	* * * Presented the letters written with her own hand. The King said he had heard that she had injured (fort picqué) him in England, and he had also to complain of the Emperor. Replied that these were all lies. When he had read her letter he seemed conciliated. * * * When the writer began to speak of what the King of England had done for her nephew, the King said he knew it and that they were 1,300 and if Charles of Gueldres would not come to an appointment he could not complain if he was chastised, but the King hoped that his commissary now sent to the Duke would arrange something. * * * Valence, 6 July.

The bishop of Autun has arrived at Florence, in the name of the King of France, to ask that Signory and the Cardinals to grant the city of Pisa for the new Council, for 1 Sept. * * *

	From Andrea Badoer, London, 10 Aug. (sic).—Good will of the King to aid the Pope, especially since the loss of Bologna. Details of Hironimo Bonvixi's dealing with the French ambassador. Bonvixi confessed that he was employed by the Cardinal of Pavia. A league is concluded between the Pope, Spain and England, against France, leaving room for entry of the Emperor, and of Venice when agreed with the Emperor.

	Bull of indiction of a General Council to meet at the Lateran on Monday, 19 April 1512.
	The preamble states, at great length, that certain cardinals who were accompanying the Pope towards Bologna, for recovery of certain lands of the Church, turned aside to Florence and thence, when summoned by the Pope, fled in disguise to Pavia, and subsequently published the indiction of a Council, on the ground that 10 years had passed without a General Council, contrary to the constitution of the Council of Constance beginning Frequens, and to the Pope's oath to hold a Council within two years after his creation, and it was unlikely that the Pope, whose crimes were to be a subject for the Council, would summon it. The indiction was fortified by feigned proxies of the Emperor and King of France.
	Proofs of the Pope's efforts for a Council, of the right of indiction belonging to the Pope, of the invalidity of the constitution Frequens, and of the falsehood of their charges against him; and he points out that their Council to meet within three months and fourteen days could hardly be notified from Milan to all Christendom in that time, much less attended, that Pisa after 14 years of almost continual siege has hardly a house with walls unbroken and that access to it is unsafe now that Florence and Sienna are at war. He annuls their indiction forbids attendance at their Council, and subjects to interdict the places where it shall be held.
	This Council at the Lateran is for peace among Christians and an expedition against the Infidels now infesting Sicily and occupying Jerusalem. The Pope is aware of the brevity of the time, but he had written to the King of France and other princes about beginning a Council within the date prescribed and wished to give no handle for calumny by deferring it. 	* * * Doubts that the Emperor's enterprise will have to be put off to next year,—unless peace is made in the interval. Haro is despatched to the King of Aragon with answer to what he brought. The ambassador of England, who went on to Stercin to-day, returned to the Emperor and had audience. Mons. de Gurce, who has returned to Insprück, will be to-morrow with the Emperor. The ambassador of Aragon is with him at Insprück where Haro's despatch was made. Has taken leave of the Emperor and departs as soon as Gurce arrives. Mathan, 20 July, at midnight.

22 July. Le Glay, Corresp. de Max. et de Marg., I., 410.	819. MARGARET OF SAVOY to MAXIMILIAN.
	He is doubtless aware of the great practices in Italy to oppose the enterprise which he and the King of France have against the Venetians. Would like to be wise in order to counsel him, but these matters pass her understanding. He knows what is offered on behalf of the Kings of Aragon and England and likewise what the King of France has done and can do for him; and although it would not become her, an inexperienced woman, to meddle in such affairs, duty compelled her to do what she has done and she begs him to take it in good part and bestir himself while there is yet time. The King of Aragon has sent her a confidential valet de chambre to declare that the Emperor's suspicion touching Naples was unfounded; and perhaps he has given like assurance by Haro, who is with the Emperor. Persists in her opinion that he should make a secret alliance with the Kings of Aragon and England, his relatives, as necessary for the security of himself and his son (Charles), and by their advice appoint with the Venetians provided that they restore his pieces and submit to reason, as it is said they offer to do. without, however, doing any wrong to the King of France whose amity he ought to entertain. 	From Andrea Badoer, London, 26 July.—The King has told him he will shortly hear good news from Rome which the Signory will know already. The King has sent 1,000 archers and other troops to help Madame Margaret against Gueldres aided by France. The Queen Widow, who was mother of King Edward, was dead of the plague, and the King was troubled. The King thought it strange that Badoer had no news from the Signory. Complains that they send neither news nor money.

30 July.	828. [1826.] JAMES IV. to the PROCURATOR of the KING OF PORTUGAL at ANTWERP.
R. MS. 13 B. II., 55 (No. 147), B.M. Ep. Reg. Scot., I., 120.	Received, 15 July, his letters, dated Antwerp, 24 June, complaining that, after a whole year, no commissioner has come from James for settlement of the dispute with Portugal, and that the Portuguese had committed no offence against the Scots, or, if they had, it was under another King. The Scotch complain, not of a private Portuguese ship, but of the Portuguese fleet, which sailed for the purpose from Sluys and gratuitously robbed certain Scotchmen, cruelly slaughtering others—an act denounced by the senate of Burgundy. Reprisals were decreed in the time of James III., and had been repeatedly suspended by the King's authority, that the dispute might be amicably terminated. Four years ago a herald was sent to Portugal, who returned without being able to accomplish his mission. Nevertheless, last year, at the instance of Edward Ferdinandi, Scotland again revoked letters of reprisals; but nothing was done, and the year expired. Has again forbidden them, in consequence of the procurator's letters, and will send commissioners to Bruges to settle the affair. Edinburgh, 30 July 1511.

	From the ambassador, Rome, 31 July.—The bulls summoning the Council at the Lateran for the week after Easter not yet expedited. The King of France is now lord of Bologna and the Pope's captain discharged. The Pope has written to Spain, England and everywhere of this, and to the Emperor "fulminando di Bologna." A nuncio called Hironimo Bonvixi, of Lucca, sent from Bologna to England, to solicit the King against France, revealed all to the French ambassador. The King arrested him and wrote to the Pope who replied that the King should do justice upon him. The King well disposed to the Pope since the taking of Bologna. Citation of the three Cardinals.

	Has received his great letter, showing how he is compelled to renew the war in Italy against the Venetians. The Emperor complains of the Pope, who had induced him to make war upon them, and after they had been cut to pieces by the French, assisted them to recover their strength, when the Pope had regained his own. Maximilian desires Henry's consent to a Council called to promote peace in Christendom, an expedition against the Turks, and a reformation of the Church. Thinks Maximilian has been stirred by the enemies of the Venetians to take part in so bloody a war, which is not in accordance with the mildness of his disposition. They have often spent their blood and treasure in opposing the common enemy, and defended the Pope against tyrants. Regrets that he is so incensed against the vicar of God as to seek to make his faults public. Even if it be right to call a Council without the Pope's authority, which all are bound to respect, where could it be held with safety to his Holiness ? In Italy, where everything is fluctuating ? In Germany, whither he would have to pass between enemies ? Needs say nothing of France. A more distant country would not be safe or honorable. Thinks those who have advised this Council have been actuated by private animosity, and that it will do more harm than good. Urges the Emperor to recall his act, or impose silence on the assembly, as Wingfield will explain.

	Has divers times written her advice upon the quarrel with the Venetians which he could not put in better hands than those of the Kings of England and Aragon who show daily their desire for his honour, especially the King of England. Urges him to condescend to an appointment. He should on no account meddle in this Council at Pisa, but leave it to the Pope whom it concerns. He should also thank the King of England for his assistance to her in the affair of Gueldres and pray him to continue it as necessity shall require. He might send the letters to her, to forward to the said King.

	70. Sir Henry Wiatt. Grant, in fee, of the lands which were given him by patents (now surrendered) of Hen. VII., viz. (1) pat. 7 Feb., 2 Hen. VII., granting him for life a messuage in Watelyng Street, London, in the parish of Allhallows, between tenements formerly of Roger Mone and John Whyte on west and east, formerly held by Robert Greves, tailor, granted by Richard III. to Sir Thomas Bourghchier of Ledes. Kent; and (2) pat. 19 Feb., 3 Hen. VII., for 60 years, of the custody of lands called Maydencote, parcel of lands called "Magorneys landes," Berks, which came to the hands of Hen. VI. on the death of Sir John Tiptoft, and were formerly held by Thomas Hurdegrove and John Rogers; and also grant of two messuages and land in Wotton and Quynton, Northt., forfeited by Sir Richard Empson.
