To the sheriff of Wiltesir. Order, before proceeding to take an inquisition concerning the cattle and chattels taken by Peter Walbere, to summon before him the escheator and others of whom he may get full information, to hear arguments on either side, and to proceed with such circumspection that for lack of information or by too speedy taking of that inquisition the king be not barred from the cattle etc. aforesaid; as many times the king has ordered the sheriff to replevy to Amice who was wife of Robert Bardolf knight, Edmund Daunteseye, William Gore, Roger Lynde and William Lynde their cattle etc. taken and unlawfully detained by Peter Walbere as they say, or to signify wherefore he would not or might not execute that command, and he returned that he might not replevy the same for that the said Peter claims to be owner thereof; and willing that the said Amice and the others should not be defrauded by a false claim, by another writ the king ordered him to take with him the keepers of the pleas of the crown and, in presence of the said Peter, to make inquisition whether the same be of Amice and the others or of the said Peter, and to replevy them to Amice and the others if assured that they be theirs; and now the king is informed that the same were taken into his hand by John Shypton late escheator by reason of an outlawry published against John Dauntesey.
