This title does not appear in SC8/191/9518.] THE PETITION MADE TO THE LORD KING BY THE BISHOP OF ELY, THAT IS SIR JOHN HOTHAM, FOR CONFIRMATION OF THE CHARTERS OF ELY, IN HIS PARLIAMENT AT YORK, IN THE TWELFTH YEAR OF HIS REIGN [1318]. A nostre seygnur le roi prie l'evesqe de Ely qe si ly pleise [editorial note: 'qe li pleise' in SC8/191/9518.] qe les chartres des fraunchises grauntes par ses auncestres as predecessours le dit evesqe soient rehercez, grauntez e confermez ove la clause qe s'il y eit point desusez de ceste hure enavant peuse estre usez; To our lord the king the bishop of Ely prays that, if it please him, the charters of franchises granted by his ancestors to the predecessors of the said bishop might be read out, granted and confirmed, with the clause that if there is a point which has not been used, it can henceforth be used;
et qe les fraunchises qe ly ou ses predecessurs ount eu e usez cea en ariere e clamez en Eire e alowe pussent estre par chartre affermez e confermez en la fourme avantdite; and that the franchises which he or his predecessors have hitherto had and used, and claimed in Eyre, and which have been allowed, can be approved and confirmed by charter in the aforesaid form;

Likewise, whereas the said bishop and his predecessors have always had in their half hundred of Mitford in the county of Norfolk return of writs and all the aforesaid franchises, may it please our lord the king to grant that the said bishop and his successors may have a coroner in the said half hundred, chosen through the king's writ, as is fitting.

The justices, the king's serjeants and two of the wisest and best informed clerks of chancery are to be appointed to examine the charters of which the petition makes mention, and they are to inform themselves on the articles contained in them, and which points have been made use of and which not, and they are to inform themselves on whether the confirmation of the said charters is to be granted or not, and which of the points which have not been used can properly be granted to be used in future without prejudice to the crown or anyone else, and they are to report their advice on this to the king. And with regard to the second and the third petitons, they are to inform themselves and report their advice in the same manner. With regard to the coroner, this is to be enquired into in due manner etc., and returned in chancery, and if it is found that this is not to the harm of the king or of anyone else, it is to be granted and done of the king's grace.

Afterwards the king, on the advice of the aforesaid justices, serjeants and clerks, who have diligently examined and inspected the heads of the said charters, and the articles concerning these petitions as well, in all points as they were ordered, and with the assent and advice of the magnates and others of his council he agrees and grants of his grace that the bishop is to have confirmation of the charters with the clause that if any of the points contained in them has not been used, notwithstanding this he may henceforth use them etc. With regard to his franchises claimed and allowed in Eyre, the king has agreed that what has been allowed in record is to be put in his charter. With regard to the chattels of fugitives and felons, with the same assent and advice it is agreed and pleases him that the bishop and his successors are to have them seized, and to have and hold them, in accordance with the terms of his petition. And with regard to having the coroner etc. it pleases the king that this be enquired into and done in the manner described above, and if it is found that it is not to the harm etc. he is to have it as requested.
