Grant to Robert de Lascy, on his petition to parliament at Northampton, that, notwithstanding letters patent granting to Gaucelinus, cardinal of SS. Marcellinus and Peter, power to obtain in the ecclesiastical courts payment of debts due from his benefices in England [see p. 64 and p. 103], yet, that grant appearing to parliament to be contrary to the common law, he may, when sued in court Christian by the said cardinal, have prohibitions and attachments in the king’s Chancery at the common law. Inspeximus and confirmation of letters patent of Thomas, formerly bishop of St. Davids, dated Westminster, the feast of the Ascension, A.D. 1290, sealed also by Edward I., granting to William de Haunlee, prior of the Hospital of St. John of Jerusalem in England, and his successors, the appropriation of the prebendal church of Lannarcheney, with the church of Landestephan, which now is of the patronage of the Hospital, the appropriation having been made by the bishop’s predecessors, and ordaining the assignment of some portion of those churches for the relief of the infirm and poor, without defrauding either church of offices due; and that for the cure of souls there shall be a perpetual vicar, who is to receive 12l. a year from the revenue of the church, according to the ordinance of the bishop and prior. This appropriation was granted on account of the great losses of men and means sustained by the Hospital, and to strengthen the number of its fighting men, of whom it lost many in Acre (Akoneya). By fine of 20s.
