Grant to Thomas de Boulton of the manor of Hilderskelf and other lands in Galinthorpe, to hold so long as they shall remain in the king’s hand. This grant is made under the following circumstances:—By inquisition post mortem, held at the suit of the said Thomas, before Thomas de Burgh, then escheator of Edward II. beyond Trent, as to the possessions of Ralph, baron of Graystok, tenant in chief, whose lands had after his death been taken into the king’s hands, it appeared that the said Ralph held in fee the said manor of Hilderskelf of John le Bygot, and certain other lands in Galinthorpe of Richard de Nevill, all which possessions were charged in favour of the said Thomas with the payment to him yearly during life of 20 marks, two robes, one with fur and one with linen, and a saddle proper for a knight; and by another inquisition it appeared that the said Thomas was seised of the above charge by virtue of a certain deed made between him and the said baron of Graystok. By divers writs the late king directed Simon de Grymesby, escheator in York, etc., to pay arrears of his annuity to the said Thomas out of the issues of the said lands, who returned that the issues of the manors were insufficient for the purpose, in that the lands extended to 12l. 7s. 11d. only; and the said Thomas has petitioned that the lands be assigned to him in consequence, towards the said charge. At the signification of Charles, king of France, the king was informed that John Sereiz of St. Jean d’Angeli, master and owner, and Martin Baston of St. Sebastian, pilot, of a ship called Nostre Dame de Seint Johan, long before the late war in Gascony, loaded the same at Thonay Charente, for le Dam in Flanders, with wines, etc., and that at Cradon, near the port of St. Mathieu in Brittany, Bardok de la Segne, Perrot de Peyana, Peter de Menta son of Amald de Gerandas of Bayonne, in a galliot called the Spynas, and Peter Trunquan, master of the St.James of Bayonne, and their accomplices, boarded the said ship, killed the men thereon, and brought it to England; whereof restitution, with its boat and gear, is demanded for John Sereiz: and by the report of Robert de Keleseye, Thomas de Faveresham and John de Shelvynge, assigned to make inquisition thereof, it appeared that on 10 May, 17 Edward II., the said ship, now called la Despensere, was brought to the coast of Cornwall by the persons above named, and the cargo of 240 tuns of white wine, worth 4l. the tun, sold at Fowey; and that they afterwards took the ship to Bordeaux, where it was adjudged to Master Peter Galicien for satisfaction of his damages for a trespass committed against him by the said Bardok and his accomplices, and was then given by Peter Galicien with its boat and gear—viz., six cables, six anchors, etc.—to the king’s father; and that the said ship was at the time of the seizure of the value of 160l., but afterwards depreciated (pejorata) to the extent of 160l.; and that the same is now in the custody of Richard Fille by assignment from the late king. Whereas William, count of Hainault, Holland and Zealand, and lord of Friesland, for certain goods and merchandise of English merchants some time ago taken and carried away by certain of his subjects in Zealand, and for 87l. which Robert Elys of Great Yarmouth, now deceased, lent to his agents in the parliament at Staunford, 3 Edward II., lately bound himself by letters patent to the same Robert for the payment of 1,300l. sterling; and afterwards, because of non-payment thereof, ordained, with the common assent of his subjects, that the said sum should be levied from merchants, fishers and mariners of his kingdom, in the towns and ports of England, wherever they should be found, by a toll of 10s. sterling from every ship carrying herrings or fish, on its first arrival in England, once a year, from every other ship carrying other kinds of merchandise 10s. on each arrival, and 20d. for every pound’s worth of fresh and salt herrings and other merchandise—By which means 567l. 19s. 11½d. were realised and paid, leaving 732l. 0s. 0½d. still due, that is to say to Walter le Keu and his associates 395l. 16s. 2½d., to the aforesaid Robert 245l. 14s. 1d., and to Roger de Boselyngthorp 90l. 9s. 9d.: And Edward II., as well on the suit of the said Robert in his lifetime as of William and John Elys, his executors, after his death, and of the said Walter and Roger, by divers letters patent, for periods now expired, appointed the said Robert, while he lived, and afterwards his executors, and the said Roger, to collect and levy the same tolls, by the view and testimony of the bailiffs, by themselves and their agents, in the towns and ports of Lenn, Brunham, Thornham, Blakeneye, Coumere and Great Yarmouth, co. Norfolk, and of Kirkele, Dunwich, Oreford, Goseford, Erewell and Ipswich, co. Suffolk, and ordered that they should execute indentures or tallies of the sums so raised, the same to be under their seals and those of the bailiffs of the said towns and ports, and that of the said sums the said Robert or his executors should take two thirds, and that of the said Roger one third until their debts should be satisfied, and by other letters patent the said Walter was permitted to collect his debts in the other ports within the kingdom, those in Norfolk and Suffolk alone excepted: By means whereof the aforesaid Robert, and his executors, and Roger, levied 112l. 15s. 11d., whereof Robert and his executors received 75l. 3s. 11½d., and Roger 37l. 11s. 11½d.
