Roteland, and the brother had of the king's grant, and of the reversion of 35s. 2¾d. of rent in the same town expectant on the demise of Walter de Exton; and of the release by Nicholas de Wight to the said William and his heirs of any right he had in the said lands and rents. Licence, at the request of queen Isabella, for the alienation in mortmain by John Giffard, king's clerk, to a provost to be appointed in the church of St. Andrew, Cotherstoke, and twelve brethren chaplains, secular or religious, of the manor of Cotherstoke, two mills with the mill ponds there, 1 acre of meadow in Piryho and a fishery in the river Nene, a messuage and 85 acres 3 roods, 9½ perches of land, by the forest perch, lately assarted in the forest of Rokyngham, with common of pasture in the forest, and the advowsons of the church of Cotherstoke and the hospital of Piryho, co. Northampton, said to be held in chief, for the sustenance of them and two clerks to celebrate divine service daily in the said church for the good estate of the king, queen Isabella, queen Philippa, the king's children and the said John, for their souls when dead, and for the souls of Edward II., the king's progenitors and heirs, the ancestors, relations and benefactors of the said John and the faithful departed, as he should appoint; and for the provost and brethren to enclose and build on the assart land as John by letters patent of Edward II. had licence to do, and to appropriate the church. Mandate to Reginald de Conductu, John de Grantham, John de Oxonia and Richard de Hakeneye, who were lately appointed to buy for the king 4,000 sacks of wool in the city and suburbs of London, and in the counties of Surrey, Sussex, Kent and Middlesex, and afterwards, on account of some news sounded in the king's ears, rendering it necessary that he should have further wool, were appointed to make search for and buy all wools in the city and suburbs of London in the hands or custody of Englishmen, to be very diligent in the premises, and if, as is reported, some men not regarding the safety of the realm are scheming to remove and conceal their wools, to seize as forfeited to the king all wools so removed or concealed which they shall find in the said city and counties. They are to certify the king from time to time of the names of those who have removed or concealed wools, and he will cause these to be punished as they deserve. By K. & C.

Acceptance of a grant by John de Warenna, earl of Surrey and Sussex, to John de Wyngefeld, of a messuage, 188 acres of land, 21½ acres of meadow and 11 acres of several pasture out of the demesne lands in Balne, which the earl holds for life with reversion to the king, to hold for the life of the grantor by the rent of a rose; and grant as a further grace that after the death of the earl he shall hold the messuage and lands to him and his heirs by the said service. Grant to Michael Haugard, who is by birth of the power of the king of France, but has for thirty years made stay within the realm having a fixed domicile and lands in fee at Sudbury, co. Suffolk, paying lot and scot and other charges with the men of the town, that he shall not be in any way interfered with because of his origin by occasion of any disturbance between the king and the king of France now arisen or hereafter to arise; on condition that he do not pass without the realm or remove his goods without the king's licence, nor send to any part letters or news to the king's prejudice. In consideration of the goodness, knowledge and fidelity which from his early years the king has found in many ways in Richard de Feriby, king's clerk, late keeper of his wardrobe, and of his good service both to him and Edward II., as well as for the special affection which he bears for him, he has retained the said Richard for life as one of his house and family, granting that every time he come to him he shall be honourably admitted in the household in board and allowances, as well within as without, for him and his household, and that he shall have for life wages and robes befitting his estate by the hands of the clerk of the Great Wardrobe. Grant to David de Barry, in enlargement of the late grant to him by letters patent of the custody, during minority of the heir, of the lands in Ireland late of Peter de Cogan, tenant in chief, subject to his rendering at the Exchequer of Dublin the true value of the lands, that he shall hold the custody without rendering anything, and from heir to heir until one attain his full age. This grant is made in consideration of his labours and charges in defending the lands against attacks by the Irish, and in maintaining the king's rights in those parts. By p.s.

Mandate to John de Molyns, steward of the king's chamber, and of the lands reserved to the said chamber, or to such as supplies his place at the manor of Brustwyk, reciting that, at the supplication of some of the bondmen of the manor setting forth that in time past the following custom has been used in the manor, to wit that if any bondman die leaving his wife with child or children under age, and a stranger of any condition or tenure come and make fine with the bailiffs of the manor to have his lands, without reclamation by his offspring or friends, and such fine be verified by the tenants of the manor, his issue shall be wholly excluded in the future from holding the lands of their father, and that the steward and bailiffs of the manor receive fines as well from freemen as from bondmen of other lords to have the lands of the bondmen of the manor when they die, whereby the bondmen are much oppressed and oftentimes of necessity remove to places without it, the king considering the said custom to be unjust as on the death of bondmen their issue or next kinsman ought by the custom usual in other parts of the realm to be admitted to their lands in preference to strangers, orders that where bondman die leaving issue or others near of kin who are willing to make fine for his lands, the steward shall not receive fines from any stranger, whether freeman or bondman, for their lands; and commanding them to observe this order in future, and to hear the plaints of any of the bondmen of the manor who on the death of father or other ancestor have been thus put out of their lands by strangers and to do full justice to them notwithstanding the custom. Confirmation of a grant by queen Isabella to Walter de Chesthunt, her yeoman, of the manor of Snetesham, co. Norfolk, with the wreck of sea of the manor, to hold to him and his heirs for her life by the yearly service of a rose at Midsummer, and by rendering yearly to Isabella de Bilneye 6l.; and grant in consideration of his manifold services to the king and the said queen that he shall retain the manor, which on the death of queen Isabella would revert to the king, with the said wreck and all other appurtenances, to him and his heirs by yearly service of a rose to the king and his heirs, and that after the death of Isabella de Bilneye the manor shall be discharged of the said rent of 6l. Whereas the king by letters patent lately granted to Maurice de Berkele the manors of Mawardyn and Wynfreton, co. Hereford, and of Fulbrok and Westhall, co. Oxford, and lands in Upton, Teynton and Swynbrok, which had escheated by the forfeiture of Hugh le Despenser the elder, and were then in the king's hands by the death of John de Wisham to whom he had granted them for life, to hold for his life by the rent of 20l., and whereas the said Maurice afterwards surrendered these to the king and his heirs; the king has granted the said manors and lands to them and Margery, his wife, to hold to them and his heirs with the knights' fees, advowsons of churches and other appurtenances, by the services due to the king and other chief lords of the fee, without rendering anything for them. Inspeximus of the charter, dated 22 September, 8 Edward III., whereby the king granted in fee to Richard earl of Arundel, the castle, manor and land of Chyrk, escheats by the forfeiture of Roger de Mortuo Mari of Wygemore, late earl of March, with knights' fees, advowsons, royalties, royal liberties, free customs, hundreds, fairs, markets, forests, chaces, parks, woods, warrens and other appurtenances, notwithstanding a previous grant, that the men and tenants should remain annexed to the crown for ever; and confirmation of the same to secure him from impeachment of his title in future times, notwithstanding such grant to the men and tenants of the castle, manor and land that they should be retained as annexed to the crown and not be put out of the king's hands, or any other grant to the contrary, which grant and charter so made to the men and tenants as being in derogation of the king's royal power are by these presents revoked with the assent of the council. Grant also that if the premises shall at any time be recovered against the earl or his heirs by judgement of the king's court, compensation shall be made. By K. & C.

Whereas Alice daughter of Amabel Foillet of Ekeresbury granted in fee to Roger de Melebourne the reversion of a messuage and 8 acres of land in Ekesbury, co. Southampton, said to be held of the present king in chief, expectant on the demise of Richard Worme of Ekeresbury, and the said Richard, by virtue of such grant, attorned to him for his services; and whereas the said Roger acquired in fee from the said Amabel 16½ acres of land and 1 acre of meadow in the said town, held in chief of Edward II., and common for all beast on the fee of her and her heirs, as her free tenants in the said town had, and common of marl and heath on her soil as required, and acquired also for life from Thomas Foillet 9 acres of land, 40s. of rent and half a toft in the said town, held in chief of the present king; and whereas the licence of the late king and of the king was not obtained for these grants; the king, for a fine made by the said Roger, has pardoned the trespasses herein and granted the necessary licence. By letters patent of 28 May in the tenth year of his reign, Edward II. granted to Richard Lovel and Muriel, his wife, the manors of Brehull and Silveston to hold until he should grant to them and the heirs of Muriel lands of equal value, in exchange for the manor of Old Rokesburgh of her inheritance, which with their consent he retained for the munition of the castle of Rokesburgh. And afterwards the said Richard and James Lovel, son of him and Muriel and heir of the latter, in the time of the present king entered upon the said manor of Old Rokesburgh and received the issues and profits of all three manors. Wherefore the king summoned the said Richard to speak with him of this contempt, and he, in consideration of the king's right herein, surrendered into his hands the manors of Brehull and Silveston, and afterwards for greater declaration of that right quitclaimed all right in them to John de Molyns, to whom the king had granted them by charter, making instant supplication for an indemnity herein.
