Footnotes

  • 1. The entries include clerks' wives.
  • 2. Among deaths for 1494 (338). Probably the Thomas Bodley, citizen and tailor, of St Botolph Billingsgate, whose will of 27 November 1491, proved 1 August 1493, mentions his wife Joan (PROB 11/9, f. 211v). A Joan Bodley was admitted with him in 1481 below (227).
  • 3. Among deaths for 1487 (285). A brewer, Jacob served as warden of the Trinity guild at St Botolph, Aldersgate, from 1482–4 (Basing, Parish Fraternity Register, 143) and was a leading parishioner there (B Kūmin, The Shaping of a Community (1996), pp. 235–6). He requested burial in his parish church and left 3s 4d to the parish clerks' fraternity by his will of 16 March, proved 11 May, 1487 (PROB 11/8, f. 1lv). Jacob's wife, Joan, was also admitted in 1481 below (227).
  • 4. See Thomas Bodley above (226).
  • 5. Among deaths for 1499 (379) although a marginal note 'Joan' is written against this name in the margin there. Katherine Procter was the wife of Edmund Proctor, citizen and baker, and is noted as being buried within St Margaret Moses in her husband's will of 1522 (PROB 11/20, f. 149v).
  • 6. See John Jacob above (226).
  • 7. William Turk, citizen and fishmonger, requested burial in the church of St Margaret Fish Street Hill by his will of 10 November 1471, proved 2 September 1480 (Guild- hall MS 9171/6, f. 300v). He left 10s to the parish clerks' fraternity to attend his obsequies.
  • 8. Among deaths (as Thomas Chesfelde) for 1494 (338).
  • 9. John Gigli, an Italian, was papal tax collector in England. He held the archdeaconry of London 1482–90 and subsequently the bishopric of Worcester 1497–8, when he died. See DNB.
  • 10. Probably the William Luky (or Luke), of Exeter diocese, fellow of Exeter College Oxford 1465–74 (MA by 1470), who was rector of St Ethelburga from 1480–1505, when he died (Emden, BRUO to 1500; Hennessy, p 153).
  • 11. A Master John Betts or Bett was a fellow of All Souls, Oxford 1468–78 and rector of Hackney, Middlesex 1478–1501 (Emden, BRUO to 1500). By his will of 19 August, proved 12 September, 1501 (PROB 11/13, f. 34r) he requested burial in Hackney church. No entry however, for Betts' death is recorded on BR.
  • 12. A Master Thomas Allen (Aleyn), formerly fellow of Merton College, Oxford was rector of Lambeth, Surrey, in 1473 but had vacated by 1484. He was apparently sometime rector of St Pancras Soper Lane (Emden, BRUO to 1500).
  • 13. Among deaths below (236). Lawrence Damlet was warden of the college of minor canons at St Paul's in 1468 according to the MS notes by JS Bumpus bound into Guildhall Library's copy of W Sparrow Simpson The Charter and Statutes of the College of the Minor Canons in St Paul's (1871). He was buried in the Pardon churchyard of St Paul's according to the will of his successor, Thomas Ellis (PROB 11/8, f. 204v).
  • 14. Among deaths for 1491 (314). King's Scholar at Eton c1460–64, scholar of King's College Cambridge c1464–66, succentor at Eton College 1470–2 (Emden, BRUC to 1500; Williamson, Eton Choirbook, Appendix H, Register 2). Identifiable with the vicar choral of St George's Chapel Windsor 1473–4 (St George's Chapel Archives: v.B.2, ff. 26v, 37) of this name. Thomas Ellis succeeded Lawrence Damlet (231, 236) as chaplain and minor canon of St Paul's and requested burial with him in the Pardon churchyard there by his will of 30 July, proved 18 October, 1490 (PROB 11/8, f. 204v).
  • 15. Possibly the 'Dominus Daniell' among deaths for 1491 (314). Daniel Morris left legacies to All Hallows Honey Lane and to a priest of St Augustine Watling Street and requested burial in St Paul's churchyard by his will of 3 July, proved 9 July, 1490 (Guildhall MS 9171/8, f. 7r). He also left 12d to the parish clerks' fraternity.
  • 16. Junior master in 1500 (380) and senior master in 1511 (509), Lewis Pettywade was parish clerk of St Martin Orgar. Among deaths for 1517 (576).
  • 17. Junior master in 1493 (323). Parish clerk of St Pancras 'iuxta West chepe' (Soper Lane).
  • 18. John Lutt, parish clerk of All Hallows the Great; junior master in 1498 (362) and senior master in 1510 (496). He is among deaths for 1512 (526) and is probably identifiable with the John Lutt whose will was proved on 1 July 1511 (Guildhall MS 9168/3, f. 55v), although the latter is described as of St Michael Bassishaw.
  • 19. Perhaps the Richard Dunce (Dunse) of St Peter Cornhill, an inventory of whose goods was ordered to be drawn up in 1512 after his death (Guildhall MS 9168/3, f. 71v). The death of a William Dunce (Duns) is noted under 1511 (516). However, the scribe had begun to write Richard but erased this and replaced the name by William, a William Dunce having previously been admitted in 1508 (472). The correct identification remains open.
  • 20. Among deaths for 1500 (386). A Thomas Douglas (Dagelas), citizen and waxchan- dler, of St Clement Eastcheap, left a will of 5 August, proved 6 December, 1499 (PROB 11/11, f. 279v).
  • 21. Richard Cely, fellmonger and common councilman for Tower ward c1462 who died in 1482 (Tucker). With Robert Cely he was a principal benefactor of St Olave Hart Street where his memorial was placed (Stow, Survey, ed Kingsford, I, 132).
  • 22. Among deaths (as Richard Hardkyn) for 1484 (256). Perhaps the Richard Hardkin (Hertkyn), citizen and bowyer of St Dunstan in the West, whose will of 22 December 1483 was proved 18 February 1484 (Guildhall MS 9171/6, f. 367v).
  • 23. The original number written here has been erased and the correct year added in a different hand.
  • 24. A Master John Ball, bachelor of decrees and chaplain of St John Zachary, requested burial in that church by his will of 29 April, proved 27 August, 1485 (PROB 11/7, f. 117v).
  • 25. Among deaths (as Mongubra) for 1491 (314). Probably the William Montgomery (Monggomorey), citizen and butcher, who requested burial in the church of St Nicholas Shambles by his will of 28 September, proved 18 October, 1490 (PROB 11/8, f. 204v). His wife is named there as Elizabeth and an Elizabeth Montgomery is also admitted in 1483 below (242).
  • 26. Among deaths for 1499 (377). A Thomas Barry, citizen and scrivener, requested burial by his late (unnamed) wife in the church of St Lawrence Pountney by his will (no probate) of 28 June 1498 (Guildhall MS 9171/8, f. 190r).
  • 27. See William Montgomery above (241).
  • 28. Probably the parish clerk from Southwark mentioned in a deed between 1484 and 1489 concerning property in Bermondsey Street in the parish of St Olave there (C 1/279/83). We owe this reference to Graham Dawson.
  • 29. Parish clerk of St Thomas the Apostle and senior master in 1492 (315) and again in 1502 (398).
  • 30. Joan Hayford, widow of Humphrey Hayford, alderman, who died in 1480 (181, 222).
