Tuesday before the Feast of St. Gregory [12 March], 22 Edward III. [A.D. 1347-8], came William de Hatfeld, goldsmith, who had married Agnes, widow of Reginald Gargoyl, goldsmith, before Thomas Legy, the Mayor, John Hamond and Richard de Basingestoke, Aldermen, and Thomas de Maryns, the Chamberlain, and acknowledged that he had received the sum of £20 from Robert, brother of the said Agnes, and Simon de Berkynge, goldsmith, surveyor of the will of the said Reginald, in trust for Johanna, daughter of the said Reginald Sureties, viz., John de Hatfeld, draper, and Robert de Hatfeld, brothers of the aforesaid William, Robert Sporoun, and Walter de Benyngtone, mercer.

The same day came Agnes, widow of William de Chayham, before Thomas Legy, the Mayor, Richard de Berkynge, Alderman, and Thomas de Maryns, the Chamberlain, and acknowledged herself guardian of Margaret, Lucy, and Agnes her daughters and of their property, under the will of her late husband. (fn. 1) Sureties, viz., Laurence Sely, skinner, and Matthew, son of Thomas le Barber de Bredstrete.

Writ to the Mayor, Aldermen, and Sheriffs for search to be made if there be any ordinances in the City's Chamber for putting down nuisances arising from the sale of small victuals (minuta victualia) and other merchandise in the highways of Chepe, Cornhull, and elsewhere, and if there be any such ordinances therein enrolled to cause them forthwith to be observed. Indenture between the Abbot and Convent of Gerondone (fn. 2) of the Cistercian Order in the diocese of "Nicholl" (fn. 3) and Dame Mary de St. Pol, Countess of Pembroke, touching a chantry founded in the Hermitage near Crepelgate (fn. 4) for the soul of Aymer de Valence, late Earl of Pembroke, (fn. 5) which chantry she had endowed with two tenements, viz., one in Fletestrete which she had by feoffment of William de Hales, "armurer," and the other in Shitebournelane, (fn. 6) which she had by feoffment of Gilbert le Palmere. Dated the Feast of the Nativity St. John Bapt [24 June], A.D. 1347.

Monday after the Feast of Annunciation B.M. [25 March], 22 Edward III. [A.D. 1348], came Thomas, son of Thomas de Porkelee, goldsmith, before William de Caustone, Alderman, and Thomas de Maryns, the Chamberlain, and acknowledged he had received from Stephen le Cook and John Darry, executors of "Alyna," widow of William de Bolingbroke, (fn. 7) the sum of 5 marks and certain household goods of the value of 38s. 2d., bequeathed by the said "Alina" to Johanna her daughter, since married to John Sporoun, apprentice to the aforesaid Thomas son of Thomas, to hold the same in trust for the said John Sporoun and Johanna his wife. Surety, viz., John de Brauncestre.

At a congregation of Thomas Leggy, the Mayor, the Aldermen, the Sheriffs, and an immense commonalty on Friday after the Feast of St. John ante portam Latinam [6 May], 22 Edward III. [A.D. 1348], John, son of John Gylessone de Refham, adjudged the punishment of the pillory for selling bad meat to Agnes la Ismongerer (fn. 8).

Grant by Thomas de Abberbury to John Kyng, painter, and Alice his wife of a tenement at the corner of Addellane (fn. 9) in the parish of St. Alban in Wodestrete to hold the same for the term of their respective lives and for one year after their decease, at an annual rent of 60s. Writ to the Sheriffs forbidding the holding of jousts and tournaments in the City, now that the truce with France had recently terminated, and ordering the exercise of arms in their stead, for the defence of the realm. (fn. 10) Witness the King at Westminster, 14 July, 22 Edward III. [A.D. 1348].

Lease by Nicholas Guillim, apothecary, to Vivian Rogeroni de Luca, apothecary, of a certain shop in the parish of St. Benedict Shorhog held by the said Nicholas for a term of years under Sir Ralph Bigot, Knt, and John Bigot his son; to hold the same to the said Vivian for the remainder of the aforesaid term, in the same manner as formerly it was held by John Adami, apothecary. Dated 12 June, A.D. 1347, Geoffrey de Wychingham being Mayor, John de Croydone and William Clapitus, Sheriffs. Acquittance by Benedict, son of Thomas de Betoyne, to Brother Philip de Thame, Prior of the Hospital of St. John de Clerkenewelle, for his yearly pension of 5 marks paid by the hands of Sir John de Pulteneye, Knt., viz., for one year from the Feast of the Nativity of St. John Bapt. [24 June], 21 Edward III. [A.D. 1347], to the same Feast in the following year. Dated Monday after the Feast of St. James, Ap. [25 July], 22 Edward III. [A.D. 1348].

Acknowledged before Thomas de Maryns, the Chamberlain, and a bond for the annuity delivered to the said Benedict on Saturday after the Feast of St. Peter ad Vincula [1 Aug.], 22 Edward III. [A.D. 1348].

Writ to the Mayor and Sheriffs notifying the appointment of John Marreys as the King's Alnager (fn. 11) of cloth, canvas, &c., within the realm, to hold the said office for life in the same manner as others have held by grant of the King's ancestors, and ordering that proclamation be made to that effect. Witness the King at Westminster, 18 May, 22 Edward III. [A.D. 1348].

Writ to the same, notifying the appointment of William de Stanhop as deputy for the above John Marreys in his office of Alnager, and bidding them to acknowledge him as such. Witness the King at Westminster, 26 July, 22 Edward III. [A.D. 1348].

Be it remembered that the above two writs remain on the files of Pleas of Land for the twenty-second year of King Edward III.

Scriptum Joh'is de Gildesburgh per Maior' Alderm' et co'itatem.

Grant by Thomas Leggy, the Mayor, the Aldermen, and the rest of the citizens to John de Gildesburgh, fishmonger, of the lane called "Desebournelane," in the parish of St. Mary de Somersete in the Ward of Queenhithe, between the tenement of Sir Edward de Montacute, Knt., and Alice his wife, on the east, and the tenement late of Walter Gladewyn on the west; the said lane being 215 feet in length down to the Thames, and 7 feet in width, except near the Thames, when it is of the width of a King's ell. The grantee is to make a gutter of prescribed dimension down the lane to the Thames to draw off the water from the highways in the neighbourhood, (fn. 15) and to pay an annual rent of 2s. into the Chamber of the Guildhall. Dated Friday after the Feast of St. Michael [29 Sept.], 22 Edward III. [A.D. 1348].

Writ to the Sheriffs for proclamation to be made for such men-at-arms, hoblers, archers, and others, as were willing to serve the King abroad, to be at Sandwich on Sunday before the Feast of SS. Simon and Jude [28 Oct.] next at the latest. Witness the King at Westminster, 8 Oct., 22 Edward III. [A.D. 1348].

Securitas facta proeisdem bonis.

Thursday after the Feast of St. Luke [18 Oct.], 22 Edward III. [A.D. 1348], came John de Potenhale, woodmonger, one of the executors of John Broun de Fletestrete, before Richard Lacer, Alderman, and Thomas de Maryns, the Chamberlain, and acknowledged that he had received, with the assent of Elena their mother, certain sums of money and chattels in trust for John and Alice, the children of the aforesaid John and Elena. Sureties, viz., Richard de Potenhale, John de Slappelee, Thomas de Potenhale, and Simon Broun, woodmongers. The guardianship, however, of the said children was entrusted to the mother, at her own request, together with certain silver plate.

The release from guardianship of the aforesaid Alice appears in the book marked "G," folios lxvii.

Friday after the Feast of St. Martin [11 Nov.], 22 Edward III. [A.D. 1348], came Alice, widow of John de Lauvare, before John Lovekyn, the Mayor, the Aldermen, and the Chamberlain, and acknowledged the receipt of certain sums of money in trust for Robert, Simon, and Richard, children of the said John de Lauvare. Sureties, viz., William de St. Alban, "chaundeler," William Albon, "felmongere," John de Thrillowe, "cotiller," John de Flete, "cotiller," Roger de Caumpes, ironmonger, and Gilbert Curteys, mercer.

Afterwards, viz., on Wednesday the 4th March, 23 Edward III. [A.D. 1348-9], John Payn, weaver (tixtor), elected bailiff, loco the aforesaid Richard, deceased.

Vaginar' jur'.

Friday after the Feast of St. Edmund the King [20 Nov.], 22 Edward III. [A.D. 1348], Stephen de Excestre, John Fichet, John de Ely, Richard Brond, Robert Deverons (Deverous?), and Robert Petlyngge, sheathers (vaginar'), sworn to keep the articles of the mistery and to supervise all workers thereof, &c.

Assignment by John de Pritewelle, "poleter," and Cristina his wife, to John de St. Alban, ironmonger, of lease of a certain tenement in the parish of All Hallows near London Wall, the property of Robert de Stratford, cordwainer, and Dionisia his wife, for a term of forty years, the assignee paying to the said Robert and Dionisia 20s. yearly, and 4s. yearly to the House of St. Katherine near the Tower. The said Robert and Dionisia reserve to themselves the right to half the fruit growing on the fruit-trees on the premises. Dated Saturday the eve of St. Thomas [21 Dec.], 22 Edward III. [A.D. 1348].

Friday before the Feast of St. Nicholas [6 Dec.], 22 Edward III. [A.D. 1348], came Nicholas Bole, skinner, and Katherine his wife, widow of Simon de Pulham, skinner, before John Lovekyn, the Mayor, Roger de Depham, the Recorder, and the rest of the Aldermen, and Thomas de Maryns, the Chamberlain, and the said Nicholas acknowledged that he had the guardianship of Johanna, daughter of the aforesaid Simon and Katherine, and of her property which he held in trust, according to the custom of the City. Sureties, viz., John Bole, skinner, and John de Bedeford, skinner.

Saturday after the Feast of St. Lucia [13 Dec.], 23 Edward III. [A.D. 1349], Walter Turk, the Mayor, gave seisin to Robert de Bramptone, chaplain, of tenements devised by John Romoneye for the maintenance of a chantry in the church of St. Botolph without Algate. (fn. 16)

Wednesday before the Feast of St. George [23 April], 23 Edward III. [A.D. 1349], the office of the bailiwick of Suthwerk demised by Thomas de Maryns, the Chamberlain, with the assent of John Lovekyn, the Mayor, and Roger de Depham, the Recorder, to Harlewyn de Honyngtone for a term of two years from Easter last, he paying to the Chamberlain of the Guildhall £10 10s. yearly to the use of the Commonalty.
