	Last night John Farlian, serjeant of the King's tents (fn. 1) died. I and the bearer, William Stone, went this morning to Warwick Inn, where the King's tents and your lordship's lie, and locked the doors and charged the keeper that no man come there: the keys we caused his wife to lock up. Stone has had the ordering of my Lord Steward's tents; I hear he knows as much of this business as any man in London, and he desires to serve the King. Mr. Williamson and all we your servants apply to your business here. Your lordship's place in London, 26 July.

	I have received your lordship's letter of the 18th, conveying the King's pleasure and yours that I should allow John of Calais to repair to Court. I have delivered to him the letter sent to him and written the date of delivery upon it. Some men of this town who were lately in England say you wonder I have not written to you of Ralph Hare and the rest. I beg you will examine the letters I have written you, of which I have copies, and you will find that, in Lent or thereabouts [original text, a year past and more, corrected], I certified you of the congregation of the chief, being eight or nine, and where they kept their schools. 26 July.

	Thanks for your goodness to my son, which I beg you to continue, that by your good counsel he may the better serve my lord his master. I will be ordered by you and my lord for his advancement, and will disburse 100l. if I have reasonable time to prepare it. His elder brother agrees that he shall have, in recompense of his father's will, in discharge of condition of marriage therein contained, 10l. land. 27 July. Cleop. E. IV., 237. B. M. Wright's Suppression of the Monasteries, 213.	1321. DR. JOHN LONDON to [CROMWELL.]
	Has taken surrenders of Kyme, Noncotton, Irforthe, Fosse, and Hevenynges. Although everywhere religious persons "makith ther hondes," has rewarded them, paid off the servants, and left the houses undefaced and the bells and lead to the King, and yet has some plate and money above all charges to send to Mr. Thackre. Mr. John Henage, Mr. Wisman, and Mr. Cotton accompanied him. Has committed the custody of them,—Hevenynges, where there is much waste in the woods, to John Henage for Sir Thos. Henage, Noncotton to Mr. Skipwith, Kyme to lord Talboys' bailiff there, Irforde to Mr. Turwhyte, and Fosse, a beggarly poor house, to Mr. Philip Hobye. Many of these nuns were professed at 10 and 12 years and afterwards lived in imperfect chastity. They are wonderfully glad of that Act of Parliament that those professed under 21 years may marry. Many young monks and canons are perplexed that now, being priests, they may not return and marry. Most of them be nothing learned. Has counselled such to take bodily exercise and not sit lurking in the cloister idly.
	Had finished these Lincolnshire places when Mr. Freman brought him a commission for Bewvale Charterhouse, Notts, and Newstede priory. Of Bewvale Sir John Husey has custody and Sir John Beryn of Newstede. Found the prior of the Charterhouse in short gown and velvet cap ready for their coming and the proctor of the house in like apparel next day. "It were hard to get so many again into those houses I have be at as I have despatched; for in every house, as well of men as of women, they be in manner all gone that night I have taken their surrender, and straightway in new apparel." 	Ralph Hare and others who are to do penance in Calais fear to be imprisoned and further corrected by Lisle and the Council. Knows his lordship's discretion is such that no such monition is necessary, but requests he will let them do their penance quietly. Lambeth, 28 July. Signed.

	"The book of debts and rewards, with the costs and expenses of the Commissioners, time of the dissolution of the house," giving the list of rewards to the whole "familia abbatis" viz., the 16 brethren of the monastery, with the office held by each monk, and also dan John Bushe, curate of Holland Parva, three generosi, one of whom is designated "schoolmaster," 29 valecti (yeomen), two of whose names are erased, six brewers, nine cooks, of whom one name is struck out, five bigam' (qu. bigarii, carters)? and a ratcatcher, five boys and three "lavenders" (laundresses). Debts specified with the names of creditors. Signed: John Seyncler, Sir Wyllyam Pyrto[n], John Pekyns, Thomas Myldemaye.

	ii. Inventory of the monastery made by Sir John Seyntclere, Sir William Purton, John Pekynes, Thos. Mildemaye, and Fras. Jobson, commissioners for taking the surrender, 28 July 31 Hen. VIII., with valuation of the goods, by Adam Sampson, Jas. Beckes, Thomas Clerk, and John Causton, appraisers.
	The articles are classified under the heads, jewels and plate; ornaments of the church; in the great chamber; in the hall; in the kitchen; and so forth. Among the plate several articles are described in the margin as delivered to the abbot by my lord Chancellor's command, and with the assent of the Commissioners. Some others are reserved "undefaced till the King's pleasure be known." Signed as before.

28 July. R.O.	1327. ROUGIER BUS to JOHN SMITH.
	This is the third letter I have sent to you. I beg you will ask the Deputy of Calais to send me a letter signed by him, that I may have my money; for Jacop Spoor, of Bruges, says he has not received it from the Deputy. He says the Deputy has written to him that I have been at Calais, and because I had not a letter in the hand of Jacop Spoor, the Deputy would not give me any money; but this is a lie, for you told me when I was at Calais that he had delivered him money for me, and Spoor says he has not received it. 29 July. R.O.	1328. JOHN [HILSEY], Bp. of Rochester, to CROMWELL.
	On receiving his letters, on Sunday, 27 July, caused his scribe to copy out his days appointed, being sore sick in bed, and sent his steward to the bp. of London to Fullam with the said letters. He also was sick and asleep, and his servants refused to wake him or receive the said letters, nor would his secretary copy out his days appointed, saying he had none such authority. Sent again on the morrow and had a similar answer. Lambethe Marshe, 29 July. Signed.

	As Cromwell has told him his mind concerning the further impressions of the primer (fn. 3) that we have set out, desires him to declare to the printer, the bearer, (fn. 4) the privilege that he shall obtain by Cromwell's kindness between this and Christmas for the impressions of it, and to tell him whether the commandment to the rest of the printers shall be declared to them or printed in the primer. 29 July. R.O.	1331. The EARL OF BRIDGWATER and SIR THOMAS SPEKE.
	Depositions taken, 29 July, 31 Hen. VIII., before Sir Hugh Poulet and Wm. Portman, at my lord President's commandment, concerning an assembly made by the earl of Bridgwater, 30 June last, of some 18 of his servants, with intent to take Sir Wm. Balam, clerk, steward to Sir Thos. Speke, "to the intent to keep him until he had a Frenchman that was then in Mr. Speke's house." One of Speke's servants deposes that he was working in his master's meadow when a woman of Stokelynche warned him of the Earl's intent, and he and his fellow forthwith hastened to Whitelackington to warn Balam. The last deponent was sent by Balam, 26 June last, to the Earl "to know his pleasure, what he would with the said Sir William Balam." The Earl answered he would "speak with the priest himself in certain matters to make Sir Thomas Speke chafe when he came home." The deponent said that the law should determine any matters that might be. The Earl then said "it would not be determined without murder and that great murder would follow of it," but if the priest would come to him he should be safe to come and go.
	The deponents are John Hawkins, of Stokelinch, Ostrecer, John Danger, parson of Stokelinch, John Kennocke, of Atherston, John Horsey, of White Lackington and five others.

29 July. R.O.	1332. [LISLE to CROMWELL.]
	Reminds him of the letters sent to him by the vyntners and constables of this town (Calais) reporting "certain matters" otherwise than was done by the writer and others of the Council, in doing which they have committed perjury "in doing against their oaths" and broken the old ordinances. Doubts not their report is sufficiently proved to Cromwell to be untrue. Sends a copy of their letter, with their oath and the old ordinance. Wishes only the instigators to be punished. Asks his pleasure. Calais, 29 July.
	Their names are Geoffrey Loveday and John Brown, spears, Wm. Stevyns, John Sheperd, Wm. Marche, John Gavell, Hugh Fyllcokes, vynteners, and Rycher Ussher, and Benett Pellham, constables.

	Sends the examination of a priest and woman taken suspiciously at Croydon last Sunday, while he was at Lambeth. Came hither on Monday last. As there is no commission yet out for the due correction of such offenders by the Act, desires to know how to proceed. Croydon, 30 July. Signed.

	Concerning his connection with Julian Baily, which he had broken off in consequence of the Archbp.'s injunctions. She came to his house before 11 o'clock yesternight, but he refused to let her in.
	ii. Examination of Julian Bailie, alias Cutler, 28 July 31 Hen. VIII.
	Has been kept by Somer about three years. Was with him last night, till she heard a noise at her mother's door, when she fled to one Draper's house, where the watch found her.

30 July. R.O.	1334. MONTMORENCY to MARILLAC.
	Received his letters of the 23rd. Marillac will see the answer made by Francis, written with his own hand, to the king of England; after presenting which he is to get the King to put what he says in writing, that it may not be hereafter said that Marillac has written more or less than he ought. Even if he cannot get it in writing, however, he is to report the whole matter. Has given good and sure address to the packet of the king of England to his ambassador. Expects further information by D'Ampont about the affair of his brother, De la Roche[pot]. Chantilly, 30 July.

31 July. R.O.	1335. BARTOLOMEO COMPAGNI, of Florence, to CROMWELL.
	Has just received, along with his letters by the ordinary courier of Antwerp, the enclosed for the King, which he would have come to deliver in person, but for the opportunity of the bearer, Antonio Carsidoni. Does not know whence the letter comes: found it tied to letters of his own which he thinks were tied up in Antwerp in the house of his friend Alessandro di Poggio, merchant of Lucca. 31 July. R.O.	1336. JOHN HARRES to LADY LISLE.
	There will be a sessions in three weeks of deliverances, by the procurance of Sir John Horse and Master Thornelle, who will spend 100l. to hang me unless you help me. All is on account of "my porsches affetore (after) the ses (decease) offe my fathore." The King will be in Wiltshire within a fortnight, when they purpose to cast me away. Sir Anthony Hungerford, the sheriff, requires an answer from you within three weeks. 31 July.

	Thanks her for her kindness. My lord Chief Baron, my lord Sthorton (Stourton), Sir Edw. Wyllebe, Sir Edw. Hongerforde and Master Momparsone and Master Hasthlle have befriended him against his foes, Master Thornelle of Dorsetshire, Master Charles Chonkle (sic) and Sir John Horse, who had cast him away had it not been for the sheriff. Trusts my lord will help him to get his charter shortly, for they will stop it if possible. He is ruined without it.

31 July. R.O.	1338. SIR RIC. GRAYNFFELD to CROMWELL.
	When last with Cromwell, said he had no suit to the King for land or fee, but for liberty to do his affairs in these parts. Since then has bethought him that if he has not some piece of this suppressed land by purchase or gift "y schuld stond owte of the casse of fawe men of worschupp of thys reame." Is as glad as any man of the realm of the suppression of these orgulous persons and devourers of God's word and takers away of the glory of Christ, who he reckons were also takers away of the wealth of the realm "and spryys to the dewffelys bysschupp of Rome." That his heirs may be of the same mind for their own profit, would gladly buy some of these suppressed lands in these parts and will find the King sureties for the payment of his money, and sell part of his inheritance to pay the rest. The lands he wants are the priory of Launston, meadows and gardens, and a parcel of the demesne called Nuhowsse, valued by the King's surveyors at 14l.; the manor of Norton, 19l. If the King will give him the purchase of 8l., will give 20 years' purchase for the rest. If the lands are now worth more, will give it, and if the woods are worth more than 40l., will answer the overplus. Has written to Mr. Wrezelegh to remind Cromwell of this and to ask advice about another matter. My house at Stowe, 31 July. Signed.

31 July. R.O.	1341. ANTHOINETTE DE SAVEUSEZ to LADY LISLE.
	I have received your letter and two rossinboz, of which I find one "non ectre de valuasion," and as the bearer tells me you got it changed in the town, I beg you to send it back, as they make great difficulty about gold (des oors) in Flanders. I am not at present pressed for money (hatte de l'argent). You have paid me 4s. more than I owe. They only ask for 36s. I am willing to wait six weeks, and will not send the money till I have despatched half a dozen men's bonnets that I received with those I last sent, and of the same kind of work. I made your recommendations to Mons. and Madame de Riou before receiving your letter. I have today received news of the illness of a daughter of Madame de Riou, who is in an abbey of Chartreuses intending to be a religieuse and I leave today to see her. Compliments to the Deputy. 	Has had no answer to his letter asking him to discover the intention of the Card. of Trani concerning the cession of his supposed right to the rectory of Glasgow to Henry Synclar, of James' Council. Is sure that the Cardinal would not have acted as he has done if he had known the laws of Scotland or the character of old Duncan. His negociation with Duncan, however, cannot have advanced very far. H. Synclar, to end the difficulty, a year ago conferred a benefice of little less worth on one Ard, titular of the rectory. Requests him to do all he can to procure the transference of the card of Trani's rights to Synclar. Falkland, prid kal. Aug. 1539.

	Has received the letters of 5, 13, and 23 July and that written from London, which was brought by D'Ampont. As to the affair mentioned in that of 23 July, writes in his own hand to the king of England. Marillac shall deliver the letter, after reading it, and inform Francis by express courier what that King says, and shall try to get it in writing. Is about to start for Picardy. 	Prays God to send a good conclusion touching the matter of Clefes. The news out of France is as much as to say that the King shall erc long have as fair weather made to him on both sides as ever he had, but there is no doubt the King can perceive and handle all well enough. 	Was executor to his cousin William Boughton, till he married his second wife, mother to this young man his heir, when he named her executrix, but would have the writer continue executor though he "was then gone fro the Temple." When she died Boughton intended to make her father executor with Seyntgerman, and for this divers things were interlined in a copy of the first will sent to Cromwell. "If my lady can prove that be after that will made her executrix, then the power is in her." Would use that power for all his children, both him that he had by lady Baryngeton and the other; and if the daughter be not remembered now, she is in hard case. Mr. Wyllngeton's offer is fair, if he will find sureties, and she have the ordering of the lands and meddle not with the farm of Pypwell. If my Lady had the chief house, she should redeem the land in mortgage to Wylloughby. Is not able to come to Cromwell himself. Will not say my Lady was content with the sale of Browneswover; but if she had not released her jointure in it Mr. Inglefelde would not have bought it. When she asked recompense of the farm of Pypwel she was hard on the heir. She should have the 3l. 15s. land in Thurluston but for life, with remainder to her son. Leaves the interest of his three children in his Lordship's hands.

	Is sick and cannot come to Cromwell. Asks him to write to Mr. George Gyfford and Mr. Burgoyn, now at Coventry, to stay from pulling down the churches of the late Priory and White Friars there, till the council of the city can wait on Cromwell for the redemption of them and their appurtenances within the city walls. These two churches are required, as there are but two other parish churches within all the city. Intends to view, between this and Michaelmas, the enclosures complained of in cos. Warw., Leic., and Northt., and to certify offences. Signed.

[July?] R. O.	1351. GREGORY BOTOLF, Clerk, to the LORD DEPUTY and COUNCIL of CALAIS.
	His deposition concerning a conversation between him and one Tornaye, soldier of the King's retinue of Calais. On the 12th inst. (originally, on Saturday last) (fn. 6) after evensong in the choir, resorted into the body of Our Lady church to hear the reader of the Bible. He read St. Paul's epistle to the Romans, and afterwards turned the book and read "in" the prologue which is the translators' introduction, showing how that epistle should be understood; then returned to the Holy Scripture. I walked up to the choir, leaving the reader, but returning again when he was reading the said prologue, I said to him with a "convenient loudness," "Torner, it shall be well done that ye declare to the hearers or congregation when ye read the Holy Scripture and when an expositor." He answered me in grief, I know not what, but I said to him again "That which ye read last was no Holy Scripture." He then, "in his next English," would reason with me of the King's injunctions, but finding his grief increased and the congregation disturbed, I desired him to read what he pleased. Again he reasoned with me contentiously, and I was much abashed. Wherefore "I came to the book, offering my hand to have turned it, saying unto him, If ye will not read I pray you let me. He then answered, ye shall not read here until I have done. Then answered I him with this last answer : Ye do not well now, sith ye will not read yourself, nother let me." As he continued perverse I spoke aloud to the congregation, having a testament of large volume in my hand, and turning it to the said prologue, I said, "Friends. I shall read unto you the same thing wherein he left, whereby ye shall, according to the translator's meaning, the better understand the epistle of St. Paul to the Romans at all times hereafter." I then began to read the prologue, and continued, I suppose, nearly an hour or three-quarters. I submit humbly to your discretions.

	Thanks for kindness shown during his exile in England. Returned to Wittenberg, 9 July, and was well received by the chiefs of the University and the Court. Before that, the statutes of your country (decreta vestracia) were abroad in Nuremberg and throughout Germany, and the bp. of Rome's party were very triumphant, hoping that they would prove a blow to the pious cause we profess. I excused the King, you, Canterbury, &c., and laid the blame upon the bishops, as enemies of the Gospel. Did so hoping that you would get them softened. The Germans, both on account of the whole Church and of the good men there, grieve that by such examples the Pope's cruelty is strengthened. The Papists boast that the Emperor, with the help of the French and English, is about to make war upon those who profess the pious doctrine. Although our people would prefer peace they will not be terrified into giving up the pious cause, and now, even under Duke George of Saxony, who was most hostile to it, the churches are being reformed; whilst many cities in Bavaria and the Palatinate are beginning to embrace it. Cannot write much of himself as yet, as he has but recently arrived here, but the Prince's court encourages him to expect election into the University. There has been for some days at Wittenberg an Englishman who calls himself a kinsman (conjunctus) of Sir Francis Brian. Philip (Melanchthon) says he was also at Frankfort, and was there seen by Christopher (Mont). Here there was a suspicion that he was a spy of Cardinal Pole, for he said he had been a long time in Italy, and some papers of his were found in which he had noted many things for the Pope against Luther. If he write anything thither, do not believe his fables.

Raynwyk, draper, dwells, on the south (sic); which chief mansion or tavern and other premises lately belonged to the abbey called "lez Mynores," without Algate of the said city; in as full manner as Eliz. Salvage, the last abbess, held the same.
	Also grant to the said Martin of all the gardens now called "le More," and formerly "le Moore mede," now in the occupation of the same Martin, in the parish of St. Leonard in Shoredyche, within the precinet of the ditch where water comes down and flows back from a well called "Dame Agnes Clere," and also from the ditch of Halywell towards the north, and the soil of the garden of the prior and convent of the hospital of St. Mary without Bishopisgate of the said city on the east, and the close and meadows called Brownesclose, late in the tenure of Hugh Banks, merchant tailor, of London, on the west, and a field called "le Morefelde" and "le Townediche" between "le Newe Brydgehouse" leading to Bethelem, and a tenement called "le Doggishouse" on the south; which gardens lately belonged to the Carthusian house or monastery of the Salutation of the Mother of God near the said city of London, now dissolved, in as full manner as Wm. Trafford, the last prior, held the same.
