  • 1. Among deaths for 1501 (394). Presumably the Thomas Fitzjohn who compiled an inventory as parish clerk of St Stephen Coleman Street in 1466 (Adams, p 25). He left a will of 28 February 1498 (no probate) requesting burial within the porch on the north side of his own church (Guildhall MS 9171/8, f. 214v). His wife Elizabeth mentioned there is identifiable with the Elizabeth Fitzjohn among admissions for 1488 (291). She apparently married Thomas on the death of his previous wife Margery Fitzjohn, admitted during the year of his mastership below (206), and among deaths for 1488 (293).
  • 2. Richard Hopton, fellow of Oriel College, Oxford 1446–7; headmaster, Eton College 1447–53 and subsequently fellow 1453-c1477 and again from 1487 until his death in January 1497; rector of St Alban Wood Street 1477–87, when he resigned (Emden, BRUO to 1500).
  • 3. Perhaps the Richard Bumpstead who was a fellow of Peterhouse, Cambridge in 1422 and was still there in 1443. By 1448 he had vacated the rectory of Erpingham, Norfolk, but was still alive in 1476 when he received a bequest (Emden, BRUC to 1500).
  • 4. John Wynne (Wyne/Wyn), vicar of All Hallows Barking 1458–62, rector of St Mary Bothaw 1476–80 and canon residentiary of Chichester 1482–5 (Emden, BRUO to 1500).

His wife and exec- utrix Isobel is mentioned there and an Isobel Ewell was admitted with Robert below (208).
  • 7. Among deaths for 1484 (256). Thomas Hill, citizen and freemason, requested burial in the church of St Stephen Coleman Street where his late wife Elizabeth was buried by his will of 27 February 1483, proved 21 March 1484 (Guildhall MS 9171/6, f. 371v). He left 3s 4d to the parish clerks' fraternity 'whereof I am a brother'. Elizabeth Hill (Hylle) is recorded among deaths below (212).
  • 8. Among deaths (as Blondel) for 1484 (256). Presumably the Martin Blundell, citizen and fruiterer, who requested burial beside the stone cross at St Mary Somerset by his will of 6 March, proved 22 March, 1484 (PROB 11/7, f. 63v). His wife Joan is mentioned there, and a Joan Blundell was also admitted below (208).
  • 9. Among deaths for 1489 (302). This must be the Michael Harris, citizen and draper, who requested burial in the Lady chapel of St George Botolph Lane, where his late wife Alice was buried, by his will of 16 April, proved 6 May, 1489 (PROB 11/8, f. 185v). He was born in St Columb Major, Cornwall, and his current wife mentioned in his will was Margaret, who is also among admissions for 1479 below (208).
  • 10. Among deaths for 1498 (368). Perhaps the Robert Watson, citizen and brewer, who requested burial in the church of Holy Trinity the Less by his will of 23 January, proved 13 February, 1498 (PROB 11/11, f. 130v).

  • 12. Among deaths (as Agnes Peres) for 1520 (611). By her will of 25 September, proved 19 November, 1519, she requested burial with her late husband John Pares (Parys) in the church of St Stephen Coleman Street (Guildhall MSS 9171/9, f. 131 v, 9161/6, ff. 62r-66). John Pares (Parys) is also among admissions for 1479 (207) and deaths for 1518 (588).

  • 20. Among deaths for 1481 (230). Anne Neville, daughter of Ralph Neville, 1st Earl of Westmorland and widow of Humphrey Stafford, 1st Duke of Buckingham. Her first husband died in 1460 and in 1467 she had married Walter Blount, 1st Baron Mountjoy, who died in 1474. She died on 20 September 1480. See GEC Complete Peerage.   • 21. Margaret Beaufort (1443–1509), Countess of Richmond and mother of Henry VII, as she is described among deaths for 1510 (508). She died on 29 June 1509 and was buried in Westminster Abbey. See GEC Complete Peerage (sub Richmond) and DNB.

  • 25. John Thwaites from York diocese was a fellow of Clare Hall, Cambridge c1447–56 and senior proctor 1449–50; BTh by 1460, Lic Th 1479–80, rector of All Hallows Bread Street 1467–80 (Emden, BRUC to 1500). Also rector of St Leonard Foster Lane 1479–81 when he resigned (Hennessy, p 127).
  • 26. Among deaths for 1496 (354). Probably the Thomas Houghton who was rector of St Margaret Pattens from 1479 until after 1482 (Hennessy, pp 287, cxxv).
  • 27. Probably identifiable, as the name is so unusual, with the Thurstan Coldhale who appears soon after in 1482–3 as a lay clerk singing at St George's Chapel Windsor when he was paid £10. From the entries in the treasurer's rolls there he continued to be employed beyond Michaelmas 1499 (St George's Chapel Archives: xv.34.59, 71).   • 30. William Perry was parish clerk of All Hallows the Great and senior master in 1500 (380). He appears among deaths for 1515 (557).
  • 31. Perhaps the Alexander Worsley (Wursley) who was a clerk of St Mary at Hill in 1490–1 (Baillie, Biographical Notes).
  • 32. The parish clerk of St Dionis Backchurch who was junior master in 1499 (370) and senior master in 1504 (421) and who appears among deaths for 1518 (587). Baillie, Biographical Notes, identifies him with the organist at St Dunstan in the East noted in the churchwardens' accounts there for 1495–6.
  • 33. Among deaths for 1503 (419). John Sellers (Sellars), senior master 1487 (277) and 1496 (347); parish clerk of St Dunstan in the West.

  • 37. Among deaths for 1505 (442). Probably the Roger Grove, citizen, netmaker and joiner, who requested burial in the church of St James Garlickhythe by his will of 3 September 1496, proved 6 August 1504 (PROB 11/14, f. 126v). This mentions his successive wives Ellen and Margaret (the latter acting as his executrix), and an Ellen Grove also appears among admissions below (218).
  • 38. Also among deaths below (222). Perhaps the John Sutton, mercer and common councilman for the ward of Cheap (Tucker), who requested burial in the chapel of the Holy Trinity at St Mary le Bow if he died in London, particularly as several other mercers feature on BR during this year. His will of 9 September, was proved 27 October, 1479 (PROB 11/6, f. 286v).
  • 39. Among deaths for 1492 (322). The date of death identifies him as William Caxton the printer whose funeral expenses are recorded among the churchwardens' accounts of St Margaret Westminster for 1490–1 (Westminster City Archives E1 (microfilm), p 283). On Caxton, see DNB.
  • 40. Among deaths for 1510 (507). As the name is so unusual, he can be identified as the Thomas Yog, citizen and vintner, who requested burial in his parish church of St Botolph Billingsgate if he died in London by his will of 6 July, proved 26 August, 1509 (PROB 11/16, f. 147v).
  • 41. Among deaths for 1495 (345). Probably the citizen and weaver of this name who requested burial in the chapel of St Dionis Backchurch by his will of 22 December 1494, proved 14 May 1495 (PROB 11/10, f. 186r). This refers to his wives Eliza- beth and Margaret, the latter still alive. A Margaret Darlington was admitted with Thomas below (218).
  • 42. Among deaths for 1498 (368). Henry Faunt (Fawnte), husband of Joan Faunt, admitted with him (218). In her will of 30 March 1500, he is described as late citizen and draper who was buried in the church of St Lawrence Pountney (Guild- hall MS 9171/8, f. 200v).
  • 43. Among deaths for 1499 (377). John Marshall the Elder, citizen and mercer, who requested burial in the Lady chapel of his parish church of St Lawrence Jewry and left 20s for the maintenance of the parish clerks' fraternity by his will of 12 January, proved 9 February, 1499 (PROB 11/11, f. 224r). Twelve clerks from the fraternity were to attend his burial and sing a mass of the Holy Ghost 'by note' on the following morning for his soul.
  • 44. Apparently among deaths for 1498 (368). William Bowyer (Bowiar), citizen, who requested burial in the chapel of Our Lady and St Thomas at St Magnus Martyr by his will of 8 July, proved 30 July, 1498 (Guildhall MS 9171/8, f. 185v). He left 20s to the parish clerks' fraternity to pray for him and provided for a dirige to be performed by the priests, vicars and clerks of St Stephen's, Westminster. A William Bowes or Bowyer also appears as the choirmaster of St Mary at Hill in 1495–8 (Baillie, Biographical Notes) who might just be the same man, although he is not listed here among the parish and choir clerks.
  • 45. This seems to be the William Cornish (Cornysh), Westminster Abbey musician, who appears among deceased clerks for 1502 (408). He was instructor of the singing boys at Wesminster from 1479–80 until 1490–1 and his funeral is noted in the churchwardens' accounts of St Margaret Westminster for 1500–2. The only difficulty is that he is placed among the laity here, rather than the clerks, as is usual with these ecclesiastical musicians.
  • 46. Among deaths for 1496 (354). Probably the John Gerrard (Jerrard) the elder, citizen and woolpacker, of St Olave Hart Street, who left a will of 5 October, proved 16 October, 1495 (PROB 11/10, f. 227v) and whose wife was named Alice. An Alice Gerrard was admitted with John below (218).
  • 47. Among deaths (as John Mustell) for 1486 (275). Probably the citizen and mercer of this name who requested burial in the church of St Thomas the Apostle by his will of 24 September 1485, proved 14 February 1486 (PROB 11/7, f. 144r). If so, the Elizabeth Mustell admitted with him and among deaths for 1480 (218) is presum- ably an earlier spouse, as the mercer's wife is named as Katherine in the will. He also had a daughter named Elizabeth.
  • 48. Edmund Procter (Proctour), citizen and baker, who requested burial in the church of St Margaret Moses as close as possible to his late wife Katherine. By his will of 3 January, proved 19 January, 1522, he bequeathed 3s 4d to the parish clerks' frater- nity and an equal sum to three other fraternities (including the Pappey brotherhood) respectively so that their members would come to his burial (PROB 11/20, f. 149v). Katherine Procter is among admissions for 1481 and deaths for 1499 (227, 379).
  • 49. Apparently the wife of Roger Grove above (217) she is mentioned in his will as dead before 3 September 1496 (PROB 11/14, f. 126v).
  • 50. Wife of Thomas Darlington above (217). Although her death is not recorded on BR, she was apparently still alive in 1494 (PROB 11/10, f. 186r).
  • 51. Among deaths for 1500 (387). Admitted with her husband Henry (217), but she survived him. Joan requested burial close to him in the church of St Lawrence Pountney and left a 'towel of drapere' to the parish clerks' fraternity by her will of 30 March, proved 13 April, 1500 (Guildhall MS 9171/8, f. 200v).
  • 52. Presumably the wife of John Marshall, above, but if so she was dead before 12 January 1499 when he had another wife, Joan, mentioned in his will (PROB 11/11, f. 224r).
  • 53. The wife of John Gerrard above (217), who apparently survived him.
  • 54. Among deaths for 1483 (248). Presumably the Joan Wymark, widow, of St Botolph Aldersgate who requested burial with her late husband in the church of St Mary Islington by her will of 12 November, proved 9 December, 1482 (Guildhall MS 9171/6, f. 340r). She was apparently the Joan, wife of Thomas Wymark, who is among admissions for 1462 (73) and deaths for 1480 (222).
  • 55. Probably the Nicholas Savage who is recorded as parish clerk at St Michael Corn- hill in the churchwardens' accounts for 1457–8 (Guildhall MS 4071/1, f. 5v) and as Nicholas 'clerk' between 1455 and 1471 (ibid., ff. 3v-20r).
  • 56. She was admitted in 1471 (as Elizabeth Ryche), (139) and later married Sir William Stonor.
