Writ of certiorari de feodis, &c. to John Lovekyn, mayor of London, 16 March, 23 Edward III.
LONDON. Inq. taken at London, 22 April, 23 Edward III.
He had no knights’ fees within the liberty of the city.
Douuegate Ward. The advowson of the church of Allhallows the Great.
Writ of certiorari, referring to the escheator’s former inquisition, by which it was found that in the manor of Stoke Arches, late of the said Hugh, there was a free chace, called the chace of Cors, the profit whereof was nothing beyond the expenses of the foresters and the maintenance of the deer. The escheator is to inquire how the moneys for those purposes arise and who receives them. 26 August, 24 Edward III.
GLOUCESTER. Inq. taken at Gloucester, Monday after St. Denis, 24 Edward III.
There is no free chace called Cors in the manor of Stoke Archers; but at Cors the abbot of Westminster has a wood and soil; the abbot of St. Augustine’s, Bristol, has the same; the prior of Durhurste the same; the lady of Hasfeld the same; John Gerunvyle the same; and the abbot of St. Peter’s, Gloucester, has the same pertaining to his manor of Mayesmore, which is called ‘Weounbrugg’ in Cors. Also, the said abbot of Gloucester has a manor called ‘Hardepirie,’ near Cors. In which manors of Mayesmor and Hardepirie the abbots of Gloucester have time out of mind had free warren. These parcels, in the hands of the aforesaid abbot, prior, lady and John Gerunvyle, are named Cors, so that the whole of Cors is in their hands, and thus neither Hugh le Despenser nor his ancestors, nor any other lord of the manor of Stoke Archers, had ever any soil or wood in Cors; but, by usurpation and encroachment (purprisam) in respect of beasts of the chace of Malverne, which was in the hands of the said Hugh and his ancestors, the said beasts were accustomed to come and go at Cors and there to feed and be sustained; whereby the said Hugh and his ancestors and the lords of Stokearchers in continuance, without any title of right, by ownership (dominium) and encroachment in Cors ordained and constituted four foresters there in Cors, of whom one, the master of the foresters, received 4d. a day by the hands of the reeve of the manor of Teukesburi, and each of the other three received 40s. yearly by the hands of the same reeve at the manor of Teukesburi. So neither the said Hugh nor his ancestors nor any other lord of Stoke Archers ever had any profits arising from the said Cors, except by the usurpation and extortion newly committed; but, through the oppression (grave dominium) of the said Hugh le Despenser, lately deceased, there were attachments and amercements for damages in the soil and wood of the said abbots, prior, lady and John Gerunvyle, made by the said foresters, which the said Hugh unjustly and without title took to his own use. Before the time and usurpation of the said Hugh all the said abbots, prior, lady and John Gerunvyle peacefully had and received the profits arising from their wood and soil, as of their right, and still take them.

440. ELIZABETH, DAUGHTER AND HEIR OF JOAN, LATE THE WIFE OF JOHN DE WYNECOTE.
Writ after the death of the said Elizabeth, who died a minor in the king’s wardship, 12 October, 23 Edward III.
WORCESTER. Inq. taken at Worcester, Saturday after St. Leonard, 23 Edward III.
Quenhull. The manor is in the king’s hand by reason of the death of the said Joan and the minority of the said Elizabeth. It is held of the king in chief by service of rendering to him [yearly] at the exchequer a hound (unum canem de moeta).
The said Elizabeth, heir of the said John and Joan, died on Monday before the Nativity of St. John the Baptist. Margaret, aged eight years, and Jueta, aged five years and more, daughters of the said Joan, are her heirs by reason of a fine levied in the king’s court. One John Geffrey, chaplain, was seised of the manor of Quenhull and enfeoffed the said John and Joan and the heirs of their bodies, with remainder to the right heirs of the said Joan. The said manor should therefore remain to the aforesaid Margaret and Jueta, as the said John and Joan and Elizabeth died without heir of themselves.
Writ after the death of the said Elizabeth, daughter and heir of John de Wynecote, who held by knight’s service of the heir of Lawrence de Hastyngges, late earl of Pembroke, a minor in the king’s wardship, 20 August, 23 Edward III.
WARWICK. Inq. taken at Aston Cantelo, 18 September, 23 Edward III.
John de Wynecote, her father, held no lands &c. of the said heir, as the writ alleges. He died six years ago, holding of the said earl two parts of a messuage, of a dovecot, of a carucate of land, and of 100s. rent in Wilmecote by service of an eighth part of a knight’s fee. Upon the said John’s death the said earl took the said tenements into his own hand by reason of the minority at that time of the four daughters and heirs of the said John. Afterwards a certain John de Hampton, knight, bought of the said earl the wardship and marriage of the said four daughters and the custody of the lands &c. aforesaid. Afterwards the said earl, who held of the king in chief, died, and his heir is a minor in the king’s wardship. Afterwards Eleanor, late the wife of the said John de Hampton, held in dower the remaining third part of the said lands &c. of the said four daughters and heirs, and died on 10 June last; whereupon the said third part was taken into the king’s hand because of the minority of the said Elizabeth, her three sisters having died in the pestilence before the said Eleanor’s death, as a wardship within a wardship by reason of the lands of the said earl’s heir being in the king’s wardship. Afterwards the said Elizabeth died on 1 August last, a minor in the king’s wardship, by whose death the aforesaid two parts of the said lands &c. were taken into the king’s hand, out of the wardship (extra custodiam) of the said John de Hampton and his executors, and so the aforesaid tenements are still in the king’s hand.
No other lands &c. in the county of her inheritance are in the king’s hand.
Date of death 1 August. William de Bunynton, her kinsman, aged 60 years and more at Whitsunday last, is her heir.
Writ, 12 April, 24 Edward III.
WORCESTER. Inq. taken at Worcester, Monday the feast of the Invention of the Holy Cross, 24 Edward III.

She held no other lands &c. in the county.
She died on Monday before the Nativity of St. John the Baptist last. Edward de Kerdyf, uncle of the said Joan and kinsman of the said Elizabeth, aged 30 years and more, is her heir.

The sheriff is to warn William de la Vale, who married the said Christiana, as is said, and the said Christiana to be before the king in chancery on the morrow of St. Nicholas next, to show cause, if any, why the said lands &c. should not be delivered to the said Elizabeth and Isabel, as sisters and heirs of the said George, and to the said Gilbert.
