LIST 3 SUBDEANS

The subdeans were vicars, not canons, but they are listed here for the sake of completeness and in conformity with the arrangement of 2 Fasti VII.

SUBDEANERY

Subdeanery consisted in the vicarage of the altar of St Peter the Great in the cathedral (cf. Acts of the Dean and Chapter... of Chichester 1472-1544 (White Act Book), ed. W. D. Peckham (Suss. Rec. Soc. lii [1952]) no. 13, of 1477).

The vicar of St Peter appears in two chs. of the later 13th century, not called subdean: 1272 × 79 and 1272 × 94 (Chart. Chichester nos. 450, 257); cf. ibid. no. 361.

In 1291 the church of St Peter the Great appears among the city churches, valued at £5 'non excedit'. Subdean collected Peter's pence from city churches (Chart. Chichester no. 957).

For the subdeanery estates in 1535 see Valuation 1535 p. 174.
