From Andrea Badoer, London, 3 July.—The King crowned, 25 June, and jousts held for that and his marriage with the King of Spain's daughter, widow of his elder brother, with whom she lived six months. The King has given his sister to Archduke Charles. Badoer went afterwards and made appropriate speeches to the King, who had heard of the rout of Venetians by the French, the news having come in seven days. He expressed regret and promised to befriend the Signory, and call a Parliament upon the matter. The bp. of Winchester friendly.

124. JULIUS II. to JAMES ABP. OF GLASGOW.
Formerly granted authority to James King of Scots to nominate to the then abbot of Dumfermlin, the archd. of St. Andrews and the Provost of Jerusalem, 30 persons for ecclesiastical benefices (conditions described); which authority he was afterwards reported to have revoked, and therefore renewed it by brief. As the abp., who held the said monastery by Apostolic grant and dispensation, was deputed bp. of Galloway and of the King's Chapel, and from thence was afterwards translated to Glasgow, this is to declare that his authority to proceed with regard to the nominations remains unchanged. 29 July. Egerton MS., 616, f. 45. B.M. 127. [368.] QUEEN KATHARINE to FERDINAND OF ARAGON.
Cannot express her delight at receiving Ferdinand's letter by this courier, and knowing that he has always held her "his true daughter and servant." It is the only thing she values in this life. The chief cause which makes her love the King her husband, is that he is so true a son to Ferdinand. Has performed, as desired, the office of her father's ambassador. Henry puts himself entirely in his hands. These kingdoms "of your highness" are in great tranquillity, and show great affection to the King her lord, and to herself. The time passes in continual feasting. Hopes Ferdinand will crown his favors by showing he counts her lord and herself his true children. [Here occurs a short passage in cipher] favor. Trusts Ferdinand will credit her letters, though he has not answered all that was in them, and cannot imagine what disservice was done her by the comendador De la Membrilla, and the topics he touched upon. If her confessor were the worst man in the world, would have kept him and made him a bishop only to give the lie to the Ambassador. Being what he is, should feel the more annoyed if Ferdinand thought of removing him. Janina de Cuer, her chamberlain, and other servants, return home. Ordered them to be paid yearly at the same rate as the officials in Ferdinand's household; Alonso de Esquivel for six years, the others for eight. All the help she gave them was for Ferdinand's sake. If they have been overbold he must punish them; but trusts he will afterwards pardon them on her account. Greenwich, 29 July.
Her lord requests a jennet, a Neapolitan, and a Sicilian horse, by the first messenger.

130. MAXIMILIAN to MARGARET OF SAVOY.
*** As to what she writes of the ring sent by Madame Marie of England to his son (Charles) and the sending of another jewel in return, leaves that to her discretion. Touching the Ambassador of the King of Aragon who was in England and is coming to her with instructions, cannot advise her until he knows what these instructions are. On the breaking off of the interview between the King of France and him, he sent as ambassadors to that King the bps. of Gurce and Brixen, princes of the Empire, to whom the King proposed an army by sea to besiege and take the city of Venice; but, as the French army was insufficient for that, and the King of Aragon declined to meddle in it without a preliminary agreement with the Emperor, the King of France proposed, secondly, that such an agreement be made forthwith so as to hasten the expedition against the Venetians, otherwise, if the ships and army of Aragon left he would withdraw his. Explains further how he was induced to make it. Ynan, 30 July, 1509.

131. [380.] DACRE to [the COUNCIL].
Prays discharge (for which he has "sundry times heretofore" made suit to the King) of—1. Divers bonds wrongfully made for the payment of 2,000 marks, in the half of which he was bound to Sir George Tailboys for keeping the castle of Herbetell, which the late King Henry VII. took of Sir George, and retained after Dacre had been discharged of the keeping of Herbotell. 2. Of 500l., in which he was bound to the late King for keeping the peace anenst the Lord Graystoke, late deceased, and for his own and others' appearance in the Star Chamber, duly kept, with the exception of Robert Skelton, slain on the Borders. 3. Of 200l., in which he was bound to Henry VII., conjointly with William Barons, then Master of the Rolls, Sir Ralph Grey, and others, forfeited by reason of the delay of the Council in accepting Sir George Manners in lieu of William Barons, deceased. 4. Of a recognizance of 3,000 marks, turned by Empson and Dudley into a debt payable at Michaelmas following, against all right. 5. Of 1,000 marks in which he was bound, with George Lord Fitzhughe, for his mother Dame Mabel Dacre, accused of having ravished one Ric. Huddlestone, a ward of the late King, for which she was committed to prison, and remained there three-quarters of a year. Of this, 600 marks have been paid. Requests a discharge of the residue, seeing that Huddlestone was never a King's ward, and that "Elizabeth Huddlestone, her daughter, wife of the said Richard, being attendant upon the same Dame Mabel in the foresaid castle, remembering her mother was so unrighteously daungiered and troubled for her causes, took such heaviness and sorrow that she died in the said castle, with other the said Dame Mabel's kinsfolk and servants."
