Spanish Tr., I., 5, f. 59. R.O.
220. HENRY VIII. to FERDINAND, KING OF ARAGON.
Ferdinand's letters to him and the Queen have been received. Regards him as a father, and the alliance with Spain preferable to all others. Will welcome the new ambassador he intends sending. Praises his wisdom in declining, after he recovered his towns from the Venetians, to combine with other princes to destroy Venice, which is a necessary wall against the Turks. Besides, if Venice were destroyed Ferdinand's own lands in Italy would be in danger from other Christian princes. Writes more fully in a letter herewith. Believes all that Ferdinand writes of the King of the Romans, whose affairs, and those of Prince Charles, would be more prosperous had they continued allies of Spain and England. The Queen is pregnant. Retains the old ambassador until the new arrives. Greenwich, 1 Nov. 1 Hen. VIII. See Spanish Calendar, Vol. II. No. 23–4.

His letter of 24 Sept., mentioned in that of 4 Oct., is not yet received. Sorry to hear that their letters arrive opened and are delayed. Will in future address all to the Consul Lorenzo Pasqualigo. Wish that, in his letters to France and the Emperor, the King had written as of himself, and not as at their request. Have not received copies of those to the Pope and Ferdinand. Will be glad of the loan which he promises to contrive that the King shall spontaneously offer. When they learn what he has done in pursuance of their letters of 24 (sic. qu. 14 ?) Sept. and what reply has come from France as to safe conduct of the galleys, will decide about sending them in the spring. The Emperor has retreated towards Trent and their men have recovered Vicenza.

247. JOHN, KING OF DENMARK, to JAMES IV.
James is well aware of the old hostility of the Lubeckers to Denmark. Last summer they attacked Sweden, attempting to rescind the agreement lately made between the writer and his Swedish subjects. To avenge this he went into Holstein, hoping to have aid from his brother, but found that his brother and the nobles of that land had made a treaty with the Lubeckers: "Convenit tandem inter nos et Lubicenses, inter ducatus nostros Slesuig, Holsatiam, Stormariæ, harumque terrarum incolas et Lubicenses, ex omni parte, treugas servari debere, nobis, regnis nostris, et eorum incolis ab hujuscemodi treugis omnino seclusis." Offered to submit the dispute to arbitration, but this was declined. Requests therefore that James will arrest and seize the goods of any Lubeckers in his kingdom and urge England to do the same. If any of James' subjects will waylay the Lubeckers by sea at their own expense next summer they shall have letters of marque. Requests a pardon for James Sliig, a homicide. Sunderborg, 22 Nov. 1509.

From the ambassadors at Rome, 26 Nov.—The English ambassador, bp. of York, arrived on the 24th. He received graciously their excuse that, because of the excommunication, they could not meet him, and said his King was for them and would break with France. The letter he brought from the King is said to have caused the Pope's illness. The Pope congratulated Card. Corner upon the capture of Vicenza; but is more obstinate than ever, and on learning the doings of the Venetian armada in the Po, sent to reinforce Ferrara.

253. FERDINAND, KING OF ARAGON, to QUEEN KATHARINE.
Has learnt by her letter in cipher, and the King's in plain writing, that the King would prevent the destruction of Venice and enter alliance with him, the King of the Romans, Queen of Castile and Prince Charles; also what the King wrote to the King of France concerning Venice, and the reply, and the subsequent rumor that France would make war on England. Begs her to show her husband that secrecy is necessary in great enterprises and that nothing should be written except in cipher. The King has well expressed what concerns Venice, and Ferdinand has already therein moved the Pope (who appears well inclined) and also the King of France, but means to keep all secret until he has won over the King of the Romans. Suggests that the King likewise should enter secret negociations with the Pope and King of the Romans, and that Madame Margaret, who lately sent her secretary hither, is a fit person to negociate the alliance. The intention of France is to attack Venice by sea and land next summer. Further observations on the necessity of secrecy and the objects of the alliance. The answer which the King of France made to the King of England seems wanting in courtesy, but the King must not show any resentment as yet. The rumour of war is vain, for as long as Ferdinand lives the French will never attack England. They may, however, sow dissension with Scotland. As the King and the King of Scots are brothers it would not become them to quarrel. If necessary the new ambassador, Don Luis Caroz, could go to Scotland to mediate, as he did in the late reign. Cannot grant safe conducts to the Venetian vessels, first because they are excommunicated, and secondly because any visible partiality would weaken his power in subsequent negociation for the preservation of Venice. Has, however, ordered his officers not to hurt or detain them. Endd.: Mansilla, 28 Nov. 1509. See Spanish Calendar, Vol. II, No. 27.
