John are parcel of the manor of Burnham or not; and if the said manor is gross by itself and the said lands &c. gross by themselves, then by what tenures they are held. 18 November, 23 Edward III.
	Certificate of the constable, Friday the morrow of St. Katherine, 24 Edward III. From the lord of Huntercombe, for 3 3/4 knights’ fees, 75s. yearly to the castle of Wyndes[ore], viz. for 40 days 8s. 4d. There are no other memoranda or evidences in the constable’s possession touching the said lands &c. in Eytone, but it is commonly said that they belong to the manor of Burnham. Memorandum of subsequent proceedings in the Chancery and Coram Rege, beginning on Saturday after the Nativity of St. John the Baptist, 25 Edward III. The king claims the custody of the tenements in Eyton as being gross by themselves, while Christiana claims them as parcel of the manor of Burnham. Nicholas de Aumberden, who married Christiana during the trial, is joined with her in the latter part of the proceedings. Eventually it was decided that the tenements were parcel of the manor of Burnham and Nicholas and Christiana had a writ for restitution thereof with the issues during the time the tenements were in the king’s hand.
