Clerks of the Cheque to the Messengers 16601837
The clerks of the cheque to the messengers were appointed by the lord chamberlain. Originally, there were two such clerks of the cheque. One was eliminated on 14 Nov. 1782. (fn. 1) Circa 1695 they were paid 49 17s 6d per annum apiece plus fees for chequeing'. After a scandal involving messengers' bills was uncovered in 1699, this was raised to 99 15s under Queen Anne.
