Had received his letter, dated Greenwich, 8 July, announcing his marriage with Katharine of Aragon. Hopes that by his help will be done against the Turks what his father, Henry VII., has obtained immortal glory by procuring. The writer is not now at Rome, but at Milan, on an embassy to the King of France, but has despatched a messenger to Rome to inform them of the news. Wishes it to be known how devoted he is to England. Milan, 5 Aug. 1509.

6 Aug. 1509.—The King of France has left Milan for France. As all efforts to appease the Emperor failed, the Venetians made war and recovered Padua. Cruelties of the Emperor's troops. Badoer must try to obtain help from the King, if only the writing of letters to the King of France to abstain from war, and to the Emperor to receive their ambassador, who might then negociate a confederacy between the Pope, Emperor, Signory and others for the benefit of Christendom. If the King ask again about the Flanders galleys, Badoer shall say they were intended to be sent as usual, but the merchants are afraid to take the risk, so widespread is the mischief caused by this war.

Bothe, "of the jewel house with my Lady's grace," on the one part, and Dr. Tomson, master of Christ's College, Cambridge, on the other, witnessing receipt of jewels by the Master of Christ's College from [Lady Margaret's] bequests, viz., two crucifixes, a "garnish for a crostaf to be borne in procession," a foot for a cross to rest in on the altar, and two chalices (weight and description).

Dygby, witnessing that Sir Henry has received of Sir John the plate, jewels, and goods of Edmund Dudley, attainted, which Sir John was commanded to take into his custody at Dudley's house, in the parish of St. Swithin beside London Stone, in Candelwyke Street. Polo Capello to his brother Philip, from Rome, 15 Aug.—Reception of news of the capture of the Marquis of Mantua. The King of France ill. Sea fight between Venetians and French off Sicily. Pope and Cardinals gone to San Praxeida, for 3 or 6 days, for feast of Our Lady.
P.S.—King of France left Abia Grassa eight days ago, to pass the Mountains. It is said that the Kings of England and Scotland have opened war on France and that his passing confirms the report.
The same, 17 Aug.—New league between the Pope and France. France has spoken ill of the King of the Romans. News from Naples of naval affairs.

30 Aug., 1509.—Received his letters of 10 and 19 July, and approve his suggestion of Lady Margaret's mediation with the Emperor, which the Lord Privy Seal said, was adopted. Describe their capture of the Marquis of Mantua. The combined forces of the Emperor, France, Pope, &c., are near Padua. Think the Emperor well inclined, but incited against them by France, who is now at Grenoble, scheming to make himself lord of Italy, and then of the world. He despises the Emperor and will make an exclusive league with the Pope, abandoning the Florentines and Ferrara. Their unjust treatment by the Pope. Badoer shall ask the King to write to the King of France to abstain from attacking the Signory; and urge him to pursue the subject of his motion to Madame Margaret's ambassadors, so as to make a league with the Emperor and Venetians possible and to write to the Pope, as his father did.
P.S.—Have just heard of the capture of Filippo Maria dei Rossi and defeat of some of the Emperor's cavalry near Vicenza.

Andrea Badoer, from England _ (blank) Aug.—The abbot of Fécamp, a fat man, has come ambassador from France. Obtaining audience at Westminster, he said he came to confirm the peace, in response to Henry's letters asking Lewis to be his friend. Henry turned to his people and said, "Who wrote this letter? I ask peace of the King of France, who daren't look at me, let alone make war !" With that he rose and would hear no more. Afterwards there was tilting at the ring, and the Abbot, who was invited, finding no seat reserved for him, was leaving in anger, when the King called him back and gave him a cushion. Has sent the King word of the taking of Padua.

"These novelles hath been here since the King's Coronation." First (sent to me by Sir Edward Ratcliff and others) that my lord of Northumberland's servants said that "my lord of Buckingham should be protector of England and that their master should rule all from Trent north, and have Berwick and the marches; and that such grants as I had of offices was before the King was crowned and of none effect." Richard Tempest reported to me their saying, at coming into Craven from London, "that if their lord had not rooms in the North as his father had it should not long be well." On St. Lawrence Day William Feherre, a poor gentleman, coming from London, showed me that Gilson, Ratclif and Typpyng, "servants to my said lord, in Saint Martynes in London, in his place, showed to him that Sir Risse ap Thomas was gone to the sea, fled forth of his country." Trusts to get some of the bringers of these tales, who are but knaves, craftsmen and beggars. It is the saying of every market man from London "that the Lord Privy Seal, seeing of his own craft and policy he cannot bring himself to rule the King's grace and put out of favour the Earl of Surrey, the Earl of Shrosbere, the bp. of Dorisme, Mr. Mernye, Mr. Brandon and the Lord Darcy, now he will prove another way which is to bring in and bolster himself to rule all with the Duke of Bukyngham and the Earl of Northumbr. And, doubtless, fast they curse and speak evil of my Lord Privy Seal beyond measure."
"My Lord, good it is to have a good eye, though much be but sayings. As I hear, I will warn you, my lord of Dorisme and Mr. Mernye whilst I live; and therefore show this as ye think seems good, to the King's Grace or otherwise." I keep Feeherre until I hear from you.
