Sir Ralph Freeman of Leigh, co. Surrey, knt v Thomas Turner of East Betchworth, co. Surrey, victualler

April 1638

Abstract

Freeman, the Master of Requests, complained that Turner had said on 29 March 1638 at Farningham, Kent, that he 'was a base unconscionable man and cared not what he did sweare or say for his own fame'. He had a witness to support this, but no further proceedings survive.

Matthew Ellis, aged 60

Thomas Turner of East Betchworth, co. Surrey, victualler, said on 29 March 1638 in the presence of this witness, Robert Tournay, and Edward Launder, at Farningham, co. Kent, that Sir Ralph Freeman, knight, Master of Request in ordinary to his Majestie, was a base unconscionable man and cared not what he did sweare or say for his own fame'.

Sir Ralph was the son of William Freeman of Betchworth, co. Surrey, esq, and Mary, daughter of Lewis Orrell of Wisbech in the Isle of Ely, co. Cambridge, esq. Sir Ralph married Margaret, daughter of Thomas Temple, Dr of Civil Law [See cause 638 Temple v Ayleworth].
