William Midleton of St Lawrence Jewry, London, gent v Edward Knowles of Newcastle-upon-Tyne, vintner

July 1639 - December 1640

Abstract

The cause of this dispute remains unknown, but Knowles entered bond to answer on 2 July 1639. The court moved towards sentence between October and December 1640, but the case does not appear to have been decided before the suspension of the court's proceedings.

Bound to appear 'in the court in the painted chamber within the Pallace of Westminster'.

Signed by Thomas Dent of Newcastle-upon-Tyne, gent, on behalf of Edward Knowles.

Sealed, subscribed and delivered in the presence of John Watson.

Summary of proceedings

Dr Duck acted as counsel for Middleton and Dr Hart for Knowles. The court was due to hear the sentence on 10, 24, and 30 October 1640. On 20 November Dr Hart petitioned to hear the sentence and 4 December was appointed to hear the sentence.

Notes

William Midleton was the second son of Richard Midleton of Denbigh. His younger brothers Sir Thomas and Sir Hugh had served as Lord Mayor and acquired a baronetcy respectively.
